Two unidentified National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants opened fire and threw hand grenades on civilians at Azarguri under Jamuguri Police Station in the Sonitpur District on March 1, according to Assam Tribune. However, no causality was reported. The duo had earlier gone to collect money from one Bhuban Acharyya of Morisuti around 9 am (IST) on February 27 but were caught and assaulted by the locals. In retaliation to the assault, they returned in the night of March 1 and attacked the civilians.

Two sons of the manager of Monmohinipur tea estate under Dhekiajuli Police Station in the Sonitpur District were abducted by suspected militants of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) on March 3, according to Telegraph. Barun (9) and Karan (12), sons of garden manager Pamminder Sehra, were on their way to the Army School at Missamari, 10 kilometres from the tea estate, when the abductors waylaid their car at around 6.30 am (IST). The Dhekiajuli Police declined to comment on whether there was any demand for ransom from any militant outfit. However, sources in the tea industry said the NDFB had asked Monmohinipur tea estate authorities to pay INR Two million in ransom.

On March 5, over 1000 former militants ransacked the headquarters of the Special Branch (SB) of the Assam Police at Kahilipara in Guwahati alleging that they had been short-changed in regard to recruitment as Special Police Officers (SPOs), reports Telegraph. The former militants belonging to the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) outfits, among others, were called to join duty as SPOs, but they were agitated after coming to know that the appointments were made only for a month at a fixed pay of INR 3000. They alleged that the Assam Police officers had earlier told them that the appointments would be for a minimum of three years. The agitated former militants subsequently ransacked the SB office.

According to Telegraph, suspected Black Widow (BW) militants killed the parents of two of their former cadres, Gale Dimasa and Manjit Phonglo, in two separate incidents in the North Cachar Hills District on March 6. Both Gale and Manjit had reportedly deserted the outfit a week earlier. The first incident was reported at Jaramdisa Thaijuary under Doyangmukh Police Station where the BW cadres attacked the residence of Gale Dimasa and shot his parent dead. The second incident occurred in Prasadindik under Maibong Police Station where militants attacked the residence of Manjit and killed his parents.

According to sources, using the KLO letterhead and signing with its self styled ‘commander’ as S. Barman, a huge number of demand notes was served to many businessmen and servicemen residing in the village of Kanur Bish Khowa, Ratiadaha, Lakhimari and Rakhapat under Golokganj Police Station. In addition, one Raju Borua, mentioning himself as ‘deputy chief’ of the ULFA and using a cell phone bearing Bangladeshi No.– 008801190856310, demanded money from some businessmen residing at villages in the Dhubri District along the Assam-West Bengal border. According to Assam Tribune, one person died while at least nine others sustained injuries when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in the Jyotikuchi area under Gorchuk Police Station of Guwahati city in the Kamrup District on March 31. The blast occurred two kilometers away from Lalmati area, where the Union External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukerjee was supposed to address a public gathering as a part of ruling Congress party’s election campaign. Senior Superintendent of Police P. C. Saloi said, “From the prima facie evidence, it appears to be the handiwork of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA)”.
