Pakistan Army is reported to have set a vast portion of grass on fire on its side opposite Balakote sector in Mendhar tehsil (reenue unit) of Poonch District in the night of January 6 with a view to divert attention of SFs on this side. The fire spread into Indian territory in the morning of January 7 leading to a series of mine explosions on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC). Official sources said there was no immediate threat to civilian population on Indian side as the fire was still across fencing but added that it was spreading very fast as there was a huge growth of ‘sarkanda’ and grass on either side of the LoC. There were specific inputs that fire, which spread from Pakistan Army’s posts of Kandli and Khara opposite Balakote sector, was a deliberate act of the Pakistan Army to keep LoC active for some days as there was no way to control the flames.

Two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants, holed up in a house, were killed at Kuchwa Muqam village of Chandoosa in Baramulla District by the Security Forces (SFs) on February 17, reports Times of India. Intense firing and powerful blasts rattled the village, located on Baramulla-Gulmarg road during the encounter which started at around 7am (IST) and lasted for 11 hours. The residential house, where the militants had taken shelter, was also damaged. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP, Baramulla) Shakeel Ahmad Beigh said the village was cordoned off in the night of February 16 and the firing started when the militants refused to surrender. The house where the militants were hiding caught fire at around 3pm, shortly after a powerful blast which was reportedly triggered by the SFs to eliminate the militants, official sources said. 15 minutes later, another powerful blast ripped through the house, the sources said, adding, SFs set off a third explosion at around 5pm, razing down the structure to neutralise the militants holed up there. The SSP told Daily Excelsior that the slain militants belonged to JeM outfit. "Two rifles, four hand grenades and some ammunition have been recovered from the scene of the encounter," he added.

A large number of evening walkers and children had a narrow escape as the militants triggered a powerful explosion in the Pritam Park at Parade Ground in Poonch town in the evening of June 29, reports Daily Excelsior. The local improvised device had been planted in basement of a ‘saroo’ tree without digging the land to ensure that it was not detected by the evening walkers and children who start gathering at the park near District Hospital at 6.30pm every day. The blast, however, took place at 5.55pm. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP, Poonch) Manmohan Singh told Daily Excelsior that the explosive device, though locally made, was very powerful and capable of causing casualties. A Chinese remote control device was recovered from the site of explosion by Police which indicated that the blast was triggered with remote control by the militant(s), the SSP Poonch said.

Violence escalated in Kashmir Valley on August 1 leaving at least eight people, including a woman, dead in two separate incidents in Pulwama District, reported The Hindu. While four people were killed in Police firing in Pampore, four more died when an ammunition store exploded in the Khrew Police Station after it was attacked by a mob. Unofficial reports said two people injured in the violence too died. In Pampore, Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel opened fire on protesters who were trying to block the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, killing two people. Several others were injured. The protests gained further momentum in Pampore and adjoining areas and thousands of people took to the streets and set ablaze the office of the tehsildar (junior revenue officer) and a Government vehicle. As the protests spread to nearby Khrew and people took to the streets, the Police again opened fire injuring several people. Afroza, a 22-year-old woman, and Mudasir Ahmad died of injuries. Following this a mob marched to the local Police Station, surrounded it and set it ablaze. There was an explosion in the ammunition store after a gas cylinder burst.
