Gen. Shaukat Sultan. The army and para-military soldiers have reportedly cordoned off a 50 kilometer area and about 300 to 400 foreign and local terrorists are present at about seven targets in the Agency. According to Sultan, two terrorists, including one foreigner, were killed. Four terrorists, one of them a foreigner, were arrested while nine of them reportedly returned to their hideouts in the area. He also said that authorities have no confirmed reports about presence of high-value targets in South Waziristan. "But the presence of high-value targets in Wana cannot be ruled out because of the way the miscreants are putting up resistance," he added.

The Karachi Police is reported to have arrested six terrorists of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-alami (HuMA) outfit after a gun battle in the Kalakot area on May 24. According to the chief of Karachi Police investigation department, Fayyaz Leghari, "We have been able to break the group’s network. There may be a few more but they are on the run." Their hideout was the group’s operational headquarters and was used for "operational briefings", added Leghari. According to Daily Times, the raid was launched on a tip-off from another HuMA terrorist, Kamran Atif, who was arrested last week. Atif is alleged to have pressed the detonator that failed to blow up a remote-controlled car bomb parked on a highway where President Musharraf’s motorcade was passing in April 2002.

The pro-Taliban Sunni cleric and chief of the Binoria mosque in Karachi, Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, was killed and his son, nephew and driver were wounded, when armed men ambushed their vehicle in front of the mosque on May 30. The assassination, suspected to be a sectarian attack, led to violence across Karachi and according to The News, dozens of people, including police and paramilitary personnel, were injured. Police sources were quoted as saying that one of the assassins was injured in retaliatory fire by Shamzai’s police guard, but his accomplices took him away. The murder reportedly triggered violence in several localities of Karachi, including Jamshed Quarters, Soldier Bazaar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Sohrab Goth, Quaidabad and North Karachi. Provincial security adviser Aftab Sheikh was quoted in Daily Times as having said that "It was a targeted killing and according to our information about 10 to 12 people were involved." Mufti Nizamuddin, according to The Nation, is the third head of the Binoria mosque to have been assassinated. Earlier, Mufti Habibullah was shot dead in 1998 and Allama Yusuf Ludhianvi in year 2000.
