The police personnel were resting in their camp in a school building in an interior area after carrying out combing operations in the Naxalite-affected Pavagada division bordering the State of Andhra Pradesh when the bombs exploded, Karnataka’s police chief, S N Borkar, told the Press Trust of India. "It is definitely the handiwork of Naxalites," he said. The Naxalite attack comes a few days after their top leader, Saketh Rajan alias Prem, was shot dead by police during an encounter along with another associate in the Chikamagalur district last week. Police suspect that the incident was in retaliation to the Chikamagalur operation.

Of the two slain Naxalites, one had a .303 rifle in his possession and the other, who was a woman, carried a single barrel weapon, three grenades and a tapancha (a locally made gun). According to Orissa Director-General of Police, B.B. Mishra, the joint police team also arrested two suspected Naxalites and recovered an SLR and a .303 rifle from their possession. Further, a generator, a photocopier, 10 bundles of olive-green uniform, three sewing machines, an iron, three grenades, a cartful of ration and three tents were recovered from the encounter site. Later, in retaliation to the encounter, Naxalites blasted six landmines at Bodigedda on the northern side of Sileru hills, targeting a police party. However, the police personnel managed to escape with minor injuries. The police also returned fire and later recovered nine live landmines.

Home Minister Ram Vichar Netam said the Maoists used 100 kilograms of explosives to blast the vehicle as it was negotiating a turn near the Panjor rivulet. Pamphlets left by the Maoists at the jail said 'Operation Jailbreak' was deliberately made to coincide with the ‘great November 13 Russian revolution’ and its aim was to "rescue our comrades and to award death penalty to select Ranvir Sena activists" lodged in the jail. The Maoists, who had reportedly taken control of all entry and exit points of the town exploded a series of bombs in front of the district Collectorate, residence of the district judge and the local S.
