Security Forces on January 21 arrested dozens of suspects in a search launched in the aftermath of the Charsadda university attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), reports Daily Times. Search operations in Charsadda are ongoing as Police comb the area around the University. Several suspects have been arrested. During initial investigations, four grenades, 16 magazines and 240 cartridges were recovered from the site of the attack. Several schools were closed last weekend after intelligence suggested militants were planning an attack, according to Muhammad Amir Rana, director of the private Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies. A KP Government spokesman said they were closed as part of a security drill.

The local administration along with tribal elders on January 30 demolished 12 houses of suspected militants during a search operation in the Haleemzai tehsil (revenue unit) of Mohmand Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Dawn. Political naib tehsildar Mehmood Shah said that the local administration conducted the operation in Ghalanai Mian Gan, Adin Khel and other villages of the tehsil. The militants, whose houses were demolished, were identified as Sheraz, Mohammad Shah, Haroon, Aziz, Adnan, Ziarat Shah, Sazono, Ibrahim, Yasir, Akhtar Ali, Khatir and Subhan. Earlier, the local administration had handed over a list of 22 wanted militants to the Haleemzai elders to demolish their houses. An official statement said the administration conducted the operation with the help of Haleemzai elders.

The Sindh Police killed 12 terrorists, belonging to al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), in two separate encounters in Pipri area and Gadap Town of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on February 22, reports The News. In the first encounter, at least eight militants were killed in Pipri area of Bin Qasim Town. "Eight militants were killed on the spot while four others, who fled the scene, were killed in Gadap area," said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwaar of Malir District. In the second encounter, at least four militants were killed in Gadap Town. He further said that the encounters, which lasted several hours in a slum off the National Highway, occurred during a raid on a hideout after police received intelligence-based information that terrorists belonging to banned outfits had gathered there. The terrorists had been working jointly and targeting law enforcement agencies in Karachi, Rao added. Five of the deceased suspects were identified as Sohail, Khalil, Bilal,Talha and Abdul Salam. During the search operation the Police they found four pressure cooker bombs, suicide jackets, detonating cords, five hand grenades, ball bearings, five submachine guns, three 9mm pistols and hundreds of bullets.

The raid turned into an exchange of gunfire. “The armed men in the hideouts attacked the Rangers team when they were taking positions following a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in the area; more forces were called in to join the operation and after an exchange of gunfire three terrorists were killed. Police retaliated by firing upon the suspects as well, killing two of them. The killed suspects were yet to be identified. In a separate encounter, Police killed one Lyari Gangster, Allah Bakhsh alias Chachu, in Lyari Town area. The Punjab Police carried out 402 combing operations during the last three days all over the province and arrested 443 suspects, besides 76 proclaimed offenders, reports Dawn. Most of the arrests were made in Faisalabad, Kasur, Lahore, Chinot, Bhakar, Nankana Sahib and Hafizabad. A Senior Police Officer privy to the information said that the combing operations had been launched in all the Districts of the province on the basis of the information from the Police sources about the presence of suspects and criminals. He said the operations were enhanced in the wake of Eidul Azha. “The Punjab Police checked 13,230 people in 402 combing operations during last three days and arrested 443 suspects”, the Police official said adding that the raiding teams also managed to arrest 76 proclaimed offenders wanted in many heinous crimes. During raids, the Police also recovered 139 illegal weapons from the custody of the arrested criminals, he said. Of the total, he said, Faisalabad police arrested 98 suspects and three POs in 46 combing operations carried out in various parts of the District.

According to the police sources, the two arrested suspects were said to be involved in the murder of a police officer and are affiliated to a militant group headed by Raheem Swati, who is the prime suspect in the murder case of renowned social worker Parveen Rehman.
