Three suspected terrorists were killed and a police personnel of the Anti-Terrorist Force (ATF) injured in an encounter in Kalat district, Quetta, on January 6. According to official sources, a joint team of Quetta and Kalat police raided a house to arrest members of a terrorist group allegedly sponsored by Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India’s external intelligence agency. In the ensuing encounter, three suspected terrorists were killed and one police personnel injured. Police sources added that a large cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered by the ATF from the encounter site.

In defiance of the ban imposed by the government, hundreds of the defunct Tanzeem-Nafaz Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM) cadres clashed with police at Lal Qala in the Maidan area of Dir district on January 20 during protests against the proscription of the outfit. The protestors also condemned the arrest of the outfit’s leaders. "We will not accept the ban on TNSM and our activities will go on," said Fazlullah, son of TNSM chief, Maulana Sufi Muhammad. According to media reports, several police personnel were injured. No arrests have been made so far in connection with the incident.

Police in Gujranwala on March 24 arrested a Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) terrorist after an encounter while his accomplice managed to escape. Three police personnel were injured in the encounter. Police also recovered hand grenades and automatic weapons from the encounter site. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed that they were going to target a procession of the Shia community in the area. Official sources have indicated that the arrested had secured training in Afghanistan in 1994 and also took part in terrorist activity in Afghanistan and Jammu and Kashmir.

According to media reports, Lal Din alias Arif Lalu, alleged Karachi unit chief of the proscribed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), was killed in an encounter with a team of Anti-Terrorists Wing (ATW) of Sindh Police on April 4. Official sources have indicated that Lal Din, carrying Rs 1 million as head money, was killed when he resisted an arrest attempt. "He was wanted in various cases of terrorist strikes, killings and other heinous crimes," the ATW chief stated. Eye witnesses said that a passer-by was injured in the encounter. Meanwhile, a Sindh police spokesperson said that Lal Din was wanted in at least 15 murder cases including that of the elder brother of Federal Interior Minister, Moinuddin Haider and other high-profile target killings.

Riaz Basra, chief of the proscribed Sunni outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Pakistan’s most wanted sectarian terrorist, was killed along with three of his accomplices in an encounter in Mailsi on May 14. According to media reports, the encounter occurred at Dakota, Multan, which had been targeted twice in the past by defunct LeJ terrorists. Official sources claimed that Basra was in the Faisalabad police’s custody for the last five months and was being interrogated for the activities of his group. According to these sources, four heavily armed terrorists came to meet Chaudhry Fida Hussain Ghalvi, district chief of the proscribed Shia group Tehreek-e-Jaferia Pakistan (TJP). Being on the LeJ hit-list, villagers of the area reportedly used to keep a vigil and were also assisted by the police. In the ensuing encounter, Basra and three of his accomplices were killed. Chaudhry Iftikhar Ahmed, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of the Multan range, said police had also recovered a rocket-launcher, four rockets, four Kalashnikovs and a huge quantity of live rounds from the encounter site. Ghalvi, TJP district chief, claimed that the assailants had come to kill him. He added that the LeJ had killed his brother on July 23, 1997.

Security forces on May 26 reportedly foiled an attack on the Uch Gas Field Airport injuring two of the armed gunmen and arresting six persons, a senior officer of the Sui administration said on May 27. The gang reportedly opened fire at the airport and consequently the Frontier Corps (FC) retaliated. In the ensuing encounter two armed men were injured. FC personnel also arrested six persons from the area and recovered four sub-machineguns from their possession. No damage to the airport or any installation was caused, official sources said.

Four Al Qaeda terrorists and two security force (SF) personnel were killed and two police personnel injured in an encounter near Jarma bridge in Kohat, on July 3. The four Al Qaeda cadres of Chechen origin were coming from the tribal area of Miranshah, headquarters of North Waziristan Agency, near the Afghan border. According to official sources, the Al Qaeda cadres were probably on a terrorist mission in Kohat or Peshawar. SF personnel recovered four Kalashnikovs, one machine-gun, two pistols, 15 hand-grenades and a rocket launcher from the encounter site. The Al Qaeda men reportedly opened fire and lobbed five hand-grenades at the SFs from inside their vehicle. The encounter occurred at Jarma bridge when the terrorists were stopped some three kilometers south of Kohat. Two other members of the terrorist group managed to escape from the encounter site.

Six terrorists were killed in an encounter near Bahawalpur, official sources said on July 28. The encounter ensued when four assailants attacked a police party escorting terrorists, numbering four, to Khairpur Tamewali from Bahawalpur to help recover weapons. The assailants intercepted the police and managed to set free the four terrorists from police custody. However, police chased the fleeing terrorists and clashed with them, killing two of the assailants and all the four who ran away from their custody. Two of the assailants managed to escape. The four terrorists who fled from custody are among the perpetrators of the St Dominic Church massacre in Bahawalpur on October 28, 2001. As reported earlier, a police personnel and 17 Christians, including five children, were killed and nine others injured when six unidentified gunmen opened indiscriminate fire at a church in Model Town, Bahawalpur.

Four terrorists of the proscribed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), a Sunni group, were killed in the Kehror Pucca area of Lodhran district during an encounter with police, on September 8. According to a press note, police personnel were headed for Adda Zakira to make some recoveries based on disclosures made by accompanying LeJ terrorists Muhammad Akram and Muhammad Wasim. The two accused were reportedly arrested in the third week of August 2002 from Vehari district. The press note further claimed that, when the Kehror Pucca police team was near Pul Rinf Jadah, two unidentified assailants attacked them and managed to free the accused. In the ensuing encounter, four persons, including the two accompanying terrorists, were killed. However, a LeJ terrorist managed to escape. Some arms and ammunition were also recovered from the encounter-site.

Two front-ranking Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) terrorists reportedly killed themselves to avoid arrest, while a third managed to escape after an 18-hour-long encounter with Jhang police near Jamiabad, on September 29. Zafar Iqbal, one of the dead terrorists, was involved in the Bahawalpur-church massacre of October 28, 2001, in which a police personnel and 17 Christians, including five children, were killed. He was also involved in many other sectarian and terrorist incidents. According to official sources, the special anti-terrorist squad of Jhang police, on a tip-off commenced operations against the three terrorists, on September 28 afternoon. While Zafar Iqbal was arrested, the others escaped. Later his accomplices fired at the police personnel and took Zafar along with them and hid in a sugarcane field. In continued search operations on September 29, police traced the terrorists and, while attempting to evade arrest, Zafar Iqbal and Irfan reportedly shot themselves dead. A search of the car they had abandoned yielded some arms and ammunition.
