Zeliangrong Students' Union Manipur (ZSUM) called an indefinite blockade along National Highway (NH)-37, from January 1 midnight, reports Times of India. ZSUM called the blockade in protest against the alleged ‘fake encounter’ of a Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) militant by Assam rifles (AR) troppers.ZSUM demanded that the government punish the guilty personnel under the Zeliangrong customary laws and removal of AR from the Noney area. AR in a statement said that on January 1 morning, around four ZUF militants opened fire at the forces and an encounter ensued, killing one cadre. The troops seized a .22 pistol with four bullets and 14 fired cases of AK-47 from the site. The slain cadre joined Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) in 2006 and obtained training at Buning Camp, it said, adding that he deserted the outfit in 2011 and joined the ZUF and was operating under ‘captain’ Abung of ZUF.

The Sangai Express reports that four militant suspects were reportedly killed in an encounter with troops of 39 Assam Rifles at Behiang area of Churachandpur District under Churachandpur Police Station on January 21. Press Information Bureau (PIB-Defence Wing), in a statement said that the four killed belonged to the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and Peoples Liberation Army (PLA). At about 3 am, the troops intercepted the armed men trying to infiltrate from across the border and a fierce gun fight ensued in which four militants were killed, said PIB. Based on reliable inputs about militants trying to infiltrate into India and carry out Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attacks on the Security Forces, troops of Red Shield Division launched an operation to in the border area of Churachandpur, said PIB. Two AK series rifles, two pistols and large quantity of arms and ammunition and other stores were recovered from the site, said PIB and added that from the documents recovered, it has been established that the plan was to disrupt Republic Day function at Imphal, Bishnupur and Churachandpur, claimed PIB.

The gun fight occurred between SK Thadou faction and Robert faction of the UTLA. A fierce gunbattle broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants at Bolchugre village in Songsak under East Garo Hills District on February 6, reports The Shillong Times. Superintendent of Police (SP), East Garo Hills, JFK Marak said that the gunfight erupted after the sentry of the GNLA militants, who were camping in a house, first spotted the Police team and fired upon the special squad of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA) commandos. This forced the security personnel to retaliate. However, the militants managed to flee taking advantage of the thick forest and there was no report of any casualty.

Security Forces (SFs) arrested two Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants including the ‘deputy area commander’ of West Garo Hills and recovered arms and ammunition on February 9 after an operation in West Garo Hills District, reports The Shillong Times. According to police, the deputy area commander of GNLA, Brightwell Arengh alias Chiga (29), and Napsen ch Marak (30) were arrested while the area commander escaped after a brief exchange of fire between the militants and the SFs at Chigitchakgre area at around 11:45 pm. Police recovered one AK-47 rifle, 55 rounds of live ammunition and communication equipments among others from the hide out of the militants.

The Shillong Times reports that one of the most wanted Garo national Liberation Army (GNLA) leader and the outfit’s area commander for Tura region, Hedio Momin alias Karak escaped after a Police raid at Nalnapara village under Dalu Police station (West Garo Hills District) on February 12 evening. Hedio, who is among the most sought after Garo militant leader after its ‘chief’ Sohan D Shira and is wanted for attacks on former Community and Rural Development Department (C&RD) Minister Saleng A Sangma and his supporters, had taken shelter in a house inside the village. Acting on a tip off, West Garo Hills Police conducted a raid at Nalnapara which led to the exchange of fire between the militants and Security Forces. One of the GNLA cadre was hit during the encounter and Police believe that the area commander may have been wounded in the process. Hedio has been running a reign of terror in the Gambegre-Kherapara and Chokpot region for the last few months.

Nagaland Post reports that a cadre of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), identified as ‘2nd Lieutenant’ Kasheto Kinnimi, was killed in the morning of February 25 after a gun fight with India Reserve Battalion (IRB) troopers near Aotsakili-Kithsakisa area under Zunheboto District. Police sources said the incident occurred when one of the two vehicles carrying troopers developed technical problem and suddenly met a group of armed NSCN-K cadres in full uniform traveling in two vehicles-a Maruti Gypsy and Maruti Van. Sources said NSCN-K cadres reportedly fired upon the troopers and in the resultant exchange of fire one NSCN-K cadre was shot and killed while the rest fled and escaped into the forest. The incident took place while the legislator was heading for his home town from Shillong and was passing through Rongmil village near Dainadubi on NH-62 at around 11:30 pm. The exchange of fire lasted for about three hours, informed Tirap Superintendant of Police (SP) Vikramjit Singh. "As per our source, the NSCN cadres were numbered around 40 and were heavily armed. Though lesser in number, the Assam Rifles personnel stood their ground and bravely fought them," Singh said. The incident happened when the cadres of NSCN-IM, on March 16, launched an assault on healthcare workers, including doctors, of Soha for not meeting their ransom demands. The circle officer and a Police team rushed to the village, but found the road blocked by the insurgents, who directed them to go back. When the officials refused to head back, the militants reportedly fired on them and set the circle officer's vehicle afire. The recoveries included four AK 47 rifles, one M-16 Rifle and one A3 Rifle, seven magazines of AK 47, two magazines of M-16, 47 live rounds of AK 47 and 38 live rounds of M-16. Following the exchange of Fire with RBA the militants retreated towards the forest area of Chirang District and fired on the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) troopers who were patrolling near the border. In retaliation the SSB troopers fired shots and conducted search operation in the area and at Lalai River near Sashipur area under Amguri Police Station in the District. Later, in the evening the SSB jawans recovered one cap used by the NDFB-IKS militant besides four empty and one live cartridges of AK-47 rifle, sources said. According to the sources, two NDFB-IKS cadres were injury in the encounter. Security sources also claimed that the NDFB-IKS leader, B Bidai was injured in the incident. The modus operandi of the militant was to push back the Bhutan Army from the border area so that they can enter into the Bhutan territory, sources said. Chirang Superintendent of Police (SP), Kumar Sanjit Krishna said, “The Royal Bhutan Army chased two youths in the border area and fired at them. When the youths were running towards Indian side, the SSB jawans on patrol duty blank fired on them”. However, no casualty was reported from the SSB side, the sources said.

Police sources reveal that when the attack was launched on the camp, the militants returned fire and the gun battle lasted over an hour. The destruction of the general camp is said to be a major blow for GNLA ‘chief’ Sohan D Shira since it housed the outfit’s cadres and was also used to provide training to new recruits.

In the gun battle, the militants fled leaving behind a 7.65 mm pistol with an extra magazine, four rounds of ammunition and one identity card of a GNLA cadre identified as Wanjang Sangma. “We do not know if any of the militants was hit but a combing operation is underway,” District Police chief Davis Nestell R Marak said. He said that the second in command of the GNLA in Chokpot region known as ‘Sky’ was part of the group that exchanged fire with Police before fleeing. Recently, GNLA military ‘chief’ Sohan D Shira appointed a new commander, ‘Jangjang’, for the Chokpot area.

Nagaland Post reports that Dimapur District Police rescued an abducted businessman after a brief exchange of fire at a teak plantation in Tulazouma and also arrested one of the kidnappers, identified as one Akashe Shohe (26), on November 15. One magazine along with eight live rounds of M-20 pistol and two empty cases of 9 mm pistol were recovered from the scene. The arrestee revealed that he was Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Unification (NSCN-U) cadre and that on November 15, he along with three others - Akato, ‘Leacy’ of NSCN-U, Johnson, ‘lieutenant’ of NSCN-U and one Viloto carried out the abduction of the businessman. Dimapur Police, in a press release, said a complaint was lodged with Police by victim’s brother that some militants had abducted his brother. Thereafter, Police said victim’s brother reportedly started receiving ransom call from the kidnappers directing him to hand over INR 50,000 - which was negotiated down from INR 1,50,000 - for his brother’s safe release.

Dismissing the news report that said that cadres of the NSCN-K were involved in the encounter, the publicity wing of the NSCN-K said the outfit would not remain a silent spectator if the current trend continues. It urged both the warring outfits [ZUF and NSCN-Isak-Muivah-(NSCN-IM)] to retreat to their own area. Three suspected Nehlun faction of Kuki National Front (KNF-Nehlun) militants were killed in a reported gun fight with a combined Security Forces (SFs) at Bongbal Kholen in Senapati District in the morning of December 11. The Assam rifles press release said that the combined team while conducting combing operation in a hilly and a thickly wooded area, were fired upon at about 6.30 am. During the ensuing exchange of gun fire the SFs killed three suspected KNF-N cadres, all wearing combat pattern dress. One M-16 Rifle with 300 live rounds, one AK 47 Rifle with 93 live rounds, one G-3 Rifle with 173 live rounds, four live rounds of 12 Bore Rifle, 34 live rounds of US Carbine, two notebooks containing incriminating details and other war like stores were recovered from their possession. In the fire fight, one armed cadre was possibly injured; however, he managed to escape under the cover of dense jungle. Significantly, the KNF-N is not a party to the Suspension of Operations (SoO) pact with the Government of India and the State Government.

A fierce gunfight between Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger (KPLT) militants and security Forces took place in the remote Borlangso hill area under the Chokihola Police Station of the Bokajan subdivision in Karbi Anglong on December 29, reports The Assam Tribune. According to information received, a group of KPLT militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, entered the Borlangso village and attempted to set several houses ablaze. No casualty on either side has been reported so far, sources said. Miscreants accompanied by suspected KPLT militants torched around 20 abandoned houses at a Rengma village in the Borlangso area of the district adds The Telegraph. Earlier, seven houses belonging to Rengma people were torched by unidentified miscreants on December 27 in a village, located 3 km away from the Chokihola Police Station.

After much persuasion by the Centre and the state Government, the cadres moved out of their camp. However, before their exit there was an exchange of fire with the mob, in which one person was wounded. The total number of injured since December 29, 2013, has risen to six. An NSCN source said the cadres vacated the camp on their own but sources said they did so only after much discussion with the Centre and the state Government.
