At least 27 militants were killed in two days of clashes in South Waziristan, a military official told AFP on January 2, The Post reported. The clashes broke out after pro-Taliban militants abducted four Pakistan soldiers in South Waziristan on January 1, the official said. "Five militants were killed yesterday and 22 overnight," he stated. The official disclosed that the abducted soldiers were delivering food rations from one post to another when militants seized them. Their fate was not immediately known. Both sides used heavy weaponry in the clashes that went on through the night, resulting in the death of 22 militants with no loss of life on the army side, he claimed.

According to The News, kidnappers freed more than 250 students and teachers unharmed after being given safe passage by the authorities on January 28 from a school in the Bannu district of NWFP where they were holding the hostages. Though the government insisted that the kidnappers were a gang of criminals, reports indicated that some of them were suspected militants. One of the kidnappers, Gul Jamil, who was killed in the shoot-out with police, was stated to be a militant belonging to the Karak district. Groups of militants have reportedly been active in recent months in both the Karak and Bannu districts. They have been blamed for some of the kidnappings in the two districts. About eight militants, who had abducted a senior health official, Dr Hussain Jan, and his driver in Karak, took the children and teachers hostage in the high school of Walizar Kallay in the Domel area of Bannu, Dawn reported. One of the kidnappers was killed during an exchange of fire with police. The militants released the kidnapped men and entered the school. They held the students and teachers at gunpoint to avert a police action. Sources said that local elders, including former legislators Qari Gul Azeem and Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz, held negotiations with the militants for the release of the students and teachers. The six-hour standoff ended when the elders persuaded police officers to avoid an armed action and provide safe passage to the gunmen. "They (hostage-takers) were armed with dynamite, hand-grenades, Kalashnikov rifles and other explosive material," Aziz told AFP. He added that "During negotiations they repeatedly warned they would kill the children and blow up themselves if they were not allowed safe passage."

"He is missing and we believe that he has been kidnapped," a security official said. A political administration official in Jamrud confirmed the incident, but said that the administration had no prior information about his visit. "We had no prior information of his travel. The ambassador would never inform us whenever he travelled to or from Afghanistan," said deputy administrator of Landi Kotal Ahmad Khan Orakzai. Officials said they had blocked the highway, set up check-posts and started searching for the Ambassador. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and the Ambassador’s cell-phone was reportedly not responding.

The Taliban on February 12 claimed responsibility for the abduction of Pakistani Ambassador to Afghanistan, Tariq Azizuddin, and said they would release him in return for the arrested Taliban commander Mullah Mansoor Dadullah, Daily Times quoted Geo Television as saying. Azizuddin had gone missing on his way from Peshawar to the Torkham border crossing on February 11 when he lost contact with authorities in the Khyber Agency. Dadullah was arrested in Quetta on the same day. Geo Television quoted the bureau chief of an Arab television channel as saying that the local Taliban had asked tribal elders to convey their message to the Pakistani government. "We have heard this news on TV channels… However, we have not received any formal information to this effect," Interior Ministry spokesman Brig (r) Javed Iqbal Cheema told reporters. Cheema also said the government did not know who had abducted Azizuddin or what had happened to him. Asked if the government would trade Dadullah for Azizuddin, Cheema replied, "I cannot say anything."

Four militants and a villager were killed in a gun-battle which erupted in the Khankhel area of Lakki Marwat district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on March 4 after the abduction of a union council official and his two associates. Two of the militants were Uzbek nationals while the rest were tribal Wazirs, District Police Officer Romail Akram told Dawn, adding that an Uzbek militant had been arrested. Bakhmal Union Council official Malik Mohammad Idrees Khan and associates Musawwir Gul and Hayatullah were coming to Serai Gambila when five armed militants intercepted their car near Manzar Faqeer area and abducted them, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Umar Faraz Khattak. A heavy contingent of police and Frontier Constabulary personnel were subsequently sent to the area to ensure that the abducted people were not taken to the tribal belt. Armed volunteers, sources said, surrounded the militants at a place near Khankhel, held talks with them and got the three persons freed. However, the villagers refused the militants’ demand for a safe passage and in the ensuing encounter, five persons were killed.

A man and a woman were stoned to death by militants in the Khwezai-Baezai area of Mohmand Agency in the FATA on March 31 after a ‘qazi court’ (Islamic court) found them guilty of adultery, Dawn reported. This is the first incident of Rajam (stoning to death) carried out in FATA. Earlier, couples found guilty of adultery by militants or tribesmen were executed by firing squads. The woman, identified as Shano from Mohmand Agency, had allegedly eloped with Daulat Khan Malikdeenkhel of Bara on March 15. Dr Asad, a spokesman for the militants, told Dawn that Shano was a married woman living in Peshawar’s Deen Bahar colony. He said a complaint had been received from her family that she had been abducted by Daulat Khan. But later it was reported that she had eloped with him. He stated that some members of the Taliban captured them in Nowshera when they were returning from Karachi. He said the qazi found the couple guilty of adultery and sentenced them to death by stoning and the sentence was carried out in Khwaezai-Baezai, about 40-kms west of the Mohmand Agency’s headquarters Ghalanai.

Militants released Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Tariq Azizuddin, on May 16-night after holding him in captivity for 97 days, Dawn reported on May 18. His release came after protracted negotiations between the Government and militant leader Baitullah Mehsud, with tribal leaders acting as mediators. Azizuddin was reportedly handed over to the military authorities in Razmak in North Waziristan, from where he was flown to the Army’s brigade headquarters at Zari Noor for debriefing. Azizuddin had been abducted from the Khyber Agency on February 11 while on his way to Kabul. "He was not kept in Khyber for a single day. He was first shifted to Orakzai and after 15 to 20 days, taken to South Waziristan. The kidnappers drove him through Spinwam and Mirali, in North Waziristan," an unnamed official said. Azizuddin’s last stay before his release was reportedly in Shaktoi, a small town in the Mehsud-dominated part of South Waziristan. "The first couple of days were hard on him. But later his captors treated him well," the official added. The official claimed that Azizuddin’s captors released him as a goodwill gesture following the prisoners’ swap between the militants and the authorities and the military pullout from the Mehsud part of South Waziristan. "There has been no ransom paid and no special prisoner exchange in this case," he said. Some sources, however, claimed that the Government had not only paid $2.5 million for his release, but also agreed to release three associates of the detained Taliban commander Mansoor Dadullah.

The two-minute video had been recorded inside a room and no other person was visible except the two Chinese. Muffled voices of a girl and a woman could also be heard in the background, denoting that the two hostages were being kept in a house somewhere. The two Chinese had no visible injuries. As reported earlier, the two Chinese telecommunication engineers were abducted on August 29 from the Khaal area of Dir district where they were repairing a telecommunication tower. Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and said the Taliban would continue targeting government installations and kidnapping people unless the government halted military operations in Swat.
