One suspected Underground (UG) cadre was killed in a reported encounter with a combined team of Security Forces (SFs) at Narankonjil in Imphal District on January 14, reported The Sangai Express. A Police source informed that gun fight broke out between suspected UG cadres and a combined team of Imphal East and Imphal West commandos and troops of 18th Sikh Regiment on the bank of Chandranadi canal at Narankonjil. One UG suspect was killed in the encounter while the others managed to flee taking advantage of darkness. One 9 mm pistol, one hand grenade and Kinetic Honda scooter were recovered from the encounter site.

Kanglaonline reports that two Security Force (SF) personnel were killed and two others got injured when suspected militants ambushed a patrol of the Assam Rifles near Jhoukhonom village in Churachandpur District on the Myanmar border on January 16. According to the Police the militants snatched away one weapon from the SFs after the attack. The incident happened when troops of 39th Assam Rifles on patrol came under attack from heavily armed militants near border pillar No. 46 close to Jhoukhom village under Singhat Police station. There was a gun battle thereafter which lasted for half-an-hour. Details are still awaited. However, a press release from the Co-ordination Committee (CorCom) of Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) , Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) , Progressive faction of PREPAK (PREPAK-Pro), Revolutinary People’s Front (RPF), United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and United People`s Party of Kangleipak (UPPK) has said that three constituent members of CorCom: PREPAK-Pro, RPF and UNLF were behind the ambush of the security personnel of the 39th Assam Rifles. No casualties were sustained on the side of CorCom and those who took part in the attack have returned safely to base, the release said.

Security Forces (SFs) shot dead a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadre and injured five others in an encounter in East Garo Hills District on February 9. The slain GNLA cadre is yet to be identified. According to Police, after getting information that GNLA militants numbering around six were camping in a hideout in a forest area near Megra village, nearly 10 kilometres from Songsak Police station, a Police team approached the area. Sensing trouble, the militants fired at the Police team, compelling the Police to retaliate resulting in the death of a GNLA cadre. The Police suspect that the remaining five GNLA militants, who escaped, were injured in the encounter. A grenade and a pistol were recovered from the hideout.

A camp of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was jointly busted by Meghalaya Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Arenda (on the Assam-Meghalaya border) under Mendipathar Police Station in East Garo Hills District of Meghalaya, reports The Telegraph. An encounter took place for over half-an-hour but the militants managed to flee. The Shillong Times reports that Security Forces (SFs), on April 8, stormed a major hideout of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in which the outfit’s ‘chief’ Sohan D Shira was holed up leading to a 15 minutes heavy exchange of fire in the forests of Bawegre village, 10 kilometers from the East Garo Hills District headquarters in the morning, following intelligence reports of militant movement. Shira managed to escaped but left behind a huge number of highly explosive rocket propelled grenades. The SFs recovered 66 live RPG shells neatly packed and concealed in one of the three camp tents set up in the forest.

The incident happened when a large group of armed Policemen returning to Tura after conduct of anti-insurgency operations were targeted by the GNLA militants who detonated the explosive hidden on the side of a road culvert at Daji Tesakgre village, just 3 kilometres from Chokpot between 3:30 and 4 pm. The militants, suspected to be led by ‘area commander’ Baichung Momin, laid the trap for the Police truck but the explosion took place just before the truck crossed the culvert. As soon as the blast occurred there was exchange of fire as the militants who were hiding up in the nearby hills tried to attack the Police personnel who also responded with heavy firing forcing the militants to flee. At least four cadres of Lungam Group of Kuki National Army (KNA-Lungam) including its ‘commander-in-chief’ Lunkhongam have been killed in a reported shoot-out with Security Forces (SFs) at Phaikok village located close to Myanmar border in Ukhrul District. The shoot-out took place on June 30 afternoon at Phaikok village which is about 40 kilometers away from Chassad Police station to the South. The encounter involved troops of 44 Assam Rifles and some cadres of KNA-Lungam group who were taking shelter in an isolated hut. Two AK rifles, one M-16 rifle, one radio set and 200 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the slain cadres, informed a source. Information about the shoot-out was received only on July 1 due to remoteness of the encounter site and lack of communication infrastructure. Details of the slain cadres are not available still. KNA-Lun-gam is a breakaway faction of KNA which is under SoO pact.

Acting on a tip-off about presence of a group of NLFT militants headed by Bikaram Bahadur Jamatia alias Bhamtom in the jhum hut, a strong contingent of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) led by Subedar Bankim Debbarma launched special operation. Around 12.15 pm, when the troops were on way to cordon off the jhum hut, the militants started fleeing from the site but one was shot dead as the TSR opened fire sensing the trouble. Police said, militants while fleeing also fired back that resulted in fierce gun battle between both sides. Majimonipur is situated close to Indo-Bangla border. Border Security Force (BSF) has intensified their vigil along the border immediately after the incident.

One United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militant was killed and another injured in an encounter with the Army at Insushi village, Nangtao under Namsai circle in Lohit District of Arunachal Pradesh in the afternoon of September 14. According to sources, the Assam Rifles unit, acting on specific information raided the militant’s hide out at about 2 pm. The sources claimed that one militant was killed on the spot and another critically injured during a fierce encounter with the militants. One of the militants, the sources further claimed, however, managed to escape. The identity of the slain militant is yet to be ascertained. Combing operation is continuing in and around the area to arrest the other militant. Details are awaited.

In one incident, a militant suspect was killed in an alleged encounter with a team of Police commandos in the night of September 15 at Kharasom village under Lamlai Police station of Imphal East District. A .9 mm pistol loaded with three live rounds, one Chinese made hand grenade, a mobile handset and an Activa Honda brand scooter were recovered from him, police said, adding that the dead body is awaited for official identification. Security Forces (SFs) shot dead a suspected militant at an inter village road connecting Uchekon to Toubungkhok near Jamini Ashram under Lamphel Police Station in Imphal West District at about 5.40pm on September 25. SFs were conducting a frisking operation at the area when the suspected militant came on foot and on seeing the SFs, took out a hand grenade and hurled it towards the security personnel, without causing any casualty. The SFs also retaliated and in an ensuing encounter, the individual was killed. A grenade pin, 3 empty cases of .9 mm pistol and a pistol of the same caliber was recovered from the slain individual.

The third militant escaped from the site. The well planned operation began during the morning hours when a hardcore GNLA sympathizer, Sabithson Sangma was arrested by Policemen in plain clothes when the former had come to Tura to purchase a mobile phone for a senior militant of the outfit. The incident occurred when a team of Army personnel from Rangjuli camp laid a trap in a dense jungle of Mebenram-Modipara, 10-12 kilometres from Adokgre.
