Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel neutralised a hideout belonging to the Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and recovered a cache of bomb-making material in Savar on January 18, reports Daily Star. However, four JMB militants present in the hideout, located in the third floor of a four-storied building at Mazidpur near Savar market bus stand, managed to escape. The cache included ten improvised iron castings for grenades, 11 pieces of power-gel for grenade, sodium sulphide, potassium sulphide, potassium carbonate, chloroform, measuring scale, glass jar, funnel, dust mask, hand gloves and Bunsen burners. The raid was reportedly conducted following information provided by the JMB ‘commander’ Ayubur Rahman, who was arrested on January 17 at Arai Hazar in Narayanganj.

Police on March 10 arrested a suspected militant of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), Rezwanul Haque alias Rezu, in Debadangi Union of Thakurgaon Sadar sub-district. Security forces recovered a large cache of bomb-making materials and arrested six suspected militants after a raid on an Islamic school on March 24, Associated Press reported. A team belonging to the elite anti-crime force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) carried out the raid at a Madrassa (seminary) in the Jamalpur district, about 145 kilometers (90 miles) north of the capital Dhaka, RAB spokesperson Gulzaruddin Ahmed informed reporters. The seizure included 27 packets of gel explosives, 75 grenade casings, 80 grenade covers and a large number of detonators. RAB personnel also seized 117 books and four discs on Jihad, Ahmed added. He said the men belonged to the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) group, and they were being interrogated in Dhaka.

According to Daily Star, security agencies on April 14 and April 13-night arrested 28 Islamist militants at Bogra, Tangail, Pabna, Meherpur and Jamalpur. Bogra police arrested eight people, including Abdul Mannan, brother-in-law of the executed Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leader Abdul Awal, from different places in Bogra Sadar and in Gabtoli on April 14 for their alleged involvement in militancy. Tangail police arrested eight members of an unidentified Islamist militant outfit on April 14-night during a raid at Purba Adalat Para in the Tangail town. Those arrested allegedly told police during interrogation that they were organising a Jihad and other members of the group remain active in different places in the country but their militant wing is yet to be formed and named. Further, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel arrested four suspected JMB cadres after raiding two villages in Pabna. The RAB also arrested six militants of the Hizbut Touhid from Meherpur.

The joint forces arrested Arafat Rahman, younger son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, during a raid at her residence in the capital Dhaka on April 15-night, according to Daily Star. However, it was still not known on what charges Arafat Rahman was detained and where he was taken. A couple of hours before Arafat was arrested, top officials of the joint forces reportedly had gone to Khaleda's residence and advised her to leave the country. She is learnt to have told the joint forces that she is ready to face any consequence but will not leave the country. Her elder son Tarique Rahman, who was arrested on March 8 by the army-led security forces, was sent to jail on March 12.

Daily Star reports that a regional leader of the Janajuddha faction of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) was killed in an encounter with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel in the Ataikula sub-district of Pabna district on May 7. The slain extremist Abdur Rob was holding a meeting along with his accomplices at a school in Goaishbari village when RAB personnel raided the school premises. Official sources said he was wanted in more than 12 cases, including eight for murder. A gun and eight bullets were recovered from the encounter site.

Two regional leaders of the Lal Pataka faction of the Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) were killed in an encounter with a joint team of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel at Harinarayanpur village in the Pabna Sadar sub-district on May 22, reports Daily Star. The extremists, identified as Bishu Pramanik of village Ranigram in Ataikula sub-district and Jamal Uddin of village Jalalpur in Pabna Sadar sub-district, were holding a secret meeting when the raid occurred. RAB sources said Bishu was wanted in ten cases, including five for murder, while Jamal was involved in seven cases, including three for murder. Five militants of the Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including two top leaders, were arrested in a series of raids by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Dhaka and Mymensingh on July 9 and 10, reports Daily Star. The leaders were identified as Asadul Islam alias Arif, a member of JMB's reconstituted Majlish-e-Shura (the highest decision-making body), and Anwar Hossain alias Faruq, a Shura (governing body) member. The others were the outfit’s regional commander for Mymensingh, Shafiqul Islam alias Rakib, Sagar Hossain alias Sayem and Saiful Islam. Arif was convicted in absentia for the killing of two judges at Jhalakathi on November 14, 2005. Six others convicted in the same case, including the outfit’s chief Abdur Rahman and his deputy Bangla Bhai, were executed in different jails on March 29, 2007. Two 9mm pistols with nine bullets, seven computers, a large number of compact disks and books on jihad were recovered from the arrested militants. Hasan Mahmud Khandakar, Director-General of the RAB, told New Age, "We succeeded in breaking the backbone of the banned outfit, but we decided to intensify our drives to nab the outfit’s members who are scattered throughout the country".

Daily Star reported that the security forces have launched a search operation for the former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Moulana Saidur Rahman, who has reportedly taken over as chief of the JMB. Rahman is absconding since the arrest of JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman in Sylhet city in 2006. Rapid Action Battalion sources claimed that Saidur Rahman is conducting activities of the JMB since the arrest and execution of the militant’s top leadership.
