An alleged arms supplier to the Maoists, identified as Ravi Kumar Chevori, was arrested from Cyberabad near Hyderabad on January 1, a senior police official said. He had entered into a deal with the Maoists to supply arms and ammunition worth INR 40 lakh, which the city police seized on December 28, 2006, and arrested three persons, said Police Commissioner S. P. S. Yadav. During interrogation, the three accused revealed the name of Chevori, Yadav disclosed, adding Police teams were then dispatched to Hyderabad to arrest him. He had taken an advance of INR 7 lakh from the Maoists against supply of ammunition worth INR 40 lakh. Chevori was remanded to Police custody till January 10. The matter is still under investigation and a possibility of Pakistani link is also being probed, Yadav added.

On January 12, police neutralized a weapons-making unit belonging to the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Rourkela and arrested five Maoists, including three women. According to The Hindu, police arrested a person at Khammam in Andhra Pradesh on January 11 and recovered spare parts of rifles from him. After his confession, a Maoist den in Rourkela was raided. A laptop, party literature, CDs and parts that could be assembled into over a dozen rifles, were seized. Police sources said that the top leadership of Maoists frequented the gun-making unit.

Seven Naxalites (left-wing extremists) were arrested following a joint operation by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh Police in a border village in the Gadchiroli district on January 15. Police sources said that acting on a specific information that a Naxal camp was in progress in Chintarbela village, a police team raided the area shortly after midnight. The extremists opened indiscriminate firing, which was returned by the police. Seven Naxalites, who tried to flee from the camp, were chased and arrested. Naxal literature, tents and some other materials were seized during the operation.

On January 24, Jharkhand Police arrested a naxalite (left-wing extremist) who was carrying a consignment of arms in capital Ranchi, reports ANI. The extremist identified as Prabhu Rao, was on his way to Ratu Road in Ranchi when police arrested him. Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police, N P Singh said, “We believe these are the parts of 51 mm mortar and it was going through Naxalites. Earlier also in two trips their equipments have come in similar two, three boxes. So, their strategy is that they do not take away the complete equipments, but take them in parts to distant places or may be they will assemble it somewhere and make arms out of it.” A letter, written in Telugu, was also recovered from the arrested naxalite.

ANI reports that police in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district have arrested five persons with a cache of arms and ammunition stolen from a nearby army depot. Three grenades, 17 live cartridges of 8.5 caliber guns and two live AK-47 cartridges were recovered from their possession. Two of the five arrested persons were identified as Pushan Oraon and Bahan Munda. Police suspect that the recovered ammunition was stolen from an army depot in nearby cantonment town of Binnaguri. Police is also investigating a possible connection of the arrested persons with Maoist outfits active in the region.

Security force personnel arrested three Maoists, including two women, following a two-hour long encounter, which ensued when SFs raided a Maoist hideout close to the Andhra Pradesh border in the forests near Karamguda village under Chitrakonda Police station in Malkangiri district on January 30, reports Pioneer. Police sources informed Pioneer that 230 rounds were fired by SF personnel and 50 by the Maoists adding that the arrested Maoists were identified as Ramesh, Laxmi and Magama. They were of Telugu origin and literature written in Telugu was recovered from their possession. Police also raided several places based on the information revealed by Aitu and recovered two AK-47 rifles, two self-loading rifles, two shot guns, 150 gelatine sticks and a wireless set. Inspector-General of Police, Giridhari Nayak, said the weapons were looted by Maoists after killing seven police personnel in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra in 2005. "Aitu is a big gun. He was a terror icon in Chhattisgarh as well as in Maharashtra and sneaked into Dongargarh a few days ago from his forest hideout in Bastar, probably for medical treatment," an unnamed police official told IANS. "Aitu was involved in several offences, including an attack on a police party last year in which several policemen, including a DSP, were injured and another attack in which a train engine was set afire at Darrekasa," added the Rajnandgaon district Superintendent of Police, P. Telegraph reports that the arrested include the prime accused in the killing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML) Member of Legislative Assembly Mahendra Singh, Jayant alias Kunal alias Tuddu, who was arrested along with his accomplice Prakash while receiving treatment at Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, capital of Tamil Nadu. Others were identified as Prayag Mahto alias Prahlad of Nawadih in Bokaro, Basudev Mahto of Madhupur in Girdih and Arup Tuddu of Degagaddha in Nawadih. Pappu Jain, an arms supplier-cum-businessman from Madhupur in the Girdih district, besides two youths of Patna, who are arms dealers, were also arrested during separate raids. Head of the Anti-Terrorist Squad K.P. Raghuvanshi described the arrests of Vishnu alias Shridhar Krishnan Srinivasan, a Central Committee member of the outfit and Vikram alias Vernin Gonsalves, a member of the outfit’s Maharshtra State Committee as a "a big catch." Two pistols, gelatin sticks, 106 CDs, pen drives, a laptop and photographs were recovered from the arrested duo. The Director-General of Police P.S. Pasricha said that the two were also linked to Arun Ferreira, a left-wing extremist who was arrested by Nagpur police in May 2007. On September 19, the state police arrested a top Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader, Tushar Kant Bhattacharya, along with his associate Uma Rai from a rented house at Dujra locality in Patna, reports Patna Daily. Police recovered a huge quantity of Maoist literature, explosives, pen drive and training equipment from Tushar who was staying in Patna for the past two months. According to police officials, Tushar was involved in a number of murder cases in Naxal-affected Karimnagar, Prakasam and Adilabad districts of Andhra Pradesh between 1974 and 1980. Apart from Andhra Pradesh, he was also wanted in connection with several cases in Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Delhi. Times of India reports that on September 19, the Bihar police arrested a senior Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader, Tushar Kant Bhattacharya, and his accomplice, Umeshji, from a rented house at Dujra locality in capital Patna. A huge quantity of Maoist literature, explosives, pen drive and training equipment were recovered from Tushar who has been staying in Patna for the past two months. Tushar has been accused in a number of murder cases in the Karimnagar, Prakasam and Adilabad districts of Andhra Pradesh between 1974 and 1980. He is reported to be heading the CPI-Maoist’s Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and North Bihar units. Sahara Samay described Tushar as a member of the international department of the South Asian forum of Naxalite (left-wing extremist) organisations. Inspector General of Police, S. K. Bharadwaj told, "We have informed police of the three states about his arrest and police officials concerned and some officials from Union home ministry are expected to arrive here to interrogate the arrested Naxal leader". As the Maoists are observing the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army week beginning from December 2, police have intensified their patrolling and combing operations in the district as well as in the neighboring Koraput and Rayagada districts. However, four other Maoists, Ashok, Murali, Vimala and Bharathi, who were camping in the same area, managed to escape. Prasad joined the outfit in August 2000 as a district member in Tiger Project, moved to Palavanka dalam (squad) in 2003 and was elevated as ‘deputy commander’. Police sources said that Prasad was accused in 10 murder cases and was a key member who was monitoring operations in the Prakasam district. Reddy, who was underground for over three decades, is one of the senior most Maoist leaders and a contemporary of CPI-Maoist chief Ganapathy. He also worked as central organising committee member, central committee member, military mission member and politburo member of the outfit. Reddy, who hails from Karimnagar district in Andhra Pradesh, is in charge of the outfit’s south west regional bureau (SWRB), which includes Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. Raji Reddy, who was founder of the Singareni Karmika Sangham (Sikasa), a frontal organization of Maoists in the coal belt region of Singareni in the Khammam district, joined the Maoist fold in 1975 inspired by Kondapalli Seetharamaiah. He is known to have visited Gadchiroli in Maharashtra and spread the movement among the tribals. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Kranthikari Adivasi Mahila Sangham (Revolutionary Adivasi Women’s Organisation), a Maoist front of Adivasi women. He worked as Gadchiroli division secretary till 1985 and was later elevated as the zonal committee member of the Dandakaranya (south Bastar region) region.
