The Muttahida Quami Movement - Altaf (MQM-A) in a statement released from Karachi, on June 3 has opposed the current illegal arms recovery operation launched by the Interior Ministry. According to the statement, the proposed campaign of recovery of weapons was "a plan for bloodshed in Karachi." It also said ‘operation cleanup’ launched in June 1992 was transformed into a crackdown on the party in which many MQM-A activists were either killed or arrested. Expressing concern, the statement added that the proposed de-weaponisation plan would also be like the 1992-operation and urged the Interior Ministry to commence the campaign from the Punjab "if they were sincere in the recovery of illegal arms."

Pakistani media reported that four persons were killed and several others including police personnel injured during protest demonstrations in Karachi on September 21. These protests were organised against the US-Pakistan alliance which proposes to initiate military action against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan unless the latter hands over Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect in the September 11 terrorist attacks in US. Official sources have indicated that the killings occurred when protest demonstrations turned violent in Gulzar-e-Hijri, Mauripur and the Airport police precincts. Paramilitary troops and private security guards resorted to teargas shelling and firing at the attacking mobs. These sources also added that more than 100 persons have been arrested in connection with the violence.

Central Secretary General of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Syed Munawwar Hasan on September 22, appealed to the armed forces to make President General Pervez Musharraf withdraw his ‘unilateral and pro-US’. Addressing a rally, organised by JI women wing in Karachi to protest against the government's decision of extending co-operation to the US against Afghanistan and to express solidarity with the Afghans, he said that the nation was not ready to recognise General Musharraf as the country's army chief and the armed forces should take notice of his decision of supporting the US. The JI leader said that Parvez Musharraf, who had already assumed his office by force, was going to make a deal on national interests but the government must know that the nation would never fight against a Muslim country. "The nation does not recognise Musharraf as the military chief and will never allow him to buy it slavery of America against a few dollars," he added.

A Jirga (Council) of tribal elders, religious scholars and intellectuals belonging to different parts of Baluchistan have decided to retaliate in case of US strikes against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. This was decided at the tribal Jirga, presided over by Central Secretary General of the Fazlur Rahman faction of Jamaat-ulema-e-Islam (JuI-F) Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri in Quetta on September 28. Speakers at the meeting observed that any attack on Afghanistan would be considered as an aggression on Baluchistan. They also said that the US administration had failed to provide any evidence on the link between Osama bin Laden and the September 11 terrorist attacks in United States. They also alleged that the US wanted to ‘uproot’ the Taliban government.

The North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government on October 7 put the Jamaat-Ulema-e-Islam (JuI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman under house arrest for more than 12 hours to prevent him from proceeding to Multan to lead an anti-US rally. Pakistani news reports indicated that he was put under house arrest and directed not to leave his residence in his native village Abdul Khel in Dera Ismail Khan. Restrictions on his movement were later withdrawn. Commenting on his arrest, Fazlur Rehman said, "This reflects the government's nervousness. Our public meetings upset General Musharraf as these are spreading to the biggest province Punjab." The house arrest sparked unrest among his followers resulting in protest demonstrations in Peshawar. Hundreds of JuI-F activists assembled at the Madni Mosque at Namakmandhi and were addressed by party leaders. Some of the speakers indicated that the anticipated US attack would be met with retaliation and they would destroy all churches and temples in the region. They also stated, if the government banned their demonstrations on roads they would go underground and launch a massive attack against US interests. The leaders also added that if the day government allowed the US to use its territory against the Taliban, it would be the ‘last day’ of Gen. Musharraf’s regime.

According to Pakistani media reports, Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) activists while criticising the government decision of extending support to the US-led air attacks on the terrorist training camps in Afghanistan, have indicated that they would fight alongside the Taliban. At a protest rally in Peshawar on October 11, SSP provincial chief Maulana Fazal Ahad opined that the US should withdraw from Afghanistan, failing which it would "taste fatal upset just like former Soviet Union during Afghan Jihad." Ahad said the US should provide ‘concrete evidence’ on the involvement of Al-Qaeda in the September 11 terrorist attacks in the USA. He also asked the cadres to enlist their names with the SSP high command for waging Jehad against ‘infidel forces’ and reiterated that the outfit would fight with the Taliban side by side after getting an approval from SSP central chief Mohammad Azam Tariq.
