A Special Task Force (STF) constable was injured during a fierce encounter between the Security Force (SFs) and Communist party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in the Dongerjog Forest area in Gariyaband District of Chhattisgarh on January 2, reports The Times of India. STF chief Vijay Pandey said that the security personnel were conducting a search operation when the rebels opened fire, leading to an encounter at Dongerjog Forest area. A constable Yuvaraj Sagar, who had sustained bullet injuries on his abdomen, airlifted to the State capital, Raipur, for treatment at a super specialty hospital, and his condition was reported to be stable.

One cadre of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed in an encounter took place between the Police and Maoists in the Pachrukhia Hill area under Madanpur Block in Aurangabad District of Bihar on January 5, reports prabhatkhabar.com. Aurangabad Superintendent of Police (SP), Kantesh Kumar Mishra said that on January 5 evening, the Commando Battalion for resolute Action (CoBRA) personnel were conducting a search operation, and during this, on seeing them, the Maoists started firing, to which the soldiers also took the front and started retaliation. However, Police personnel are safe in the incident. Meanwhile, the Maoists also triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast, as has been confirmed by the SP himself. The identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘politburo’ member Misir Besra and his squad members managed to escape following an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand early on January 10 (today), reports The Tribune. Acting on a tip-off, Jharkhand Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a search operation during which Maoists opened fire on them, to which SFs retaliated, leading to a fierce gun-battle in a forest between Tumbahaka and Sarjamburu under Tonto Police Station area on January 9, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajay Linda said. However, Besra and his squad made a hasty retreat into the thick forests, and no casualty had been reported on either side, SP, Linda said, adding that a combing operation is under way.

Odisha Police with the help of Security Force (SF) personnel busted a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp and seized a huge cache of explosive materials and other Maoist items in dense forest area near Chhattisgarh border under Komna Police limits in Nuapada District of Odisha on January 12, reports sambadenglish.com. Sources said an exchange of fire took place between the SF personnel and the ultras inside the forest last night (January 12), however, the Maoists later managed to fled the spot. Nuapada Police said, “Acting on Intelligence input regarding camping of a large number of CPI Maoists in dense forest area near Odisha-Chhattisgarh border to carry out various anti-security forces strategies and other subversive activities, an anti-Naxal operation was launched by combined security forces of SOG [Special Operations Group], DVF [District Voluntary Force] and CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] on January 7.” At around 8.45 am on January 9, when the commandos of SOG and DVF were conducting search operation in the forest area of Sunabeda Reserve Forest, around 50 to 60 armed Maoists opened indiscriminate fire at the security forces. The team retaliated in self-defense. Again on January 10, a combined team of SOG, DVF and CRPF was sent to that area for reinforcement, informed the cops. During search operation at about 9.45 am on January 12, armed Maoists again opened fire at the SFs and the latter retaliated, following which the Maoists fled the area. During a search operation, the combined SFs recovered several explosive and Maoist materials, including G.I. wire, tarpaulin, codex wire and a battery (12 V Big).

Sudhakar, a ‘divisional committee (DVC) member’ and senior member of Telangana ‘state committee’ of Maoist was gunned down, Bastar range, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P. said. According to him, a search party of Greyhounds, the elite anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] squad of Telangana State, commandos, was out on anti-Naxal operations in the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border following inputs on the movement of Sudhakar along with 40-50 Maoists in the area, and in the ensuing encounter Sudhakar was killed. One Self Loading Rifle (SLR) and one INSAS [Indian Small Arms System] assault rifle was also recovered by security personnel at the encounter site.

Based on a tip-off about the presence of senior Maoist cadres, an operation was launched and the security personnel were dispatched to the area, Superintendent of Police (SP), Shalabh Sinha said, adding, as the Police team reached Kosronda, ultras opened fire, prompting the personnel to launch a retaliatory action. During a search at the encounter site on February 18 morning, drag marks of bodies were found at the scene, indicating a possibility of damage suffered by Maoists. It is being told that there was heavy firing from both the sides. More than 500 rounds of bullets have been fired in the 40-minute encounter. In this, many Maoists have been claimed to have been killed and injured, however, neither the body of any Maoist nor any weapon was recovered from the spot, though, during the search, marks of being dragged away have definitely been found. Among the arrested persons are ‘zonal commander’ Balram Oraon, an accused in 82 cases, ‘sub-zonal commander’ Dashrath Singh Kherwar, ‘area commander’ Markush Nagesia and members Shaileshwar Oraon, Mukesh Korba, Viren Korba, Shailendra Nagesia, Sanjay Nagesia, and Sheela Kherwar. Kherwar and Nagesia are wanted in seven and 10 extremists related cases respectively, while others are accused persons in two cases each. During the operation, the longest in recent years, which is against the Maoist squad led by ‘regional commander’ Ravindra Ganjhu, the Police have exchanged fire with the Maoists on 10 occasions, busted their bunkers and also killed one extremist. Following specific inputs about the presence of cadres of Pedaras (Local Organisation Squad (LOS) and Katekalyan Area Committee formations of Maoists in the forests of Jiyakortha, Gorli, Mutheli and Danikortha villages along the border of Dantewada and Sukma Districts, a joint squad of personnel belonging to the District Reserve Guard (DRG) from Sukma and Dantewada, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s 230th battalion and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was sent to the area, wherein at around 11.30 am [IST], the gunfight broke out between Gorli and Mutheli. Acting on information about presence of a few Maoist cadres on the hills of Kharadi village, about 70 kilometres from District Headquarters Balaghat, a team of 50 personnel of Hawk Force, (special anti-Naxal Force of MP Police) launched the combing operation, in which the Maoists were killed. The slain Maoist trio collectively carried a reward of over INR 5.7 million on their heads. Nagesh, who carried a bounty of INR 2.9 million on him, was the ‘commander’ of Tanda area committee of Mafalling under Gondia-Rajnandgaon-Balaghat (GRB) area of Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh (MMC) corridor. Manoj and Rama, both members of the area committee, carried a bounty of INR 1.4 million each on them. Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including a woman, were killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in Pomra Forest under Mirtur Police Station limits in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on November 26 (today), reports The Tribune. Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P said that the operation involving the personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), the Special Task Force (STF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was launched based on inputs about the presence of ‘divisional committee members (DCM)’ of Maoists Mohan Kadti and Sumitra along with 30-40 colleagues in Pomra forest, located over 400 kilometres from capital Raipur. When a patrolling team of the DRG was in Pomra forest, the gunfight broke out, and after the exchange of fire stopped, the bodies of three Maoists were recovered from the spot. Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were shot dead after in an encounter with the Security Force (SF) personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG), Hawk Force, in the forests area of Motinala in the Supkhar area in Balaghat District of Madhya Pradesh on November 30, reports The Free Press Journal. Another Maoist was also shot at and injured but she was able to run away. The Maoists, who were shot dead, were identified as Ganesh Marawi (27) and Rajesh aka Banjam (19), both of them were ‘commanders’ of Bhoramdev Area Committee (Platoon) PL 2. An AK 47 rifle and a Self-Loading Rifle (SLR) were seized from their possession. According to official sources, Banjam was a resident of Sukma in Bastar under Pal Gundam Police Station, and a reward of INR 300,000 on his head was declared in Madhya Pradesh, INR 1.2 million in Maharashtra, and INR 500,000 in Chhattisgarh. The other Maoist, Ganesh, a resident of Sakin in the Narguda area of Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra, was the ‘commander’ of zone coordination committee, and carried a reward of INR 300,000 on his head in Madhya Pradesh, INR 400,000 in Maharashtra and INR 500,000 in Chhattisgarh. As the Maoists were planning to celebrate ‘People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) week’ from December 2 to 8, their activities have intensified in the area. The gunfight continued throughout the night and the bodies of two Maoists were found in the morning. On getting information about it, a team of Hawk Force began to rifle through the forests of the Supkhar area at night. On December 1, five commandos of Central Reserve Police Forces’ (CRPF) Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit were injured in gunfights with Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in a forest in the Tonto area of West Singhbhum District in Jharkhand, reports Times Now. The gunfight broke out after the extremists opened fire on approaching Security Force (SF) personnel, who were undertaking a search operation in the jungle. However, the Maoists managed to escape through the dense forest. Sanjay Anandrao Lathkar, Additional Director General (Operation) said, “There have been two clashes with Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists] in Chaibasa since morning [December 1], in which five CoBRA soldiers were injured.” As per reports, joint teams of CRPF and Jharkhand Police have been conducting a massive search operation in the area for the last two weeks to arrest Maoist leader Misir Besra, who carries a bounty of IN 10 million on his head. A large number of Improvised Explosive Devices, along with arms and ammunition were also seized during the operation.

Two women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an exchange of fire between Security Forces (SFs) and the extremists on border of Kandhamal-Boudh Districts in Matakupa Reserve Forest area under Gochhapada Police limits in Kandhamal District of Odisha on December 6, reports The New Indian Express. Basing on intelligence inputs, Kandhamal, Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Agarwal led a coordinated combing operation in the area when all of a sudden, the Maoists opened fire at the SFs. In retaliation the Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel too fired and gunned down two Maoists, Inspector General (IG) Satyabrata Bhoi said, adding, the others however escaped taking advantage of the dense forests. Bodies of two female cadres of the banned CPI-Maoist in uniform were recovered from the site. However, no injury or casualty was reported in the incident, officials said, adding that the incident was reported in Orchha Police Station limits about 65 kilometers away from district headquarters when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) were out for area domination towards Gudari village when the IED blast occurred. Soon after the explosion, Maoists, who were hiding in the area started firing at the team. In response to the same, the SFs responded to the firing, forcing Maoists to flee. The DRG and CAF teams carried out searches and recovered material used for IED explosion including wires and pieces of the pressure cooker used in the blast in the area.

The Police said the encounter took place during an anti-Maoist operation undertaken jointly by SFs of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. Bilaspur, Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjneya Varshney said, “The location of the encounter is said to be around 10 km from Maharashtra border. One woman and one man were killed. Another Maoist, who was injured in the encounter, was captured alive and we are questioning him. We have recovered three weapons – two SLRs [Self Loading Rifles] and another firearm. No one from our team suffered injury.” While the male Maoist killed in the operation is yet to be identified, the woman Maoist was later identified as Kanthi Lingavva alias Anitha (41), from Laxmi Sagar village in Kaddampeddur Mandal (administrative sub division) in Nirmal District of Telangana. She had a bounty of INR 1.6 million on her arrest from Maharashtra and another bounty of INR 500,000 from Telangana. She worked as a ‘Divisional Committee Member (DCM)’ and ‘Assistant Commander’ of Kumram Bheem Divisional Committee (KBDC). She had joined the party after being attracted to ideologies of the outfit 15 years ago. According to the Police, she is the wife of Mylarapu Adellu alias Bhashkar, a member of the Telangana State Committee and ‘secretary’ of KBDC of the Maoists. Mylarapu, who has a bounty of more than INR 2 million for his arrest, was at the spot and managed to escape, the Police said. The injured Maoist, identified as Lachhmayya Kuchha Weladi (28), from Tekameta in Bijapur, was arrested and taken into custody.

Another Maoist was arrested during the operation. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of over 18 Maoists led by CPI-Maoist self-styled 'zonal commander' Ravindra Ganju, who carries a bounty of INR 1.5 million on his head, in Korbo forest in Bagru area, a team of Jharkhand Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel launched an operation and on spotting the SFs, the Maoists opened indiscriminate fire and retaliation from the law enforcers led to an intense gun-battle, during which, the Maoists retreated into dense forests, a senior Police officer said. SF personnel arrested two Maoists during a massive search operation launched in the forest after the encounter, he said. One of the arrested Maoists, identified as self-styled 'sub-zonal commander' Chandrabhan Pahan, was seriously injured and after being administered primary treatment by the doctor of the SFs, he was taken to Sadar Hospital in Lohardaga, where doctors declared him dead. The other arrested Maoist was identified as Govind Birijia, also a self-styled 'sub-zonal commander'. Both the Maoists carried a bounty of INR 500,000 each on their heads. Pahan was wanted in over 24 cases, including 16 in Lohardaga, while Birijia was wanted in over two dozen cases.
