According to official sources, left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) blew up the house of State’s Cooperation Minister and a police outpost in Malkangiri district, on December 1 night. Official sources said, approximately 40 Naxalites raided the police post at Poteru market and triggered off a dynamite blast. No one was injured as the police personnel were made to vacate the premise at gunpoint. Naxalites then went to Minister’s house and forced the occupants to come out. A dynamite blast was set off there as well. The Minister was not at home at the time. The Minister, speaking to the media, said that he had been in the Naxalites ‘hit list’ for quite some time. He added that now he feared a ‘greater danger’ to his life.

Left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) unleashed a fresh wave of violence on the night of December 1, in the State. The attacks were reportedly to mark the first anniversary of the formation of People’s Guerrilla Army (PGA). In the first incident, approximately 50 Naxalites attacked the police station at Koyyuru in Visakhapatnam district. They also blasted claymore mines during the attack. The police repulsed the attack by using grenades and other sophisticated weapons. In another incident, in the same district, approximately 40 Naxalites launched an attack at the GK Veedhi police station. Security forces promptly returned the fire and the Naxalites were forced to retreat. While retreating, Naxalites blasted a telephone exchange and Coffee Research building at RV Nagar.

The government has sounded an alert across the State and further fortifications of police stations in the Naxalite-affected areas has been ordered. speaking in Hyderabad on December 1, Chief Minster N Chandrababu Naidu, said that his government would give top priority to training and other facilities for the police so that they become more efficient to tackle Naxals. He added that the government would extend all help to the police force for acquiring sophisticated communication equipment and weapons to wipe out Naxalites from the State.

The operation was conducted in the forests of Belpahri, Baspahari, Goaltore, Salboni and Bhulabheda. Invoking the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO), the Union government, on December 5, banned left-wing extremists, Naxalites outfits, the People’s War Group (PWG) and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC). These outfits along with all their formations and front organisations, have been declared ‘terrorist organisations, under the provision of Clause (A) of Sub-section 2 of section 18 of POTO with immediate effect. This decision takes the number of outfits banned under the POTO to 25. According to official sources, the action against the PWG comes in the wake of its recent high-impact attacks, mostly in Andhra Pradesh and sporadic violence in Orissa, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh while, inputs from Bihar suggested that the MCC was reportedly planning to step up violence there. The Andhra Pradesh government, which has already banned the PWG, has been pressing the Union government for quite some time for a nationwide ban on the outfit.

They executed three persons after four hours of ‘public trial’ on charges of misusing the outfit for monetary gains. Media reports said that approximately 5,000 persons, including some government officials and media persons were present on the occasion. Earlier, the MCC reportedly issued appeals through the public address system and put up posters in 20 adjoining villages, asking the people to assemble at the Bhagwanpur market place for the ‘trial’. They also reportedly directed government officials to be present and ordered schools to be closed. After the ‘trial’, the MCC ‘commander’ said that more such ‘open courts’ would be held and warned that those working against the Naxalites would meet the similar fate. The issue was also raised in the State Legislative Assembly where leader of the opposition alleged that the Naxalites were having a free run and the government law and order machinery had collapsed. The State Home Minister Nand Kumar Patel said the three victims were also Naxalites and were involved in several crimes, including two robbery cases on December 7.

The decision to convene the meeting was taken in the wake of the recent ban on two Naxalite outfit the Peoples’ War Group (PWG) and the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) under the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO). This will be the seventh meeting of the Coordination Centre, headed by Union Home Secretary Kamal Pande and comprising the chiefs of police of Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Official sources said, besides taking stock of the situation in the wake of recent upsurge of Naxall violence in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa, the meeting would go into the action taken by the affected States against the PWG and MCC. An overall review of security along the Indo-Nepal border will also be done during the meeting.
