Police neutralised one of the biggest training camps of the Maoists in the Saranda forest area after a major operation, which lasted for 72 hours, according to Statesman. A joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force, Jharkhand Armed Police and officers from eight police stations and special force personnel from Ranchi and neighbouring Chaibasa had raided a remote corner of the forest area late on December 31, 2005 close to the Kayangdera village of Sonuwa police station area of West Singhbhum district and the Rania police station borders of Ranchi district. However, during a brief exchange of gunfire, the Maoists managed to escape. Documents seized from the training camp suggested that Maoists were planning a major attack either on the Khunti sub-jail or on the Simdega jail on the lines of Jehanabad attack. Huge quantities of food, blankets, folding chairs, tables, tents, generator sets and other articles of daily use were seized from the camp. Superintendent of Police, Navin Kumar Singh, added that Maoists had erected watch towers on tree tops at regular intervals to keep a close watch on any movement close to the training camp, while at the same time had planned an attack on seven neighbouring police stations to loot arms and ammunition.

Udayagiri sub-jail and other Government establishments in Gajapati district on March 24 has risen to four. In the pre-dawn strike, a group of over 200-armed Maoists, including women and few sympathizers, had attacked the sub-jail in R. Udayagiri town, freed 40 prisoners, killed three police personnel, and took a police officer and the jailor hostage. The Maoists reportedly pulled down the jail gates to help prisoners escape and also simultaneously attacked the police station, an Orissa Special Armed Police Camp, the treasury, the tehsildar’s (local administrative official) office and a telecom tower. The exchange of fire reportedly lasted around two hours. Police said the two who were taken hostage by Maoists were the officer in charge of the police station, Ranjan Kumar Mallick, and the jailor, Rabinarayan Sethi. According to the District Collector, Binod Bihari Mohanty, the Maoists also looted arms from the police station, including 25 self-loading rifles, a pistol, a light machine gun and an AK-47 rifle. The Maoists also burnt stamp papers worth nearly Rupees 40 lakh in the treasury. The Maoists had approached the town from two directions and retreated after the attack via Saralapadar into the deep jungles. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told the Legislative Assembly on March 24 that the Maoists were believed to have come from the Vizianagaram district of neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. They reportedly conversed in Telugu, Hindi and Soura (a tribal dialect). Media reports added that in a related incident, one civilian was killed and nine others were injured in a landmine blast at Kankadaguda, 10 kilometers from R. Udaygiri, while clearing the trees from the roads. The landmine was reportedly planted by the Maoists while retreating.
