The caretaker Prime Minister (PM) Anwaarul Haq Kakar on January 11 said militants had decided to fight against the State and therefore, the State had no choice but to fight that war with wisdom and courage, reports Dawn. “This is their [militants’] own choice to become suicide bombers and assassins, so they don’t deserve sympathy,” PM Kakar said during a Police darbar at the Governor’s House in Peshawar. PM Kakar said the nation never forgot the 2014 massacre of children at Peshawar’s Army Public School, so militants had lost the “sympathy they used to enjoy 20 years ago.” The State would fight against all those people, who subscribed to militant ideology, adds PM Kakar.

The Army said on February 8 that 51 terrorist attacks took place in the lead-up to the general elections, aimed at disrupting the polling process, reports The Nation. “Despite 51 cowardly terrorist attacks, mostly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, aimed at disrupting the electoral process, the soldiers remained resolute and effectively ensured peace and security across Pakistan,” the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. As many as 12 people — including 10 personnel of Security Forces and law enforcement agencies — embraced martyrdom, and 39 others have been injured in these attacks, ISPR added. In Balochistan, the general elections saw a significant disruption, characterized by a series of armed attacks on polling stations, a marked public rejection of the electoral process, and notably low voter turnout was also reported. The coastal regions, including Gwadar, Jiwani, and Pasni, also witnessed bombings near polling stations. Notably, in Gwadar, 14 explosions occurred near polling stations and the vehicle of the Assistant Commissioner, injuring two officials. Despite the Information Minister’s assurances of security, the election lead-up saw over 125 incidents targeting the election campaigns, with Baloch Raji Aajoi Sangar (BRAS), a coalition of ‘pro-independence’ Baloch insurgent groups, claiming responsibility for 112 attacks in just ten days before the election day.

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on March 20 stated that Pakistan will not tolerate any more cross-border terror attacks on its soil, reports ARY News. Chairing the Federal Cabinet meeting in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz Sharif said security of the geographical frontiers of Pakistan is a redline. Pakistan desires to have cordial relations with the neighbouring fraternal countries to promote trade and economic relations. However, it is not acceptable that the land of the neighbouring country is used for terrorism in Pakistan, he added. Shehbaz Sharif proposed the formulation of a joint strategy with the sincerity of purpose to defeat the scourge of terrorism. He said collective efforts against terrorism will help establish peace in the region and address other issues such as that of poverty.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) on March 21 released a detailed statement regarding what it calls the fourth phase of “Operation Zir Pahazag,” carried out by its elite unit, the Majeed Brigade, against Pakistani intelligence facilities in Gwadar on March 20, reports The Balochistan Post. According to the BLA, the operation targeted the headquarters of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI), allegedly resulting in over 25 deaths among various branches of the Security Forces (SFs). The BLA statement said “six personnel, including two commissioned officers of Pakistani military intelligence, eight personnel of ISI and 12 personnel of Pakistani navy and military were eliminated in the attack. Eight fidayeen of BLA Majeed Brigade fought valiantly and made the ultimate sacrifices during today’s attack.” The BLA spokesperson, Jeeyand Baloch, said that the attack, near Marine Drive in Gwadar, involved several hours of heavy combat, including engagement with Pakistani navy commandos and the neutralization of multiple members of Pakistani death squads. Earlier, different media sources quoting Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement reported that two SF personnel and eight terrorists were killed in the attack.

The Defense Minister Khawaja Asif on March 23 stated that his country does not desire an armed conflict with Afghanistan, following Islamabad’s airstrikes on alleged terrorist hideouts across the border, reports Pakistan Today. In an interview with Voice of America (VoA), Asif emphasized, “Force is the last resort. We do not want to have an armed conflict with Afghanistan.” He cautioned that Pakistan could block the corridor it provides to landlocked Afghanistan for trade with India if Kabul fails to curb anti-Pakistan terrorists operating on Afghan soil, questioning the rationale behind providing this corridor if Afghanistan treats Pakistan as an enemy. Asif highlighted the surge in terror attacks in Pakistan since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021. He noted that a message needed to be sent that cross-border terrorism has become intolerable. He expressed Pakistan’s desire to convey to the de facto rulers in Kabul that the current situation is untenable. Regarding Pakistan’s interactions with the Taliban, the Defence Minister stated that during a visit to Kabul in February 2023, he advised Taliban Ministers to not let past “favours” from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) tie Kabul’s hands. He warned, “If they [TTP] can harm us, then we’ll be forced to [retaliate].” Asif expressed hope that Afghanistan would meet the “single demand” of reining in the TTP, thereby preventing the need for future military strikes from Pakistan.

In a recent statement, Shahin Baloch, a ‘leader’ of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) accused Pakistan of forcibly integrating Balochistan into the country under the guise of Islam, The Balochistan Post reported on April 23. Despite 74 years passing, Balochistan continues to be deprived of all basic amenities. Shahin Baloch claimed that after seizing all resources of Balochistan, the rulers in Islamabad are callously enriching themselves while Balochistan languishes in poverty. Recent torrential rains have devastated various parts of Balochistan, with floods causing extensive damage and claiming numerous lives. However, the aid intended for the flood victims has yet to reach them, neither from Islamabad nor from the provincial authorities, TTP leader said.
