Two Army personnel were killed in an exchange of fire with Pakistani infiltrators along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) early on January 1, reports Daily Excelsior.The infiltrators were intercepted in the Khari Thrayat forest when they were trying to enter into India from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), officials said. Jammu-based Indian Army Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said in a statement, “Two army soldiers martyred during cordon and search operation in Nowshera sector. The operation is still in progress and further details are awaited.”The search operation was launched following information about the movement of suspected terrorists, the officials added.

Security Forces (SFs) launched massive searches against two local militants, identified as Omar Lone and Gulzar Ahmad, after inputs arrived about their presence in Magraypora Pattan area of Baramulla District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 5, reports Daily Excelsior. The 29 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army, Special Operation Groups (SOG) Pattan and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted searches in Magraypora Pattan. Sources said that these boys had joined militants and are back in their area. The troops conducted house to house searches of the village, however, no one was arrested.

The Security Forces (SFs) have recovered pamphlets of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Samnapur and Baghatola areas in Balaghat District of Madhya Pradesh, reports The Times of India on January 7. As per the report, two kinds of pamphlets were found in the said areas – one was against Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), the other was protesting against the displacement of tribals. While the Police are checking the authenticity of the leaflets, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Tiwari said, “Some papers were found. They are being verified.” He further said, “Joint teams from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are working in tandem in search operations. Inter-State issues will not crop up, and combing operations have been intensified in all affected areas of the District.”

A local militant identified as Shahid, a resident of Bijbehara area of Anantnag District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), was killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in Awantipora area in Pulwama District on January 7 (today), reports Hindustan Times. The SFs launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Churswoo village of Awantipora in the early hours of on January 7 following information about the presence of the militant there, Police said.He was asked to surrender by the SFs but he chose to engage them in a gun battle, they said, adding that the militant was killed after a brief exchange of fire.

A ‘Jan Militia (people's army) commander’ of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), identified as Deva Muchaki was arrested by Security Forces (SFs) from Aalnaar village under Kirandul Police Station limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh in India on January 12, reports Devdiscourse. As per the report, Deva Muchaki was arrested during a joint search operation by a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and local Police. A Police official said, “Muchaki is a ‘Jan Militia commander’ and has been with the CPI-Maoist for a decade. He was wanted for an attack in 2012 on a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) team in Kirandul in which six security personnel and a civilian were killed”. The official also added that Muchaki was part of a Maoist squad which set ablaze nine vehicles and machinery engaged in construction activity at the NMDC's Bailadila iron ore mine on November 24, 2019.

The Border Security Force (BSF) launched a massive search operation following the sighting of drones at Tendiwala village near Shameke sector of International Border (IB) in Ferozepur District of Punjab on January 14, reports The Tribune. As per the report, drones were sighted twice around 8.48 pm and later around 11 pm in the said location. The BSF jawans belonging to the 136 Battalion opened fire at the flying objects to bring them down. Later, a joint search operation by the BSF and the Punjab Police was carried out, however, nothing substantial was found. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the District, Vivek Sheel Soni said that the Police had received information regarding the sighting of drone-like objects following which the search was conducted to rule out any misadventure from across the border. “We have asked the villagers to report if they found something suspicious,” he said. Further, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of BSF, Sandeep Chanan said, though some flying objects were seen, it could not be ascertained whether they were drones or something else. The National Investigating Agency (NIA) conducted searches in connection with the alleged terror funding of Naga insurgent group, National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM), at five separate locations at Dimapur in Nagaland and Imphal in Manipur on January 14, reports East Mojo. The NIA official said that searches conducted at the premises of close associates and relatives of Alemla Jamir have led to recovery of cash of INR 8.26 million, documents of different properties worth INR 30 million, incriminating diaries, photographs, digital devices including 15 smartphones, one hard disk, one pen drive, one memory card and four laptops. "Certain insurgency and extortion related literature as well as other incriminating documents have also been recovered during the searches," NIA officials said. "Searches have also revealed that unaccounted money is being used in cash for purchase of properties," the official said, adding, "On January 10, the NIA special court, New Delhi had extended judicial custody of accused Alemla Jamir for one month." Alemla is alleged to be working for NSCN-IM and was detained at Domestic Airport T-1, New Delhi, with cash worth INR 7.2 million by the Income Tax officials on December 17 last year and was arrested by the special cell on the same day.

According to a spokesperson of the Punjab Frontiers BSF HQ (Head Quarters), the BSF troops heard some suspicious sound in the areas of Ferozepur and Abohar sectors. As soon as the troops noticed movement of some suspects moving towards Indian Territory ahead of border security fence, they challenged the suspected smugglers but when the suspects continued to move towards fence, they opened fire following which the Pakistani smugglers ran towards Pakistani side taking advantage of dense fog and undulated ground. According to the report, during a search operation, Police had spotted 2 to 3 ‘Jan Militia members’ in the area who, however, fled the spot on seeing the Police. Multiple NIA teams, raided various parts of Kulgam and Shopian Districts, carried out the searches at the residences of Rafi Ahmed Rather, an arrested militant, at Zainapora. The NIA teams entered into the house of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant Adil Hussain and Sarpanch Tariq Ahmed Mir besides the houses of Over Ground Workers (OGWs) at Maldera in Shopian and Kulgam, the officials said. Some documents have been recovered and these are being analysed, the officials said. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) had reported the incident of arrest on January 11. Reportedly, an i-10 car was intercepted in Kulgam area and in the car was Jammu Kashmir Police (JKP) officer Davinder Singh with two top Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants. The seizures include one light machine gun, three INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle, three carbine Sten guns, 1 Self Loading Rifle (SLR) rifle, a .303 rifle, one pistol, 202 rounds of 5.6 mm ammunition, 59 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, 42 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 4 Light Machine Gun (LMG) magazines, eight INSAS magazines, two SLR magazines, six carbine magazines, one 303 magazine, two VHF set cum scanner, one optical sight and a tiffin bomb along with explosive. According to a Police Official, on receiving a specific input about the presence of the Maoists, a joint team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local Police initiated a search operation in the forest areas of Chikpal, Badegadam, Telam and Tetam villages in the District. The cadres were arrested from the latter village while they were trying to escape. As per the report, acting on input about the movement of 20 to 30 armed Maoists in the said forest, a joint team of District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Odisha Police launched a combing operation. On spotting the SFs, the Maoists opened fire leading to a gun-battle. The rebels backtracked and managed to escape into the dense forest leaving behind their belongings and articles. As per the report, on receiving an input that the Maoists were holding a meeting under the leadership of ‘politburo member’ M. Venugopal Rao aka Bhupathi in the said area, the C-60 commandos of Gadchiroli Police initiated a combing operation. On seeing the patrolling team, the Maoists opened fire leading to an exchange of fire between the Police personnel and the Maoists in which a Maoist cadre was killed. While the identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained, the Police suspect that at least four to five Maoists were injured in the gun-battle but succeeded in fleeing along with others. Based on a tipoff about the movement of the Maoists in the region, a joint team of the District Voluntary Force (DVF), Special Operations Group (SOG) and the Border Security Force (BSF) had launched a combing operation in Panabadi, Kamalabandh, Bailguda and Urlapadu area in the District, bordering Andhra Pradesh. During the search operation, the joint team recovered a gun, a rifle, hand grenades, electronic detonators, bulletproof metal plate, and explosives along with several items used by the Maoists. During questioning, Police learnt that the LeT affiliates were motivating the youth of the area to join militancy by providing them with arms and ammunition. “They also supplied weapons to some who had recently joined the outfit and were operating in Handwara,” a Police officer said. Based on the information provided by the OGWs, a joint team of Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), 30 RR, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)’s 92 Bn and Handwara Police launched a search operation in Gund Chogal village in Handwara early on April 3, and arrested the four militants, identified as Parvaiz Ahmad Chopan, Mudasir Ahmad Pandit, Mohammad Rafi Sheikh and Burhan Mushtaq Wani — all from Langate tehsil (revenue unit) in Kupwara. A senior Police Official said, acting on a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists in the area, a joint team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the District Police was out on an anti-Maoist operation. While the patrolling team was cordoning off the forested area, a gun-battle broke out between the two sides. Although the Maoists escaped from the spot, during a search of the area, SFs spotted two men who had sustained injuries after getting caught in the crossfire, the official said adding that the duo was rushed to the Bijapur District hospital where one of them identified as, Dubba Kanhaiya (50), a native of Pusgudi village in the District, succumbed to his injuries during treatment while the other person identified as, Yalam Dharmaiyya (35), a native of the same village is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

According to the Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP), Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, following intelligence reports on the congregation of armed Maoists at the said forest near Tulsi pahad hill, personnel of the Special Operation Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) of Malkangiri had launched “cordon and search” operations in the area. During the operation, the SFs discovered a secret camp of the Maoists and on seeing the SFs, the Maoists opened fire at them leading to an exchange of fire. While taking advantage of the hilly terrain near the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border, the Maoists at the spot managed to escape, however, they left behind goods they were using, including explosive materials that were seized by the SFs.

There had been reports that another HM militant named Maqsood was also accompanying Bhat, however, during searches, his body wasn’t traced which indicated that Bhat was alone in the house and Maqsood might be hiding in Kishtwar or any other place. Police recovered one AK-47 rifle and a magazine from the possession of slain militant. Bhat was active since last year and his name had figured as one of the fabricators of the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which had targeted the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy at Banihal in March 2019 but there was no damage as the IED didn’t explode. Bhat was also part of the group which had killed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary, Chanderkant Sharma and his Personal Security Officer (PSO), Rajinder Singh, inside Kishtwar Hospital in April 9, 2019. According to information, a white Santro fitted with IEDs was on the move in Pulwama with plans to enter the highway to target a security convoy. The suspect car was intercepted at a checkpoint on May 27 night and signalled to halt which it did not, leading to the Security Forces (SFs) opening fire.A search of the vehicle later found a container packed with explosives. This container itself weighed around 50 kilograms. Later on, the nearby area was vacated and then destroyed the car in a controlled explosion. Police believe the fidayeen(suicide squad) plot to target the SFs or their installations was a joint venture of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM). Inspector General of Police (IGP), Vijay Kumar, said one Adil and Waleed Bahia, who worked for HM and JeM respectively, and two others were believed to be part of this foiled terror attempt. “Over the past year, the security forces have neutralised commanders, including Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH) founder Zakir Musa (killed in May 2019), top JeM‘commander’ Qari Yasir (January 2020), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)/The Resistance Front (TRF) ‘commander’ Asif Ahmad (April 2020), AGuH leader Burhan Koka (April 2020) and Hizb deputy commander Junaid Sehrai (May 2020). Official sources said, movement of the militants was first spotted on the intervening night of May 28 and 29 as one out of six militants trying to infiltrate from Kabootar Gala village in Kalal area in Nowshera sector stepped over an Anti-Personnel Mine (APM) leading to an explosion in the area. Since then the troops engaged the militants along LoC resulting into an exchange of fire. However, as the firing from the militants’ side stopped, the security personnel conducted searches and recovered three bodies of militants lying on the LoC. Large quantity of arms, ammunition, explosives and eatables were also lying near bodies of the militants. Recoveries included two AK rifles with 13 filled magazines, a US-made M-16A2 rifle with six filled magazines, a 9-MM Chinese pistol, one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) with six grenades, five hand grenades and two knives.

The case was originally registered at Dumri Police Station in Giridih District of Jharkhand on January 22, 2018, after the arrest of one Manoj Kumar with INR 600,000 in cash and incriminating documents. The NIA took over the case on July 9, 2018. It was alleged that Kumar had collected levy from contractors on the instructions of an absconding accused Krishna Da alias Krishna Hasda, a Jharkhand Regional Committee member of CPI-Maoist, the NIA said. During the investigation, it was revealed that Kumar was an employee of RKS Construction Private Limited Company and was acting as a conduit between the construction firm and the Maoists in Giridih District.

The first recovery was made after teams comprising District Police, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and a Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stumbled upon a codex wire planted along the Kuida-Hatiburu road during a patrol. Upon digging out the area, 40 live IEDs, including can bombs and cooker bombs, planted in a series circuit, were recovered. The second recovery of 20 IEDs were made from Merelgora area in the District. While the SFs were busy removing the bombs, Maoists opened fire, resulting in retaliatory fire from the SFs, following which the rebels retreated. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Shukla said, “a Police team was out of an anti-Maoist operation in the said location and sensing presence of security personnel the Maoists opened fire. The encounter lasted for about 30 minutes after which the Maoists fled from the spot. A search operation was initiated after the encounter and we arrested David who was injured and tried to run away but was caught after a short chase in Khobha village.” David – a native of Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra, was one of most wanted Maoists of newly formed MMC (Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh) of CPI-Maoist. Three underground militants of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) were arrested from separate locations under Champahour Police Station area in Khowai District of Tripura on July 5, reports East Mojo. The trio militants identified as Nirban Debbarma, Samarjit Debbarma and Ramakanta Debbarma were allegedly involved in extortion activities. A number of letterheads and notes belonging to the banned organisation were recovered during search operation. The NLFT was banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act-UAPA in 1997 and has been involved in violence, operating from their camps across the International Border. NLFT has been responsible for violent activities including 317 insurgency incidents in which 28 Security Forces and 62 civilians lost their lives during the period 2005-2015. Peace talks with NLFT were initiated in 2015 and there has been no violence by NLFT since 2016.

"Earlier this week [30 July], our team nabbed two accused identified as Jalal A.M. and Said Alavi for conspiring with an already arrested accused Ramees K.T. and for smuggling gold through diplomatic baggage addressed to the UAE Consulate at Thiruvananthapuram," an NIA official said on August 2. On 31 July, two more accused identified as Mohammed Shafi and Abdu P.T. were arrested after being accused of playing similar roles in the crime. "On Saturday [1 August], another two miscreants namely Muhammad Ali Ebrahim and Muhammad Ali were apprehended. The investigation revealed that these two were also a part of the conspiracy besides aiding and assisting Jalal in collecting the smuggled gold from Ramees K.T. at Thiruvananthapuram and distributing the contraband amongst other conspirators," the officer said. Muhammad Ali is also a suspected member of the Popular Front of India (PFI). The arrested cadres were identified as – Somnath Sandil (20) Mahadev Gope (19), both residents of Gudri thana area, and Santosh Kumar Murmu (35) and Pandey Honhaga (23), both residents of Sonua in the District. The SFs recovered two country-made pistols, two magazines, 10 live cartridges, two motorcycles and four cell phones from their possession. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said, “acting on the information, we put up a checking point at a strategic place in Lodhai where forces belonging to CRPF’s battalion 60 were deployed. During the raid in the evening, four bike-borne men were about to cross the checking point, but at the sight of Police and Paramilitary Forces, they started running back. On August 17, an ophthalmologist working at Bengaluru’s M S Ramaiah Medical College, Abdur Rahman, was arrested by National Investigation Agency (NIA) for alleging developing a medical application for helping the injured Islamic State (IS) terrorists in the conflict-zones and a weaponry-related application for the benefit of IS fighters, reports The Hindustan Times. In a statement issued on August 18, NIA stated that Abdur Rahman was arrested in connection with the agency’s probe against a Kashmiri couple - Jahanzaib Sami Wani and Hina Bashir Beigh, arrested from Jamia Nagar in Delhi in March 2020. NIA had already arrested ‘two more accused - Sadiya Anwar Sheikh and Nabeel Siddick Khatri from Pune for being part of the conspiracy to further the activities of ISIS/ISKP in India and to carry out subversive activities in the garb of anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests. Rahman during interrogation confessed to conspiring with accused Jahanzaib Sami and other Syria-based ISIS operatives on secure messaging platforms to further IS activities. Significantly, he had visited an ISIS medical camp in Syria in early 2014 for treatment of ISIS terrorists and stayed with Islamic State operatives for 10 days and returned to India. Following his arrest, NIA carried out searches at three premises belonging to Rahman in Bangalore with the assistance of Karnataka Police and seized digital devices, mobile phone, laptop containing incriminating material. Abdur Rahman will be produced before the NIA Special Court at New Delhi for his remand.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on August 17, arrested two accused, identified as Mohammad Baitullah and Mohammad Mukhtar, in connection with its probe into the seizure of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) in West Bengal's Bagdogra of Darjeeling District, reports newkerala.com. The Times of India adds that both were arrested from Kishanganj District in Bihar. Both arrested are residents of Kishanganj District. The official said that the case pertains to a conspiracy by a network of individuals for the production, circulation and smuggling of high-quality FICN. The NIA registered a case on March 12, 2020, based on the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seizure of FICN with a face value of INR 4.01 lakh from the accused persons. "Surveillance was mounted and these two agents located and arrested this morning after a night-long operation. Searches at their hideouts led to seizure of incriminating material and electronic evidence," the official added.

A third militant was killed and a soldier succumbed to his injuries, on August 18, taking the death toll to eight in the operation that was launched in Kreeri area in Baramulla District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in India on August 17, after a militant attack on Security Forces (SFs) in which a Policeman and two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed on the first day, reports Daily Excelsior. The operation that was put on hold on August 17 night resumed on August 18 morning and one militant was killed in a day long operation. The third slain militant has been identified as Usman of Pakistan, and his body was retrieved from the encounter site. The search operation is still on in the area to rule out presence of any other militant. Srinagar based Defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that two soldiers who had sustained injuries yesterday (August 17) at Kreeri gunfight, succumbed today (August 18) at Srinagar. He said that the number of militants killed in the two-day long operation reached three. “Two AK’s and three pistols were recovered from the site of encounter,” he said. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Rishikesh Khilari said, “a joint team of Malkangiri DVF (District Voluntary Force) and Border Security Force (BSF)’s 76th Battalion had conducted an operation at Kalimela area two days ago. During the search, the personnel recovered huge cache of ammunition from the Maoist dump. It is suspected that the dump was used for illegally manufacturing and repairing the weapons for Maoist activities.”
