The Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), front organisation of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), on January 14 has declared suicide bombings un-Islamic and said those involved in killing of Muslims were playing in the hands of the US, India and Israel, according to The News. “Gun, grenade and suicide attack is no solution to any problem in Pakistan,” said JuD Central Vice-President Colonel (retd) Nazir Ahmad Chaudhry while speaking at a news conference in Peshawar. “Islam does not allow attack on a Muslim, let alone suicide attack,” he said.

A series of three powerful blasts followed by heavy gunfight in a brazen suicide mission, apparently planned to target the US Consulate in Peshawar, left eight persons dead and 18 others injured in Peshawar, the provincial capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), in the afternoon of April 5, according to The News. A suicide bomber hit one Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) parked on the entrance to the Hospital Road, which hosts the US Consulate General as well as several offices of the Pakistan Army around 1.20 pm (PST). “The first suicide bomber exploded his car near the APC at the entry point to the Hospital Road after which unknown number of attackers coming in a double cabin pick-up drove towards the gate of the US Consulate while opening fire,” Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP)-Operations Karim Khan said. The Deputy City Police Chief said another suicide bomber blew himself up hardly 20 feet away from the main gate of the US Consulate on the Hospital Road after the attackers failed to enter the building. He said the gate of the consulate was partially damaged in the blast. Those killed included two Frontier Crops officials, one Frontier Reserved Policeman and two passers-by, while three bodies could not be identified. According to SSP-Operations, around 20 kilograms of explosives were used in the first suicide attack while around 100 kilograms were used in the second one outside the main gate of the consulate. He was not sure about the nature of the third blast. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in reaction to the US drone attacks.

At least 24 people, including a child and Police officials, were killed and 49 others injured in twin bombings hours apart at a school and a crowded market in Peshawar, the provincial capital of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), on April 19, according to Daily Times. The first bomb exploded outside a school run by a Police welfare foundation in the Peshawar, killing a boy and injuring eight others. A bomb disposal squad (BDS) official said one-and-a-half kilogrammes of explosives packed in a schoolbag were used in the blast, which were detonated by a timed device. The second blast occurred at Qissa Khawani Bazaar of Peshawar when a suicide bomber walked into the crowd and detonated explosives.Capital City Police Officer Liaquat Ali said, “Just after the conclusion of a Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) demonstration against load shedding, a young suicide bomber aged 14, walked towards a Police mobile Van and detonated explosives strapped to his body”. “Twenty-three people were killed including three Police officials. At least 41 persons were injured,” Senior Police Official Imran Kishwar said. Peshawar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gulfat Hussain, JI city Naib (deputy) Ameer Dost Muhammad and JI Dir-Bajaur Qaumi Jirga (community assembly) Chairman Ghausur Rehman were among the dead. Police suspect the bomber mainly targeted DSP Hussain because he belonged to the Shia sect. JI Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (new name of NWFP) ‘secretary general’ and former Member of National Assembly (MNA) Shabir Ahmed Khan and JI Peshawar Ameer (chief) and former MNA Sabir Hussain Awan were among the injured.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Sami (JUI-S) ‘chief’ Maulana Sami ul Haq on May 3 offered to mediate between the Government and the Taliban (TTP), reports Daily Times. Addressing a press conference after administrating oath to the party’s newly-elected Peshawar District cabinet at the Peshawar Press Club, the JUI-S urged the Government to initiate dialogue with the Taliban (TTP), as military operation was not a solution to any problem. Sami said the US and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai were in favour of dialogue but the Government was hesitant and was using force that could not bring peace to the troubled region. “Despite repeated calls, the Government is unmoved and using the military option and bombing its own citizens,” he added.

The United States (US) Consul General in Peshawar Candace Putnam said on July 6 that the United States desired to see Pakistan take action against the Haqqani network, which is killing American soldiers in Afghanistan, reports Daily Times. “We very much would like to see action in North Waziristan Agency. The Haqqani network is killing our soldiers,” Putnam told a news conference before leaving her post. Elizabeth Rood will now replace her at the US Consulate General in Peshawar. However, the outgoing consul general said it was up to Pakistan to decide when they would need to take action. She stressed that extremists “have found safe havens” in North Waziristan Agency. “There is no question that extremists have found safe havens in the border areas... that is why your (Pakistani) troops are fighting in those areas. I think you recognised that reality. You have been making good progress in that battle against militants,” she said.
