The cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) shot dead a tribal man after branding him a ‘Police informer’ at Burdamaha village of Latingia panchayat (village level local self-government institution) under K. Nuagaon tehsil (revenue unit) in Kandhamal District of Odisha on January 2, reports The New Indian Express. The deceased has been identified as Ranjan Digal, a resident of Mardudi village within Baliguda Police Station limits in the District. As per the sources, a group of about 8 to 12 armed Maoists reached the village in late hours of the night and broke into his house and dragged Ranjan out. The Maoists took him to a local school and shot him dead. The Maoists also left posters near his body in which the Kandhamal-Kalahandi-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of the CPI-Maoist claimed responsibility of the killing. The posters also said that Ranjan was killed as he worked as ‘Police informer’.

The cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) killed a civilian identified as Phulsingh Darro (45) after accusing him of being a ‘Police informer’ in Brehbeda village in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on January 3, reports The Week. According to a Police official, "Maoists came to Phulsingh Darro's house and asked him to accompany them for some work. In a forest nearby, they first hit him with sticks and then strangled him. Preliminary information is that Maoists believed he was a ‘police informer’. Investigation into the incident is underway". The Official also added that the incident came to light after relatives of the victim brought the corpse to Chhote Dongar Police Station in the District on the following day.

A tribal family of Katuapadar village under Mathili Block (administrative unit) in Malkangiri District of Odisha, left their home on January 14, to save their lives after cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) assaulted one of the family members on January 12, reports The Pioneer. According to the report, Ganga Madi, a resident of the village had been assaulted by a group of Maoists on suspicion of being a ‘police informer’. The rebels conducted a ‘Praja Court’ (people’s court, organized by the Maoists) and thrashed Ganga brutally. They also threatened him of dire consequences if he does not leave the village along with his family. Fearing further attack, Ganga along with his family abandoned the village.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed two civilians after branding them as ‘police informers’ in separate incidents in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on February 28, reports Amar Ujala. In one incident, armed Maoists arrived at the residence of Muchaki Hidma in Kolomkonta village under Tongpal Police Station limits in the District and strangled him to death. A Police Official said that the Maoists also assaulted Hidma's wife after executing the incident. In another incident, Maoists reached the house of Madvi Urra in Mukram village under Chintalnar Police Station limits and took him along to a nearby forest and subsequently killed him with a sharp weapon. As per the Police Officials, both Hidma and Urra were former Maoists and served their sentences in jail.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a former Maoist who was working as a ‘police informer’, in a forested area near Palem village under Kukananr Police Station limits in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on March 3, reports The Pioneer. According to a senior Police Officer, the deceased, identified as Hunga Kawasi, had surrendered in 2019 and was working as ‘Gopaniya Sainik’ (secret troop) to provide information to Police and assisting them in counter-insurgency operations. The Maoists had abducted him from a fair at Palem, located around 400 kilometers away from the State capital Raipur and took him to a nearby forest where they killed him with sharp weapons and left his body lying in a pool of blood.

As per the report, the Maoists dragged Mahto from his house and produced him in the Kangaroo court held inside the forest and assaulted him alleging that he was a ‘police informer’.Further, the Maoists warned him of dire consequences if he cooperates with the Police and pass any information about them, and also ordered Mahto to move out of his home and village.

In one incident, Maoists killed four civilians on suspicion of being ‘Police informers’, in Gangaloor region of Bijapur District in Chhattisgarh on September 4, reports The Times of India. According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sunderaj Patilingam, “the deceased were identified as Punem Sannu, Gore Sannu and Aaytu, natives of Pusnar village and Bhusku from Metapal village. They called the villagers, who were supporting the construction work and killed four of them.” The incident took place in forests during a ‘jan adalat’ (People’s/Kangaroo court of Maoists) where the rebels branded the four villagers as ‘Police informers’ and sentenced them to death, the IGP said adding that there were 20 villagers called inside forest who were in support of development activities in the region. All of them were beaten up while 16 of them were released and four asked to wait. The villagers later spotted bodies of four persons killed with sharp-edged weapon and reported to Police.
