Two Police personnel were injured in an encounter with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in a forest under the Chintalnar Police Station limitsin Sukma District of Chhattisgarhon January 10, reports The Pioneer.The Maoists fired on a team of District Reserve Guards (DRG), injuring two personnel, when they were cordoning off the forest which is on the border of Sukma and Bijapur Districts, a senior Police official said. Security Forces (SFs) destroyed a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp in Pujariguda forest at Bonda Ghat area in Malkangiri District of Odisha on January 16, reports Odishabytes. As per the report, a joint team of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel conducted a search operation on January 13 on the basis of the intelligence input about Maoists having set up a camp inside the forest. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said, “During the search operation on January 16, the Maoists hiding inside the forest suddenly opened fire on us. An exchange of fire ensued and the Maoists fled the area. The security personnel later busted a camp inside the forest and seized several articles. A fresh search operation has begun in the forest to track down the rebels.”

A joint team of District Police and Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF’s) 60 battalion destroyed a camp of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and arrested a cadre in Sinko forests under Bandhgaon Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on January 18, reports The Times of India. As per the report, on receiving a tip off about the presence of the PLFI cadres in the said forest, the Security Forces (SFs) had launched an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. As soon as the SFs reached the forest, cadres of PLFI fired shots at them leading to an exchange of fire. "The exchange of fire lasted for about 20 minutes, resulting in the extremists fleeing from their camp. We have arrested a rebel and our interrogation is on to ascertain his identity and his involvement in extremist activities," said the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Pranav Anand adding that SFs recovered a 9mm pistol, a single barrel gun and a few cartridges, besides items of daily use from the PLFI camp.

An exchange of fire took place between cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and Security Forces (SFs) in the Sumerbandh area under Phiringia Police Station limits in Kandhamal District of Odisha on January 18, reports The Pioneer. On receiving inputs about the presence of Maoists of the KKBN (Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh) Division in the forest, Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel launched a combing operation. But spotting the SOG personnel, the Maoists opened fire, to which the police retaliated leading to a gun-battle. However, there were no reports of any casualties from both sides. Following the gunfight, the SFs destroyed a Maoist camp and have launched a combing operation in the area to trace the fleeing Maoists.

A woman cadre of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area between Tekalgudem and Basaguda villages in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 19, reports The Hindu. As per the report, the incident took place when a team of 168th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a unit of its 204th CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) battalion and State Police were conducting an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation in the said area. After the exchange of fire, body of a female Maoist along with three rifles have been recovered from the spot, said the Officials adding that a search of the area is ongoing and the identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

The Security Forces (SFs) neutralised a camp of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) after an exchange of fire with Maoists in Rayagada District of Odisha on January 26, reports The Times of India. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Saravana Vivek M., on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists at a road construction site in Niyamgiri forest, a joint team of SFs launched a combing operation in the area. On seeing the SFs, the Maoists detonated three Improvised Electronic Devices (IEDs). The SFs escaped the explosion and retaliated leading to a gun-battle and subsequently destroying the Maoist camp. No injuries were reported from both sides in the incident. The SFs seized a huge cache of ammunition and other material from the camp.

Five cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were arrested from Perimilibhatthi forest at Bhamragad area in Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra, following an exchange of fire between Maoists and the Police personnel on January 29, reports The Indian Express. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Shailesh Balkawade, said, “A C-60 team of Police had launched an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation on the basis of intelligence input that there was a Maoist meeting happening near the forest. An exchange of fire ensued between our parties and the Maoists numbering around 40. After about 15 minutes of exchange of fire, Maoists decamped from the spot. But the Police team followed them and five of them were arrested after a second round of exchange there.” The arrested cadres were identified as – Rainu Sonu Wadde (20),Bandu Chukku Wadde (25) – both a residents of Padmakot village of Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh and members of Kutul Dalam (armed squad) of the State; Sukhram Soma Usendi (40), Doghe IrpaUsendi (30) – both residents of Usewada in Narayanpur District and Keye Saybi Wadde (40). The latter three cadres are the ‘militia members’ of CPI-Maoist. The Police have recovered three weapons and material from their possession.

As per the report, on receiving a tip-off that a squad including women cadres of Maoist ‘commander’ Santosh Mahto alias Mithlesh Singh alias Durvodhan Mahto was camping in the area, the Bokaro Police along with the 26th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted a search operation. Two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre were killed an exchange of fire between CRPF personnel and Maoists in a forested area at Irapalli village under Pamed Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 10, reports The Times of India. Six other CRPF personnel, including an officer, were also injured in the encounter. According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P., separate teams of Security Forces (SFs) comprising the 151st and 204th battalions of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), had launched a counter-insurgency operation in the Maoist core areas of Sukma and Bijapur Districts on February 9. On the following day, personnel of the CoBRA, while advancing through the said forested area came under fire from the Maoists, triggering a gun-battle between the two sides, the IGP said, adding that two constables were killed in the gunfight, while six others sustained injuries. The body of a slain Maoist along with a weapon was recovered from the encounter spot, said the IGP, adding that the identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained.

According to the Police, on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists in the border area of Dantewada and Bijapur Districts, a joint team of Dantewada District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Special Task Force (STF) had launched a search operation. A senior Police Official said, acting on a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists in the area, a joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the District Police was out on an anti-Maoist operation. While the patrolling team was cordoning off the forested area, a gun-battle broke out between the two sides. According to the Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP), Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, following intelligence reports on the congregation of armed Maoists at the said forest near Tulsi pahad hill, personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) of Malkangiri had launched “cordon and search” operations in the area. During the operation, the SFs discovered a secret camp of the Maoists and on seeing the SFs, the Maoists opened fire at them leading to an exchange of fire. As per the Police Officials, Ranai was an ‘area committee member’, and in-charge of the East Bastar division supply team. She was an active cadre of the East Bastar division since 2007 and was believed to be involved in more than a dozen of Maoist attacks in the Narayanpur area. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohit Garg, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was out on a counter-insurgency operation in the area. As per the report, Ganjhu had at least 10 cases registered against him in Latehar, Chatra and Palamu Districts. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres exchanged fire with Security Forces (SFs) following the recovery of 60 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from two separate locations under Goilkera Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on June 12, reports The Times of India. The first recovery was made after teams comprising District Police, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and a Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stumbled upon a codex wire planted along the Kuida-Hatiburu road during a patrol. Upon digging out the area, 40 live IEDs, including can bombs and cooker bombs, planted in a series circuit, were recovered. The second recovery of 20 IEDs were made from Merelgora area in the District. While the SFs were busy removing the bombs, Maoists opened fire, resulting in retaliatory fire from the SFs, following which the rebels retreated. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said the search operation in the area was launched earlier in the day on a tip-off about the movement by Maoists in the forest cover of Goilkera and Sonua Police station areas.

In one incident, Maoists exchanged fire with a team of Police in the forest near Thokkuguda village of Thiryani Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Komaram Bheem Asifabad District on July 14. No casualties were reported on any side and the Maoists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishnu S. Warrier said, “around 10.30 p.m. on July 14, when Police parties were searching in Thokkuguda village, a Maoist Dalam (armed squad) carrying AK 47 and SLR weapons attempted to fire at us and we retaliated. As a result, the Dalam fled from the scene in the dark.” Following this incident, Police arrested a Maoist sympathiser – Kova Ananth Rao of Thokkuguda in Thiryani Mandal for sheltering the Maoist Dalam. According to the SP, Kova Ananth Rao gave food and shelter to the Dalam led by State Committee member Mailarepu Adellu alias Bhaskar. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava said, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police launched an operation based on a specific input that senior Maoists had convened a meeting of people from Tetam, Tela, Jiakorta and other villages in a bid to force them to observe the Martyrs Week (July 28 to August 3) in memory of their slain leaders. When the patrolling team was near Tetam, the Maoists triggered IED (Improvised Explosive Devise) blasts and opened fire on SFs that led to the gun-battle. When the gun fell silent, the SFs arrested Hidma Madvi (23), a ‘jan militia member’ along with a 15-year-old girl and a boy aged 16. Also, detonators, Maoist banners, fire crackers, medicines and items of daily use were recovered from the spot, the SP said adding that “the minor girl was part of the Chetna Natya Mandli (cultural wing of Maoists) while the boy was active as a ‘militia member’. All the three were allegedly tasked with arranging commodities of daily use for senior cadres, spreading Maoist propaganda, damaging roads and conducting reconnaissance on police.” In other incidents, two Maoists, identified as Mahesh Yadav (32) and Manku Modiyam (32) were arrested from separate places in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on August 1. While Yadav was arrested from Tindodi village under Bhairamgarh Police Station limits, Modiyam was arrested from Chilnar village under Bijapur Police Station limits in the District. A Police officer said, Yadav was involved in the killing of Policeman -Somaru Poyam and injuring his parents at their house in Matwada village on July 1. On the other hand, Modiyam was wanted for killing a Police official and snatching his AK-47 rifle in Pamalwaya area in the District in 2011.

As per the report, acting on a tip-off about movement of a group of 20-25 Maoist cadres in Jerka reserve forest within M. Rampur Police Station limits of Kalahandi and Burhani forest in Kandhamal District, a joint operation was launched by Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) of both the Districts as well as two units of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) and personnel belonging to CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action). The Kalahandi District Superintendent of Police (SP) B. Gangadhar said, during combing operations, the SFs came under indiscriminate firing from the Maoists. Sources said Tippagarh Local Organizational Squad (LOS) and Platoon 15 were present at the place when they were surrounded by the commandos. The encounter lasted for around 45 minutes following which the Maoists started retreating, later, the slain bodies of five Maoists, their pittoos (rucksucks), one INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle and two other firearms were recovered from the encounter site. Apart from Tippagarh Dalam (armed squad), Korchi Dalam too was present at the site. According to Kerala Police, the slain cadre has been identified as Velmurugan from Tamil Nadu. On combing the area, the patrol found a body along with .303 rifle, while the others escaped. According to Police, Velmurugan was an expert in handling arms, propagating Maoist ideology and was an active member of the CPI-Maoist. He was on the run since 2012 and has cases registered against him in Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The slain Maoists are identified as Ayte Mandavi, who was active as a Maoist ‘Malangir Area Committee (MAC) member’, carrying a reward of INR 500,000 on her head and ‘intelligence head’ of the area and Vijje Markam, a ‘military intelligence member’ in the MAC who carried a reward of INR200,000 on her head. A pistol and a muzzle-loading rifle has been recovered from the encounter site.
