According to Telegraph, the Jharkhand Police launched an operation against Maoist insurgents on October 5. Director General of Police (DGP) J.B. Mahapatra, said: “The operation would be carried out in 18 of the 22 districts, where rebel activities are high. A list of most wanted criminals would be prepared to help us in this operation.” Sources said other decisions taken during the meeting included construction of roads in the Maoist-dominated areas and to connect those to the main roads.

On October 5, security forces recovered five landmines planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres during combing operation from different areas in the Chatra district. The landmines, each weighing 15 kg, were planted at different places between Lavalong and Kunda, Superintendent of Police Subodh Kumar informed. The Maoists must have planted the mines with an aim to target police vehicles, Kumar added.

According to The Hindu, a top functionary of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), Samala Venkatesu alias Sudarshan or Satyam, was killed in an encounter with the police in the forest area of Nallamada in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh on October 6. Sudarshan was the secretary of Nallamala Forest Division Committee and member of four-man state committee of the CPI-Maoist. Another State Committee member, Obulesu alias Zaheer, was injured in the incident. Sudershan and Obulesu along with some important Maoist leaders were reportedly holding a secret meeting near Payakatta tank in the Nallamada forest when a police party surrounded them. Other Maoists, who were believed to be around 20 in number, managed to escape. Two of the fleeing Maoists reportedly suffered injuries. The police recovered two hand grenades, a rifle, one pistol, two wireless sets and a large quantity of revolutionary literature from the incident site, according to Anantapur Superintendent of Police Stephen Ravindra. Sudarshan was wanted in 101 cases, including 30 murders.

According to delayed news, on October 7, Sobha, an ‘area commander’ of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was arrested along with two accomplices from the Lathikata market area in the Sundergarh district. According to Asian Age, she is a member of the outfit’s central committee. Sundergarh district Superintendent of Police, Dhirendra S Kutte, said that Sobha, along with Prasant Bose, a West Bengal based Maoist leader, was instrumental in planning attacks in States like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Orissa. The two other arrested Maoists were identified as Rajan Munda and Bijoy Munda, who reportedly are members of the no. 39 platoon of the Maoists.

According to The Hindu, a top functionary of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), K Ramulu alias RK, was killed in an encounter near Gorlagondi village in the Visakhapatnam district on October 7. Police sources said that the killed extremist was a member of East Division Gurtedu Area Committee and a native of Karimnagar district. He had been working in the outfit for the last 22 years and carried a reward of INR 3 lakh on his head. After the encounter, a Maoist identified as Sindri Giri, who was accompanying Ramulu, surrendered to the police.

According to Hindustan Times, on October 8, during a joint combing operation of police and Central Reserve Police force (CRPF) personnel in Orissa's Gajapati district, 12 cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a few involved in the March 24, 2006, R Udaygiri jailbreak incident, were arrested. A huge quantity of explosives and ammunition, including live cartridges and hand grenades, were recovered from them. DIG (South Western range), Jaswinder Singh, who was in charge of anti-Maoist operations in the region, was killed near Guma village while he, accompanied by two personal security officers (PSOs) was on his way from Sunabeda in Koraput district to Padmapur in Rayagada. Singh's vehicle was stopped by a group who asked for contribution for a religious festival. He got down from the vehicle to clear the way, but refused to pay any money. The assailants reportedly shot him as he was returning to his car. However, the Director General of Police Amarananda Pattanayak speaking to Press Trust of India on October 24 (today) ruled out the involvement of the Maoists and said that the police officer was a victim of accidental firing. "We had our doubts about the sequence of events. Both the PSOs were interrogated and it was found that one of the guns held by a PSO had gone off accidentally," he said.
