The combing operation is continuing in the bordering areas of Palamu and Rohtas districts to arrest the Naxalites and recover the looted police weapons. According to official sources, approximately 200 left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) attacked the Motu police station in Malkangiri district on the night of September 1. In the ensuing encounter with the Orissa Special Armed Police (OSAP), a Naxal was killed. This was the third attack on the Motu police station and sixth strike by the Naxalites in Malkangiri district since the August 9 encounter in which five police personnel were killed at the Motu and Kalimela police stations. Earlier, hours before the attack, the Director General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had visited Malkangiri district as part of a Central team to assess the situation following repeated Naxalite attack in the district, which borders Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Bihar Police arrested two left-wing extremists, Naxalites of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC), including a woman in the Sherghati area of Gaya district on September 1. Some arms were also recovered from their possession. Police sources said that at the time of the arrest, they were reportedly planning to carry out violent attacks in Gaya or adjoining area along with other members of the squad. Sources also added that the arrest is an indication that the MCC has inducted young women into its armed squad. The police are also interrogating the Naxalites to ascertain the identity of other associates, particularly that of the women.

Releasing the statistics, a senior police official said in Patna the police had 11 encounters with different extremist outfits and private armies in which nine persons, including a PWG area commander and an armed squad member, were killed.
