Five cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a woman, surrendered in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 4, reports Outlook. The surrendered cadres included Gangualias Lakhan Kuhdam (38), ‘commander’ of ‘Bhairamgarh area committee’ of CPI-Maoist, who was wanted in at least 21 cases in Dantewada and neighbouring Bijapur District. Another surrendered Maoist – Laxmi alias Sanni Oyam (38), was the ‘commander’ in the same ‘Bhairamgarh area committee’ unit and allegedly involved in at least nine incidents of violence, including a landmine blast in 2004 in Jangla area of Bijapur. Both of them carried rewards of INR 500,000 each on their heads. The other surrendered cadres – Hemla Bandi (28), Kosa Madkam (23) and Madvi Hidma (18) – were lower-rung cadres. All of them were disappointed with the “hollow Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] ideology” and surrendered themselves under “Lon Varratu” (return to your home) campaign of the District Police.

Security Forces (SFs) gunned down a senior Communist Part of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commander’ in an exchange of fire in Surnaar forest near Tetam village in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 6, reports The New Indian Express. “A gunfight ensued between the team of Dantewada District Reserve Guards (DRG) and the Maoists in the forested terrain of Surnaar and Tetam. A Maoist identified as Masa Muchaki, 31, a 'jan militia' commander was killed in the exchange of fire. He was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head. There were multiple crimes registered against him,” said Superintendent of Police (SP), Abhishek Pallava. Muchaki was militia command-in-chief of Katekalyan Area Committee in Dantewada.

A jawan(trooper) of the Special Task Force (STF) was killed when a pressure Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), went off in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on February 7, reports The Telegraph. The incident occurred around 4.30pm near Peddagellur village when a joint team of Security Forces (SFs) was out on an anti-Maoist operation. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, Sundarraj P. said, “When the patrolling team was on way back after the operation, constable Mohan Nag inadvertently stepped on the bomb, triggering the blast that left him critically injured,” he said. Later, constable Nag succumbed to his injuries.

13 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres surrendered before Police under the under “Lon Varratu” (return to your home) campaign in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 10, reports The Pioneer. Of the 13, Lakhma Midiyami, a ‘jan militia commander’, Bheema alias Kamlu Karma, ‘president of DKAMS (Dandakaranya Kisan Adivasi Mazdoor Sangh) – a frontal body of the CPI-Maoist, and Jogi Midiyami carried cash rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads. Another surrendered cadre - Mangal Ram Sodhi, was involved in an attack on the house of Congress leader Awdhesh Gautam at Nakulnar in 2010. The Maoists said they were disappointed by the Maoist ideology, meaningless violence and hardships of forest life in Bastar region.

The press note, titled “Patrkaar Evam Samaj Sevak Ke Aad Mein Corporate Gharano Kee Seva Mein Lage Farukh Ali DalaliHarqatonkeeNinda Karo...”, called for condemnation of ‘persons like Farukh Ali’ who, the press note alleged, were ‘serving the corporate families in the name of journalism and activism.’ “The corrupt and agents of corporate will surely be punished in the ‘jan adalat’ (kangaroo court),” claimed the press statement, purportedly issued by the southern sub-zonal bureau of CPI-Maoist. It reflects creeping insanity in their rank file. Six Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including four women, surrendered before Police in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 19, reports The Outlook. Of the six cadres, Kamlu alias Santosh Podiam (25), a member of platoon number 16 in Indravati area committee of CPI-Maoist, and his wife Payke Kowasi (22), in-charge of Mad division's tailoring team, were carrying a reward of INR 300,000 each on their heads. Similarly, Linga Ram Uikey (36), a supply team member, and his wife Bhume Uikey (28), a member of platoon no. 26, carried a reward of INR 200,000 each. Among the two other surrendered women cadres, Kumari Jogi (36), a member of Katekalyan area committee, had been allegedly involved in various Maoist attacks on Police teams in the District since 2007, and carried a reward of INR 500,000 on her head. Another Maoist who surrendered along with her was Pande Kawasi, a member of CNM (Chetna Natya Mandali), a cultural wing of CPI-Maoist. All of them were disappointed with the “hollow Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] ideology” and surrendered themselves under “Lon Varratu” (return to your home) campaign of the District Police.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a civilian, identified as – Lakhma Kawasi (60), at Bade Gaatav village in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on February 23, reports The Times of India. The victim was the father of a surrendered Maoist cadre - Joga Kawasi, in the said village. “A group of armed Maoists barged into the house of elderly man Lakhma Kawasi at Bade Gaatav, abused and accused him for his son who surrendered before Police, and slit his throat. They also set his body on fire. Villagers immediately doused the fire and buried his body,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava said adding that the Maoists have convened meetings at several villages in Dantewada and released leaflets with a list of surrendered cadres threatening them return to villages else their family members will be killed.

The 45th Battalion of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) recovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), planted by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, in a series circuit near Dhanora in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on February 23, reports The Pioneer. Of the two recovered IEDs, one was a pressure cooker bomb and the other one concealed the explosives and the detonator in a pipe type casing. While the pressure cooker IED weighed about 5 kilograms, the pipe bomb concealed approximately 12 kilograms explosives. Both the IEDs were defused on the spot by the paramilitary personnel.
