Pakistani authorities have sealed 182 madrassas (religious seminary) since the December 16, 2014, Peshawar school attack, in a countrywide crackdown under the National Action Plan (NAP) on religious seminaries allegedly involved in extremism, reported The Times of India quoting a report of the Associated Press of Pakistan on February 2. The madrassas were closed in Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa because of their involvement in promoting extremism and other suspicious activities.As part of the strategy to choke terror financing, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has so far frozen PKR 1 billion in 126 accounts which have a link to banned militant groups. Law-enforcement agencies have also recovered around PKR 251 million in cash. The Government has put names of 8,195 people in the fourth schedule and 188 on the Exit Control List while movement of 2,052 hardcore militants has been restricted.

Six persons, including five associated with the proscribed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) were shot dead in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, on November 4, reports Dawn. Three persons, who appeared to be 'religious scholars', were shot dead in the Shafiq Mor area of North Karachi, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Muqadas Haider, said.Further, two persons were shot dead near Fatima Bai Hospital in Patel Para area under Jamshed Quarters Police Station in Jamshed Town on November 4, reports Dawn. An ASWJ spokesman claimed that all the five victims were associated with their group. However, Police officials said they were not affiliated with ASWJ and were part of a Deoband group.

Two bank robbers, identified as Arsalan Iqbal and Dilawer alias Murad alias Tiger, were shot dead in a shootout with Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Karachi personnel in Korangi Town of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on February 11, reports The News. The two were allegedly involved in the three bank heists that took place in Karachi this year and the Sindh Government had announced a reward of PKR 1 million for their arrest.Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammed Farooq Awan of the SIU Karachi said that investigations regarding bank heists were underway during which he was tipped that members of a dacoit gang were expected to attempt a robbery in the Korangi Industrial Area (KIA). Acting on the tip-off, an SIU team was deployed in the KIA for surveillance, during which the officers witnessed three suspects on two motorcycles, who engaged the personnel in an encounter after they were signaled to stop. Two of the robbers were arrested in injured condition, while the third one managed to escape.

According to details, unidentified men hurled hand grenade at the main entrance of Mobina town Police Station. No loss of life was reported. Separately, unknown persons hurled hand grenade near APWA Girls College Karimabad. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Central Muqqadas Haider said the hand grenade was hurled from Karimabad flyover. Further, armed men launched hand grenade attack near a private school in North Nazimabad.

Police and Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), in a joint operation, arrested a militant, identified as Usman Khan, who belonged to al Qaeda Barr-e-Sagheer, from the area of Saddar Town on February 14, reports The News. The arrested militant has revealed his connections with the facilitators and masterminds of May 13, 2015, the Safoora attack. According to investigative sources, Khan is a dentist by profession and he was delivering to the al Qaeda the extortion money, collected from various areas of the city. Police on February 15 killed four criminals during an ongoing operation against criminals in the Katcha areas of Khanpur and Ghouspur in Shikarpur District, reports The Express Tribune. One Policeman, identified as Ali Gul Mahar, was also killed two others were injured in the exchange of fire. The operation was launched to recover three abductees, including a minor girl, from Thull abducted over eight years ago. However, the Police a woman, who along with five friends was kidnapped from Sehwan area two years ago. During the operation, the Police torched over ten houses and detained more than 10 suspects. Moreover, The suspects have been shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

A Session Court (South Karachi) on February 16 sentenced two suspects, identified as Naeem alias 'Cockroach' and Farhan alias 'Tidda', belonging to Muttahida Qaumi Movement party, to a collective 14-years imprisonment each in addition to a fine of PKR 10,000 each on the charges of keeping illicit weapons and explosives, reports Dawn. Police had arrested the pair from Orangi Town in March 2013, recovering two pistols and a hand grenade. A case was filed for illegal possession of arms and explosives under Sindh Arms Act section 13-d and Explosive Substances Act of 1908 sections 4 and 5.

According to details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amir Farooqi of CTD Intelligence Wing said that the CTD personnel on a tip-off raided the outskirts of the city and after an encounter arrested Hanif Khan alias Fazalullah Mehsud. The Police also recovered weapons, including Kalashnikov, from his possession. However, the associates of Khan managed to flee. A Joint Investigation Team (JIT) ‘reinvestigating’ the Baldia factory fire case that claimed the lives of 259 workers and caused injuries to 50 labourers in Karachi on September 11, 2012 has come to the conclusion that it was a “planned sabotage and terrorist activity”, reports Dawn. In the first encounter, at least eight militants were killed in Pipri area of Bin Qasim Town. "Eight militants were killed on the spot while four others, who fled the scene, were killed in Gadap area," said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Anwaar of Malir District. In the second encounter, at least four militants were killed in Gadap Town. He further said that the encounters, which lasted several hours in a slum off the National Highway, occurred during a raid on a hideout after police received intelligence-based information that terrorists belonging to banned outfits had gathered there. The terrorists had been working jointly and targeting law enforcement agencies in Karachi, Rao added. Five of the deceased suspects were identified as Sohail, Khalil, Bilal,Talha and Abdul Salam. During the search operation the Police they found four pressure cooker bombs, suicide jackets, detonating cords, five hand grenades, ball bearings, five submachine guns, three 9mm pistols and hundreds of bullets.
