The Chakwal police said on January 16 that they had arrested a suicide bomber and seized eight kilograms of explosive material and other bomb devices from him, according to Daily Times. Chakwal District Police Officer Maqsood Khan told a press conference that police raided a house in the Thoha Mehram Khan village and arrested Abdul Ghafoor. "Ghafoor has confessed to have had a plan to kill former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and Chakwal District Nazim Sardar Ghulam Abbas at a public meeting that was to be held in Talagang," Khan said, adding that the meeting had been postponed in the wake of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s killing in Rawalpindi. Khan also stated that Ghafoor and his associates were now planning to attack Muharram processions in Chakwal and Talagang. He said 23-year-old Ghafoor was a member of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM). "He also has links with the terrorist group that attacked a Pakistan Air Force bus in Sargodha last year," the officer said.

Militants have vacated the areas of Manja, Totanoo Bandai, Shah Dheri in Kabal tehsil and Puchar, Namal, Sardan Top and Shor in Matta tehsil, which were strongholds of Fazlullah, sources added. The troops imposed a curfew during their forward march in the areas from 7pm on January 18-night and no one was allowed to come out of their houses. The security forces, during the operation, destroyed the houses of local militant commanders Sayed Karim, Lajbar Khan, Sahib and Bin Yamin, a close aide of rebel cleric Maulana Fazlullah. Daily Times reports that law enforcement agencies claimed late on September 15 to have detained three suspected terrorists and recovered 1,000 kilogrammes of explosives in a raid on a Baloch settlement in the outskirts of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. According to government sources, a joint raid was conducted in the New Kahan locality of Quetta, which is populated by the Marri Baloch tribesmen. During the raid, three suspected terrorists allegedly opened fire on the forces, which continued for an hour. The law enforcement agencies managed to overpower the three terrorists and took them into custody. The officials said they had also seized around 1,000 kg of explosives from a vehicle parked in the area. New Kahan is a settlement of the Marri tribesmen who had gone along with their tribal chief Nawab Khair Baksh Marri to Afghanistan in the 1980s. On their return from Afghanistan, they were provided shelter in New Kahan where they live amid scant civic amenities.

One of them targeted the Marriott Hotel on September 20, while whereabouts of the other two are not known. The Frontier Corps (FC) said on November 16 that it killed one terrorist and injured three others in the Awaran district after they opened fire on a convoy of the visiting commandant of the Kalat Scouts, according to Daily Times. The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attempted ambush, and a former chairman of the Baloch Students’ Organization (BSO) has been named in a case registered by police. The convoy of Colonel Khalilur Rehman of Kalat Scouts was visiting Mashky area – where an FC team was ambushed on November 14 – and was returning to Khuzdar when it came under attack around 9am in Jabri area, 40 kilometers north-west of Mashky sub-division. “The attack was carried out from a white van with the licence number plate QAF-257,” FC spokesman Shahid Mahmmod Khan said, adding that troops retaliated by firing in the direction of the van, killing Noor Mohammad and injuring three others, who are now in FC custody. The FC official added that they seized hand grenades and other weapons. The BLA is reported to have claimed responsibility for the attack. Spokesman Bibarg Baloch told Daily Times that the Pakistan Army had launched a new search operation in the Mand and Mashky areas of Balochistan, which had resulted in the arrest of several ‘innocent people’. He said the attack on the FC had been launched in ‘self-defence’ against the operation. “We have killed seven army personnel in a fight,” claimed the BLA spokesman, and said that two other soldiers were killed after a rocket was fired on their convoy.

The ISPR-run Swat Media Centre (SMC) said Security Forces (SFs) launched a ground assault against the militants in Shakardarra, the stronghold of Maulana Fazlullah-led militants. It said SFs started a search-and-cordon operation early in the morning, backed by gunship helicopters, and killed 15 militants, besides injuring scores others, and destroyed their command and control centres. According to a SMC press release, the troops were advancing in a calculated way with a view to avoiding civilian casualties. However, the press release claimed that fleeing militants were using local population as human shield and were firing at the advancing SFs, but the troops were exercising restraint. The SFs also conceded casualties of two soldiers besides injuries to an equal number of SF personnel.

According to Dawn, three women and a boy of a family were killed and six persons, including four women, were injured when a rocket hit a house in Darra Adamkhel in the NWFP on December 31.
