Two US choppers, carrying American troops, reportedly intruded into the Pakistani tribal territory and landed at the Bange Dar village of North Waziristan Agency (NWA), bordering the Khost province in Afghanistan, and abducted three nomads in the night of January 5. However, Government officials and security authorities based in Miranshah denied violation of Pakistan’s airspace by the coalition forces. “We have our troops deployed along the border with Afghanistan but none of them reported any such violation by the foreign forces,” a military officer said. Major General Athar Abbas, Director-General of the Inter-Services Public Relations, denied reports about violation of Pakistan’s airspace by the US choppers. “No, I don’t have any kind of such report. I am in touch with senior military officials but none of them talked about this issue, which I am sure would not have taken place,” explained Abbas.

A top United Nations (UN) official was kidnapped and his driver was killed after his vehicle was ambushed in Quetta, capital of Balochistan, on February 2, Dawn reported. John Solecki, head of the UN High Commission for Refugees office in Quetta, was going to office from his nearby residence in the Chaman Housing Society when the gunmen in a car opened fire on his vehicle. Even as the driver was seriously wounded as their vehicle crashed into a wall, the gunmen abducted Solecki, who is an American national, at gunpoint. The UN official was reportedly without a police escort. The driver, Syed Hashim Hazara, later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Police said no group had claimed responsibility and there were no clues to the identity of the kidnappers. The Deputy Inspector General of Balochistan Police, Wazir Khan Nasir, said it was “too early to say who might be involved” in the abduction, but said authorities had extended adequate security to UN agencies in the area. Another Police official said: “We cannot rule out that Islamist militants were involved given their activities all over the country, especially in the northwest… But it is difficult to say which group may have been involved in the incident because there are many groups as well as the Taliban that are operating in the country.”

The Government has accepted the demands of the Balochistan Liberation United Front (BLUF) in exchange for the recovery of John Solecki, head of the United Nations refugee agency in Quetta, Daily Times reported. However, no confirmation was made at the official level about the acceptance of the demands, a private TV channel quoted its sources as saying on March 5. According to the channel, seven of the 141 missing women had been identified and a high-powered committee would submit a report in a few days. Separately, according to another news channel, the Balochistan Government said in a statement that the list of 1,109 alleged missing persons provided by the BLUF was being ‘intensively’ scrutinised. According to the statement, 45 persons had already been traced, a few of whom were at their houses while a few were in judicial custody for their alleged involvement in criminal cases. The Balochistan Chief Minister Aslam Raisani has reportedly announced a top-level committee to investigate the captors’ demands. "We have set up a high-level committee, including high-ranking officials and politicians, to locate the whereabouts of the alleged missing persons listed by the Balochistan Liberation United Front," the provincial Government said in a statement, AFP reported. The Balochistan Home Secretary will work as secretary of the committee. The committee, headed by the Balochistan chief minister, invited the female members of the provincial assembly to assist in identifying and locating the allegedly missing women in the province, the statement said. Solecki was abducted at gunpoint from Quetta while traveling to work on February 2. His driver was killed during the abduction.

The Security Forces (SFs) killed more than 140 Taliban militants as the military operation continued in the Swat valley of NWFP on May 8, Daily Times reported. 13 of them were killed in a major gun battle at Matta Police station. Seven soldiers were also killed as the SFs took control of Khawazakhela and Chamtalai, ISPR Director General Maj Gen Athar Abbas said in a media briefing. He said military had launched a “full-scale operation” in Swat and the Taliban militants were on the run. He said the Taliban militants were trying to block an exodus of civilians through coercion, taking hostages, bombings and blocking roads with trees. According to Reuters, he said there were 4,000 to 5,000 Taliban militants in Swat, including Uzbeks and Tajiks. On May 8, troops targeted Taliban mountaintop training camps, ammunition dumps and command and communication centres in precision strikes. “Special care has been taken to strike identified targets and those targets which are away from populated areas,” he added. 10 Taliban militants were killed in attacks in Takhtaband, Qambar Top and the house of a local lawyer. Another 10 were killed in an attack by helicopter gunship in Kabal. Five Taliban militants, including Commander Akbar Ali were killed in Kanju. The ISPR Director General said the Taliban militants killed the brother of Khawazakhela union council nazim and abducted two Policemen from Sor Bridge in Khawazakhela. They also fired six rockets at the Circuit House in Mingora, killing a soldier. The ISPR said the Taliban resistance in Buner had been reduced considerably, but they were maintaining positions at Sultanwas and Pir Baba.
