Jaffna Mayor Yogeswari Pathgunarajah prevented attempts by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to commemorate the death of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader Velupillai Prabhakaran at Mullivaikal in Mullaitivu District, Northern Province, reports Daily News on June 2. The Mayor said, "Tamil leaders like Alfred Doraiappa and A. Amirthalingam served the people of the area and they were murdered by the LTTE and TNA should commemorate the deaths of such leaders instead of commemorating the terrorist leader”. According to information, under the pretext of commemorating the dead, plans were being made to rouse the people of Jaffna and create disturbances in Jaffna where peace prevails now.

The United National Party (UNP) on June 3 rejected Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s call for a referendum among Tamils in Sri Lanka including those currently living abroad to decide on the establishment of a separate state (Eelam), reports The Island. UNP Member of Parliament (MP) Eran Wickremeratne said that the UNP was committed to preserving the unitary status and territorial integrity of the country and there could be no compromise on that score. He also criticized the Sri Lankan Government by saying that "It was this tragic state of affairs that has led to foreign countries and international organisations telling us to put our house in order. It has reached a stage where the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) is about to commence a war crimes probe into the conduct of the Rajapaksa Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)."

Former Norwegian Minister and Peace Envoy Erik Solheim, once a key negotiator in Sri Lanka's Oslo-mediated peace process, said he is willing to be a witness at any recognized international tribunal on alleged war crimes committed by Sri Lanka during the war, reports Colombo page on June 8. Solheim, noting that peace in Sri Lanka was won by the war at a tremendous cost, said he still believes peace could have been achieved without the bloodshed. He said that "during the last four months of the war, we called upon Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader Velupillai Prabhakaran to accept an 'organized' end to the war, which would have saved the lives of tens of thousands of civilians and thousands of LTTE cadres. Kumaran Pathmanathan (KP) can bear witness to this. It is so sad he did not accept the facts." He explained that Prabhakaran's refusal to accept federalism and the constant infighting, between the two main political parties, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP) were the two main obstacles to the Norway-brokered peace process.

Colombo Page on June 11 also reports that a legislator of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP), Wijedasa Rajapakshe said that a vote on a debate on the matter may show to the international community that there is at least a minority of MPs supporting such an international investigation since the major Tamil party, TNA may vote in favor of the international probe. Defence Ministry Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya on June 11 said that those making false accusations from European and North American countries that deported Tamil asylum seekers are subjected to rape and sexual abuse at the hands of Security Forces (SFs) wanted to avoid being deported to Sri Lanka, reports Daily news. He said that illegal migrants seeking asylum or refugee status have become a problem for the countries in these regions and their pleas are getting rejected as authorities in such countries have a clear understanding of what is happening in the country. He stressed that these allegations are part of a massive campaign launched by the asylum seekers along with over 7 per cent of the Tamil Diaspora members who are desperately trying to carve out a separate state in the country.

Sri Lanka banned visas on arrival for Pakistanis after investigations showed that jihadist groups targeting India were using Sri Lanka as a transit point, reports The Times of India on June 29. Sri Lanka is also one of the few countries that extended such a facility to Pakistani nationals. A bomb blast in a Chennai train in May revealed new plots against India by Pakistan-based jihadist groups using Sri Lanka and Maldives as transit points. A multinational investigation including Malaysia zeroed in on a Lankan national, Shakir Hussain, who confessed that he had visited India over 20 times on reconnaissance trips. The investigation, sources said, also pointed to involvement by Pakistani officials at their mission in Colombo. Indian officials confirmed that Sri Lanka and Maldives have been red-flagged by Indian security establishment for some time. Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, in his first conversations with Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, had raised this issue which he said was of particular sensitivity to India. On his return, Rajapaksa is believed to have launched an investigation. The results of the probe have contributed to the decision.
