East Singhbhum Police launched a massive combing operation at Ghurabandha in Ghatshila on January 17 following intelligence inputs on infiltration of armed Maoists from West Bengal, reports The Telegraph. According to intelligence sources, an armed squad of Maoists from West Midnapore District in West Bengal had taken shelter at Kudian and Hariyan pahads, in Ghurabandha. During the combing operation at the hillocks in Ghurabandha, Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers rounded up a suspected Maoist from Gian village. The Police refused to disclose the name of the villager. A senior officer said the armed Maoists, reportedly hiding in the hilly terrain, might have given Police the slip and sneaked into Odisha while the combing operation was on. Five companies of CRPF, besides two of JAP, took part in the operation that began at around 6am and lasted for over 12 hours. East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar Jha said that though the intelligence network had recently alerted the forces on the movement of Maoist ‘area commander’ (Ghurabandha) Kanhu Singh Munda and his assistant Puttu Singh Munda, information on the fresh infiltration of the rebels prompted them to launch the operation.

The Shillong Times reports that the group of seven Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres armed with AK-47 rifles and SLR rifles shot dead two gate-keeper of Songsak village, West Khasi Hills District on January 19. The two gate-keepers are identified as Arbinius D Sangma and Bahkan G Marak, both residents of Songsak village. The State Police have launched a massive manhunt to arrest the gunmen involved in the killing. The Police said the killings were related to extortion money demanded by the GNLA earlier and also to create fear psychosis among the people, particularly the coal businessmen of the area. Sources informed that the GNLA had earlier demanded an amount of INR 2 million from the Songsak Mahari toll gate in West Khasi Hills District. The killing comes barely ten days after Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, during his visit to Shallang Police outpost, had promised the local people that the outpost would soon be upgraded into a full-fledged Police Station to provide full security to the coal traders and residents of the area.

Nagaland Post reports that with six hostages abducted by militants in Mizoram untraced for a week, border fencing along the India-Bangladesh border has been stopped, officials said on April 2. “The Mizoram Armed Police, BSF (Border Security Force) and Police are continuing their combing operation to locate the captives,” a Mizoram home department official told reporters in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. He said the BSF had sought help from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) fearing the hostages may have been taken across the border by the abductors. A manager and five supervisors of a Guwahati-based company were abducted by heavily-armed militants on March 26 from their work shed at Bunghmum in Lunglei District in southwestern Mizoram, 200 kilometers south of Aizawl. Following the finding of suspected training centres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Karnataka in March 2012, the Tamil Nadu Police, including Special Task Force (STF), Q branch and District Police, have launched a combing operation in the Western Ghats, reports The Deccan Chronicle. Police teams from 12 Districts are involved in the combing operation in the hilly terrain. “There is no specific information about the presence of Maoist training centres in the forest areas. But we don’t want to take any chance,” a senior Police Officer said. The State Police had busted a Maoist training camp in Theni hills in July 2007 after the locals alerted them about the presence of the camp. The State Police are now conducting the combing operation after the Police found a suspected training camp in Dharamsalai and Chickmagalur. “Some pro-Tamil handbills were seized from the spot. So, it triggered suspicion that such groups could be working in Tamil Nadu,” Police sources said.

"An all out hunt has been launched for Tak, who had driven Laila Khan and her four other family members to Jammu. His name in the missing case of Laila Khan had surfaced after the recovery of a Mitsubishi Outlander car, parked in a shop for past several months, in the heart of Kishtwar town’’, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG, Doda-Ramban range) Gareeb Dass said. The DIG said it has now become almost certain that Laila Khan along with her four other family members had been driven to Jammu by Tak from Nasik (Maharashtra) in February 2011. Since then there had been no trace of either Laila Khan or any of her four other family members. As reported earlier, the recovery of a Mitsubishi Outlander car belonging to Laila Khan’s family has raised doubt about their involvement in Delhi High court blasts.

Following inputs from the three arrested National Liberation Front of Tripura-Biswamohan faction (NLFT-BM) militants, Tripura Police conducted searches in 10 locations across the State in the past 24 hours, reports Times of India. Sources said during a search in the houses of arrested militants, who have been provided Government accommodation under rehabilitation package following their surrender in 2004, Police in Agartala had seized some incriminating documents belonging to the outfit. The seizure also included a letter addressed to NLFT-BM ‘Chairman’ Biswamohan Debbarma in Kokborok dialect. The news report states that NLFT-BM has recently recruited some 70 freshers in the outfit, who are now undergoing arms training in Myanmar and Bangladesh. In addition, Biswamohan keeps shifting his base between Bangladesh and sometimes in Aizwal (Mizoram) and the surrendered people were actively associated with NLFT-BM network, taking advantage of the rehabilitation package. According to the report, NLFT-BM has been suffering from shortage of funds for the past one year and they could not even pay arms rent to Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K). As a result, the NLFT-BM wanted some money to procure arms and repay the rent. SFs had arrested three former NLFT-BM militants and collaborators, Dhanu Koloi, Bishu Koloi and Ratasree Koloi on June 17.

Police spotted gymnasium and recovered 12 mobile phones during their recent search to locate a tunnel on the Nabba jail premises in Patiala District, reports The Hindustan Times on August 29. Sikh militants lodged in the Nabha "maximum security" jail were working out in an illegal gymnasium and were also in touch on the mobile phone with fugitive terrorists living abroad. The jail has a total of about 650 inmates, but the gym facility was being used "exclusively" by the 50-odd Sikh militants. The entire equipment was seized by the Police on August 24. The gymnasium was set up by the pro-Khalistan Sikh Organisation for Prisoner Welfare (SOPW). Mobile call details of jail inmates have revealed that the militants were in constant touch with their colleagues in Germany, UK, other European countries, the US and the Middle East. "We suspect that militants were using voice over internet protocol (VOIP) technology to make overseas calls. Mobile tower locations have shown that the calls were made not only from the jail, but also from places en route the District courts. The SIM cards were purchased on the basis of fake identities," said Deputy Inspector General (DIG) LK Yadav, who is supervising the probe being conducted by the Patiala District Police.

Army thwarted infiltration attempt by a group of five to six Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants at forward village of Balnoi on the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar sector of Poonch District in the morning of September 27, killing two militants and forcing others to retreat to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), reports Daily Excelsior. Sources identified the slain militants as Abu Mahaz alias Khandari Kashmiri, a ‘divisional commander’ and Abu Anzala alias Abu Tallah Afghani, an ‘area commander’ of the LeT. Both of them were Pakistani nationals and were wearing Army uniform. Official sources said troops observed movement of militants trying to infiltrate into Indian Territory on surveillance gadgets installed between Roshni and Gun Hill Posts at Balnoi sector of Mendhar at 2am. Troops challenged the militants when they reached close to the fence and asked them to surrender. The militants opened firing and made attempts to sneak into this side. A heavy exchange of gun fighting between militants and the troops continued till 3.30am in which two infiltrators were killed. As the Army personnel were engaged in searches, Pakistani troops started heavy firing on Indian positions at 5.30am in an apparent bid to facilitate infiltration by remaining militants. The firing from Pakistan side continued till 8am, sources said. However, an effective retaliation by the troops forced rest of the militants to retreat to PoK. Army didn’t suffer any casualties in the firing. Troops conducted searches on the LoC and recovered bodies of both the slain militants along with a large quantity of arms, ammunition and other items.
