Some sectarian parties on February 25 demanded the removal of Interior Minister Monuddin Haider over a February 13-statement of the latter regarding the ban on Jehad fund-raising by various terrorist outfits. Speaking at a press conference in Peshawar, Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali, Chief of the Jamaat- Ittehade-Ulema, North Western Frontier Province, said the registration of a case recently against an Urdu daily Jasarat was a deliberate attempt to divert people's attention from the real issue and demanded immediate withdrawal of the case. Among the others who made a similar demand were Haji Dost Mohammad, Maqsood Ahmed Salafi and Habibullah Shah of the Jamaat-Ahl-e-Hadees Supreme Council. The Ulema (religious scholars) held the government responsible for a number of incidents, which caused widespread resentment among the people and damaged the Islamic status of the country. They also mentioned that the Interior Minister's statement negated the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnat. They demanded a ban on cable network, music centres, cinema houses, dish antennas and all such things which, in their view, promoted vulgarity and obscenity in the society.

Tehreek-e-Jaferia Pakistan (TJP) chief Allama Sajjid Naqvi said in Peshawar, on June 10, that the Federal government should launch an operation against the various terrorist outfits. While supporting the current deweaponization campaign of the government, he added that the "present system had encouraged terrorists and not a single person had ever been hanged up till now." The TJP chief also demanded the Interior Ministry to disclose the names of the two outfits reportedly getting foreign assistance and arms. He said it was the responsibility of the government to proscribe such outfits and suspend diplomatic relations with those countries that were supporting their groups inside Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar on August 28, Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘deputy supreme commander’ Javed Qasuri said the recent crackdown on terrorist outfits has ‘exposed’ the secular approach of Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider. Qasuri opined that the move was a negation of the stand taken by Gen. Pervez Musharraf in Agra on the Kashmir issue. While observing that collection of funds for jehad was in accordance with the injunctions of Islam, he added that the decision of the Interior Minister would not be respected, as it was violates the dictates of Islam. The North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government on October 7 put the Jamaat-Ulema-e-Islam (JuI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman under house arrest for more than 12 hours to prevent him from proceeding to Multan to lead an anti-US rally. Pakistani news reports indicated that he was put under house arrest and directed not to leave his residence in his native village Abdul Khel in Dera Ismail Khan. Restrictions on his movement were later withdrawn. Commenting on his arrest, Fazlur Rehman said, "This reflects the government's nervousness. Our public meetings upset General Musharraf as these are spreading to the biggest province Punjab." The house arrest sparked unrest among his followers resulting in protest demonstrations in Peshawar. Hundreds of JuI-F activists assembled at the Madni Mosque at Namakmandhi and were addressed by party leaders. Some of the speakers indicated that the anticipated US attack would be met with retaliation and they would destroy all churches and temples in the region. They also stated, if the government banned their demonstrations on roads they would go underground and launch a massive attack against US interests. The leaders also added that if the day government allowed the US to use its territory against the Taliban, it would be the ‘last day’ of Gen. Musharraf’s regime.

He claimed that the ‘Kashmiri freedom movement’ was in its final stages and soon they would hear good news. He also alleged that the Indian prime minister was expecting that the Americans would help them in the same manner as they were doing Afghanistan.
