Police on February 1 claimed to have arrested a senior Communist Party of India- Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader close to central committee member Ramakrishna and who is allegedly involved in several attacks, including last year’s ambush on a Border Security Force (BSF) convoy in which four personnel were killed, reports Indian Express. Police said Chandu alias Tella Anil Kumar (40), a member of the Andhra Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee and intelligence-in-charge for Malkangiri Division, Koraput-Srikakulam Division and East-Visakha Division, was caught along with other Maoists while camping in Tala Paniki forest area in Koraput District. Explosive materials, detonators, wires, Maoist literature and a fake driving license were recovered from them.

Security Forces (SFs) arrested two hardcore Maoist cadres along with arms and explosives from a hideout at Gurania village in East Champaran District on January 1, reports The Indian Express. Acting on a tip off, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Task Force (STF) jointly raided a hideout and arrested the Maoists duo, identified as Manoj Kumar Agrawal alias Agrawal ji, and Baitha, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Operation, Sanjay Singh said. Two country-made pistols, two live ammunition, two mobile phones, a detonator and Maoist literature were recovered from the arrested ultras' possession, the ASP said, adding that both were wanted in about half a dozen cases of Maoist violence.

Gondia District Police took a Range Forest Officer (RFO) in custody on January 7 for supplying materials to the Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist) from a rest house at Navegaon Bandh area in Gondia District, reports The Times of India. Shriram Kulmethe, the RFO of Gottengaon range, was arrested from Deori. Sources from Gondia Police stated that Kulmethe and nine others, including three forest guards, were booked in August 2013 after the Police raided a forest rest house at Navegaon Bandh where the culprits were stocking up materials for supplying them to the Maoists. Apart from Kulmethe, Police had earlier arrested forest guards Vijay Meshram, Vasant Kosre and Devendra Agre for their involvement in the racket. Agre, though a guard, worked as a clerk with Kulmethe. Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Deori, Gajanan Rajmane stated that Kulmethe was the last to be arrested. "The culprits had been also providing money to the Naxals. The culprits had also procured detonators from a mine at Madhya Pradesh and handed over to the Naxals," said Rajmane.

A ‘sub zonal’ commander and three other cadres of Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC) were arrested on January 7 and remanded in judicial custody on January 8, reports The Times of India. All four of them were dressed in camouflage uniform when Police got hold of them at Dulsulma village. Police recovered two country-made weapons and 17 sim cards along with five cell phones from them. Five other uniforms were recovered from beneath a banana shaft. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ajay Kumar identified the four as Rang Bahadur Singh, sub zonal commander, Nand Deo Prasad, Indradeo Singh and Sanjay Singh. All of them in the age group of 24 to 27.

A sub-zonal ‘commander’ of Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) was arrested from Palamu District's Nawadih area when he, along with a companion, was trying to overtake Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) KN Tripathy's car on January 8, said Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP) N K Singh, reports The Times of India. Ajay's companion Dhaneshwar was also detained by Police. One AK-47 was recovered from Ajay's possession, he added. Singh claimed the recovered gun belongs to the Police department. The arrest of the sub zonal commander Ajay will prove to be a major setback to the TPC. According to the SP, Ajay was wanted in a dozen cases of theft and extortion. He had been to jail in the past. Police sources said it was Ajay who had threatened Congress MLA K N Tripathy with dire consequences two months back if he dares to venture into Nawadih under Chainpur block.

Nine more Maoists, including two with bounties on their head, were arrested in separate operations by the State Police in Narayanpur District on January 11. Narayanpur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), O P Sharma said Maoists were arrested by a joint party of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) and a team of local police, which was on an area domination operation on January 11 in Jhara forests, 400 km from Raipur. Those arrested were identified as Sarju Korram, Jairam Salaam, Mangtu Korram, Durri Salaam, Ratu Korram, Sudren Salaam, Lakhan Potai, Beersingh Korram and Baju Potai. Lakhan and Baju were carrying cash rewards of Rs 10,000 each. However, Additional Director General (ADG) Maoist operations, RK Vij, said, 39 Maoists had surrendered last year (2013) and more would lay down arms in 2014.

"Based on a specific input, the trio, who were travelling on a motorcycle with ammunition, were nabbed in Abhanpur in Raipur district of the state, when they were heading towards the Maoist-affected Kanker district of North Bastar this evening," Raipur Superintendent of Police OP Pal said. "Live cartridges, detonators and gelatin rods kept in a bag were seized from their possession which was allegedly meant for Maoists," he added. Those arrested were identified as Mohpal alias Santosh Dhruva (27), Baliram Usendi (29) and Chaitram Darro (22), all residents of Metabodli village under the Siksor police station area of Kanker. The seized consignment comprises 233 rounds of AK-47 rifle, 50 rounds of INSAS rifle, 10 rounds of 303 rifle, 20 gelatin sticks and 20 detonators, besides Rs 54,000 in cash as well as five mobile phones, he said. During interrogation, Baliram Usendi admitted that he is the village 'Sarpanch' (head of Panchayat, village level local body) of his native place, the SP said. A few months ago, the 'sarpanch' Metabodli village was allegedly murdered by Maoists during a so-called "people's court", after which Baliram was elected unopposed to this post, he said.

Security Force personnel on January 16 arrested two persons from a forest in Kotagarh Police Station area in Kandhamal District bordering Rayagada District following an encounter with the cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), reports The Times of India. Maoist literature, empty self-loading rifle cartridges, torches, towels, kit bags and some medicines were seized from them. Police is yet to share details about the seized items as the combing operation parties had not returned from the forest, where the gun-battle between them and the extremists took place, said Superintendent of Police (SP) (Kandhamal) K V Singh. The arrested were identified as Manoj Kumar Sabat (31), and Dhaneswara Badaseth (38), Police said. "We are verifying their links with Maoists. Most probably they were involved in supplying essential stuff to the radicals," said a Police officer. Police said around a dozen Maoists were present during the encounter, which started around 9 am and lasted for nearly 20 minutes. "No casualty has been reported from either side. We have no information of any Maoist sustaining injuries during the fire exchange," Singh said.

During the last three days, Police have arrested seven persons, who used to allegedly work as Maoist couriers besides serving them as suppliers and mediators. Belonging to Bhanupratappur in tribal Kanker District, all the seven accused worked for CPI-Maoist divisional committee member of Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) Prabhakar active in north Chhattisgarh. The arrested people have been identified as Santosh Dhurva, Chetram Darro, Baliram Usendi, Sukhnath Nareti, Ravi Kadiyam and Niraj Chopra, a businessman. "Maoists are developing a power structure for extortion of money from industrialists and their sympathizers are also becoming contractors for the industries having business interests in Maoist areas. It's a new phenomenon. Those arrested have confessed during interrogation that they were working for Maoists since 2009", Additional director general of police (intelligence) Mukesh Gupta said on January 17. He said Niraj Chopra and Ravi arranged meeting between contractors and Maoists for re-starting the mines in Charama in Bastar division, being owned by an industrial group. The Chhattisgarh Police on February 15 arrested three more alleged Maoist conduits, identified as Dashrath Mandavi, Rajkumar Mandavi and Laxman Mandavi and seized cash and ammunition from them in Kanker District of the north Bastar region, reports The Hindu. 47 live cartridges, gelatins, detonators and INR 11,500 were recovered from their possession. The conduits were allegedly involved in the movement of cash, supplying essential commodities to Maoists inside core forest, besides accompanying senior cadres during their travel to several parts of the region. Dashrath had a key role in transferring cash while Rajkumar was the close aide of ‘divisional committee commander’ of Madh region, Prabhakar, who is reportedly handling the Maoist supply channel in Bastar region. With this arrest, a total of 17 Maoist couriers, including two prominent businessmen who were a part of the urban channel of the outlawed CPI-Maoist, have been nabbed in the State in the past two months.

OMP is a breakaway faction of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist). According to Police sources, Sabyasachi is not able to lure any new members into the OMP. Therefore, he is trying to mobilise cadre from other parts of the State such as Keonjhar. As per the details given by Ganjam Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashis Kumar Singh on February 16 regarding the successful operation on February 15, both the arrested OMP cadre were from Harichandanpur Police Station area of Keonjhar District and in their early 20s. The arrested persons were Bhupati Mahanta (22) from Tangarapada village and Govinda Moharana (24) of Tambahara village. On February 15, Security Forces exchanged fire with OMP cadres in Merikote reserve forest during a combing operation. According to Police, some of the items seized from the camp show that Sabyasachi was also present during the joint operation of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the Special Operation Group (SOG) on Saturday [February 15],” said the SP. A pistol and three cartridges were seized from Yadav, who has 13 cases against him and is wanted in Bihar. The Police team also unearthed 76 locally made hand grenades and different types of white and red-coloured explosive powder in the jungle of Dumar Kharn under Panki Police Station following Yadav's confession. The grenades, each weighing 10 kg, were found 3ft under the ground wrapped in plastic sheet. Security Forces (SFs) also recovered 50m of surgical thread. It took the search team six hours to trace Yadav, who was caught travelling with a local resident.

"We arrested Professor GN Saibaba this morning in Delhi and he will be brought to Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, after taking transit remand in a Delhi court," Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Gadchiroli, Ravindra Kadam, said. He has been arrested on charges of allegedly being a member of CPI-Maoist, providing logistics and helping in recruitment for the group, Kadam claimed. The name of Saibaba cropped after the arrest of a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Hem Chandra Mishra, who had claimed before the probe agencies that he was acting as a courier between Saibaba and the Maoists holed up in Abujmad forests in Chhattisgarh. Kisku has been arrested under the provisions of the Arms Act, SP Sinha said, adding a haul of weapons comprising three pistols, 23 magazines and three lathe machines, besides raw materials and equipment, have been recovered from the sites. On receiving intelligence inputs about presence of Maoists in the hills of Baddongri near Ghotiyakanhar village a combined team of District Police, Special Task Force (STF) and Indo Tibetan Boarder Police (ITBP) personnel had started on an anti-Maoist operation from Aundhi Police Station on May 14. During the searching of area, Police had a face-off with the Maoists who opened indiscriminate fire on the Police party. Later on, during the searching of area, body of a Maoist was found who was identified as Pankaj ‘commander’ of Pendri Dalam (squad) of Maharashtra. An injured Maoist identified as one Pratap was also arrested from the spot, Police said. A semi-automatic SLR rifle, 12 bore gun, single shot rifle, SLR magazine, bullets and other items of daily use were also recovered from the encounter spot. Ganjhu was arrested about a year ago near Pelawal with a laptop, other documents and a four-wheeler but was released later by the court. But this time, his arrest came at a time when he was plotting to kill some others, SP Kaushik said. "He was entering Hazaribag town in his Toyota Fortuner when police nabbed him. The Begusarai Police on July 6 arrested an alleged Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘area commander’, identified as Bihari Paswan from Khanzhapur village under Cheria-Bariarpur Police Station area in Begusarai District, reports The Times of India. Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Kumar, while confirming the arrest, said he sent a Police team after getting information of Paswan's presence at his house in Khanzhapur. "The team immediately rushed to the village and cordoned off the area. When police raided the house, Paswan opened fire on the police party while trying to escape from there. But the police foiled his plan and arrested him with a country made pistol, seven live cartridges besides four mobile phones. No Policeman injured in the incident," the SP said, adding, "several Maoist literature, documents, including diary, were also recovered from the place." Paswan is said to be the ‘area commander’ of Begusarai Gandak zonal committee. Earlier, six Maoists were arrested from Murgibigha village in Aurangabad District of Bihar on July 5, reports Outlook. SP Upendra Kumar Sharma said Police cordoned off Murgibigha village on a tip-off and arrested the six. They were arrested while loading vegetables and food items into a tempo to carry them to a nearby jungle where camps of the ultras were located, he said. Murgibigha village is located in the jungles on the border of Bihar and Jharkhand and is considered a Maoist den.

Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were arrested from the Mina Bazaar area of Muzaffarpur District on July 9, reports Zee News. Acting on a tip-off, the Police raided the area and arrested the trio, Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana said. One country-made pistol, two bullets, three ATM cards and Maoist literature were seized from them, the SP said adding the arrested have been identified as Mohammad Hatim Ansari of Sheohar District and Gopal Sahni and Birendra Sahni of East Champaran District. The three have been associated with many Maoist related incidents in the past, Rana said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) NK Singh said the duo tried to flee on seeing the security personnel leaving behind the two-wheeler but were caught after a chase. Security personnel recovered INR 1.92 lakh cash and mobile phone from them. The duo told the Police during interrogation that the money was collected from a contractor as levy and they were heading to a place to hand it over to a Naxal leader.
