Welcoming the August 20 US designation of a Pakistani madrassa (Islamic Seminary), Ganj Madrassa, officially known as Jamia Taleem-ul-Quran-Wal-Hadith Madrassa of Peshawar (provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-KP), as a terrorist organization supporting the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), al-Qaida and Taliban, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson said that India has long maintained that terror networks in Pakistan needed to be dismantled, reports The Times of India. "It merely underscores our long-held position that there exists a terrorist network and support framework in that region that needs to be targeted and dismantled," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson said.

Chairman of IK Songbijit faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-IKS), IK Songbijit, has stated that they are fighting for liberation of ‘Independent Bodoland’, reports The Sentinel. Songbijit said they have been continuing their struggle for ‘Independent Bodoland’ and they have no relation with those armed guerrilla organizations who do not have similarity with the principle and ideology of the NDFB. When asked whether they are interested for peace talk with the government of India what Ranjan Daimary, the founder ‘Chairman’ of the NDFB is doing, Songbijit questioned what could be the basis of peace talk. He said if the government of India is willing to grant ‘Independent Bodoland’ through internationally monitored referendum, then it would be possible for them to join the peace talks. On the question of massive extortions, kidnapping and killing by the NDFB-IKS in Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) region, Songbijit claimed that not a single ‘innocent’ people have been killed by the NDFB cadres. He, however, said ‘paying tax’ for the ‘cause’ of Bodoland is a ‘patriotic duty’ of the people of Bodoland

In addition, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Nasir Durrani on September 30 said a targeted operation will be conducted in Peshawar very soon, reports The News. Marketplaces and other public areas of the provincial capital would first be cleared by sniffer dogs and Bomb Disposal Units before being opened for the general public, he said, adding that approval for the measure had already been given by the KP Government. The IGP fears more attacks by the militants in the province.

The Government will press ahead with its plans to engage militants in peace negotiations, despite the wave of terrorist attacks in Peshawar, the National Security and Foreign Affairs Adviser Sartaj Aziz said on October 3, reports The Express Tribune. “Despite these incidents, the dialogue option should be pursued because the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) are divided in several groups and many of them have said they do want to pursue dialogue,” Aziz said at a joint news conference with British Senior Foreign Office Minister Baroness Sayeeda Warsi. His statement came after a series of devastating attacks over the past week during which left more than 150 persons dead in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and threatened Government efforts to seek peace with the TTP.

Lawmakers in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly on October 25 expressed much frustration over the Federal Government’s silence on talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and said the province may have to go ahead with negotiations itself, reported The Express Tribune. “We cannot let the issue of law and order linger this way and will make our own line of action if we are not satisfied with the Federal Government’s initiative,” said Information Minister Shah Farman. “We request the federal government to expedite the peace process,” said Health Minister Shaukat Yusufzai. He added KP is a major stakeholder in the peace process and is on the receiving end of law and order problems. “The Federal Government has not shared any information about what they are actually doing in this regard.” He said Prime Ministe Nawaz Sharif’s visit to America was disappointing. “We do not need American aid, what we do need is these drones to stop. The PM has disappointed the nation on the matter.”

Minister for State and Frontier Regions Lieutenant-General (retired) Abdul Qadir Baloch on October 25 said that Pakistan would not allow entry of Afghan refugees if the situation in their country deteriorated after the withdrawal of NATO forces in 2014, reported The News. “Pakistan will not welcome fresh influx of refugees from Afghanistan and use all legal channels in collaboration with the international community to block entry of Afghans on the border,” he said when asked whether Islamabad would provide shelter to fresh refugees if there was turmoil in the neighbouring country after the NATO pullout. After meeting officials of the Afghan Commissionerate and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in Peshawar the Minister told a news conference that Pakistan would utilise all options to stop Afghan refugees from crossing over the border although there was a possibility that a small number of the people from Afghanistan made their way into Pakistan. “In case Afghanistan is unstable, then the local residents will be left with no choice but to flee to Pakistan but even then, we won’t welcome them,” he said. He further stated that Pakistan cannot afford to host Afghan refugees any longer as it has spent more than USD 200 billion in the last 30 years on them, reports The Express Tribune. Baloch said international humanitarian organisations should assist in providing protection and ensure the timely and safe return of refugees to their home country. He said initially Pakistan was hosting five million refugees and even today there are more than three million registered and unregistered refugees in the country, most of whom are living in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

On the 12th day of the protest against drone strikes and NATO supply lines by the PTI and its allies, activists sent three suspected NATO containers back from Hayatabad Toll Plaza on December 5. Also the PTI chairman Imran Khan vowed to continue with demonstrations against drone strikes on December 5 as he led his party among other parliamentarians for a protest outside the Parliament in Islamabad, reported The Express Tribune. “We will continue our protest against drone strikes and…we will not allow NATO supplies to pass through the (Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa) province,” Imran Khan told the gathering.

While addressing a gathering convened to discuss the Right to Service law 2013 in Peshawar, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on December 26 made it clear that NATO supply routes would remain suspended till the unmanned airstrikes are halted, reports The Express Tribune. Imran Khan expressed concern over the Federal Government’s attitude on Chuck Hagel’s statement. Hagel had said United States (US) lawmakers could withhold military assistance if the Pakistani Government did not ensure security for NATO supply routes. Khan, however, claimed the assistance was part of the support fund as the Pakistan military was sent to fight in the tribal areas on the request of the US and they cannot stop the aid. The party chairman blamed the US for sabotaging a possible peace initiative with the Taliban. “They don’t want us to bring peace back to our region,” he said, adding, “We took a step forward and they (the US) attacked the Taliban. We are following the resolution of the Parliament whereas the Federal Government is sitting idle.” He added once peace is restored, people will want to invest in the country.
