An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) awarded 28 years’ imprisonment to five Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants on November 1, reports The News. The five, indentified as Suleman, Najmuddin alias Najibullah, Abdul Jaleel, Imran and Gul Fraz, were arrested after a police encounter in the Kalri Police jurisdiction in 2014. They were found guilty of possessing explosive material and illegal arms, and the court ordered confiscating their movable and immovable properties.

Meanwhile, the apex committee on November 3 decided to launch a crackdown on drug dealers and criminals involved in street crime besides compiling a list of people, particularly seminary students, who have been to Afghanistan, Iran and Syria in recent years, reports Dawn. In its 17th meeting held at Chief Minister (CM) House, the apex committee also decided that the names which had been put on fourth schedule and those of 3,023 proclaimed offenders would be shared with Federal and Provincial agencies to monitor their activities and arrest them. The CM gave a go-ahead for the upgrade of 1,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to 12 mega pixel and assured the law enforcement agencies of his support to make Karachi one of the most peaceful cities in the world.

The administration of Malala Government Girls Secondary School, located on Mission Road in Bhimpura area of Sadar Town in Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, has concealed the name of Malala inscribed at the façade of the school building due to threats, reports Daily Times on November 3 (today). The administration told that some suspects have threatened the parents of girl's students to keep them at homes instead of sending to the school. This move has also terrified the students of the school. The enrolment has also decreased after these threats. The school management has informed the concerned authorities about this situation, but Education Department and Law Enforcement Agencies (LEA) are not taking any concrete steps for the security of the school.

Provincial Police Chief AD Khwaja said that the crackdown was aimed at both Sunni and Shiite seminaries. Pakistan Rangers Sindh on November 9-night claimed to have killed three suspected militants in an encounter at Manghopir area on the outskirts of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports Dawn. “The paramilitary force had conducted an intelligence driven action on suspected hideouts of banned outfit’s hardcore criminals at Manghopir area who were allegedly involved in terrorist activities,” said Rangers spokesperson. "During the raid the suspects, in an attempt to escape, opened fire on law enforcement agencies. In an ensuing exchange of fire between Rangers and the gunmen, three suspects got killed," the spokesperson added. Furthermore, Rangers official claimed that one soldier got injured in the alleged encounter and weapons were also seized from suspects' custody.

The activists, Shoaib Attari and Syed Imran, were booked by the A-Section police of Latifabad in an FIR (3/2015) lodged by Amir Khoso, brother of the victim, Mohammad Hassan Khoso, on January 2, 2015. The complainant had stated that his brother owned a burger shop in Unit-11 of Latifabad. He alleged that the accused had demanded extortion money from him and on his refusal, they shot dead him. An unnamed Sunni Tehreek ‘spokesman’ said on November 23 that the convicts were its activists, but added that they had been politically implicated in the case. He said the case had been pursued by the convicts’ family members but now party was coordinating with them to file an appeal in the Sindh High Court.Meanwhile, an ATC court acquitted on November 23 two men accused in the murder case of as many Police officers for lack of evidence. Wasiq Mirza and Farhan have been charged with the murder of Station House Officer of the Sir Syed Police Station inspector Syed Irfan Haider and his friend Sub-Inspector Shahbaz Ali of the New Karachi Police Station, who were gunned down near Anda Mor in North Karachi in October 2013. The ATC-V judge exonerated the accused after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides and ruled that eyewitnesses had not identified them as assailants. The same court had also acquitted another accused Azhar Mehmood in the present case in March 2016 on similar grounds. The FIR was registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997 at the Sir Syed police station.

The paramilitary force conducted the raid on a house in Gadap Town and seized the weapons. The recovered weapons included one light machine gun, one 7MM rifle, one 8MM rifle, two submachine guns, one 9MM pistol, three 30-bore submachine guns, three 12-bore repeaters, three TT pistols, one 32-bore revolver and thousands of bullets. The Rangers official claimed that an ‘active militant wing’ had stored these weapons and ammunition at the hideout. The officer did not identify the wing. “These weapons were supposed to be used for spreading lawlessness and carrying out targeted killings in the metropolis,” said the Rangers statement.Meanwhile, President Mamnoon Hussain on November 23 called for taking the ongoing operation in Karachi to its logical conclusion without any concession for criminals. The president said the objective of achieving economic stability was possible only after the elimination of terrorism and unrest for which coordination between the people and law enforcement agencies was essential.

Separately, a member of Ahmadi community, Shaikh Sajid Mehmood, was shot dead in suspected sectarian attack in the Gulzar-i-Hijri area of Gulshan Town in the evening of November 27, according to Police and the community official. “This was third such targeting killings in the same vicinity during last several months,” said a spokesperson of Jamaat Ahmadiya. Previously, Khaleeq and Daud were shot dead down in Gulzar-e-Hijri.Police’s Counter-Terrorism Department official Raja Umer Khattab said that the killing of DSP Shigri and Ahmadi man were motivated by sectarian considerations. He suspected involvement of the same group behind the both incidents. The CTD official said previously, Al Qaeda targeted people in Gulistan-e-Jauhar whose members later on joined Islamic State but this gang was busted in 2013. However, the court acquitted suspect Wajid Balock over lack of evidence.Meanwhile, ATC on November 29 awarded 10-year imprisonment to two extortionists, Adnan and Salman in Karachi, reports The News. The two men had demanded PR 500,000 from a citizen, Sajid, on April 18. They had threatened to kidnap the man if he refused to pay the extortion money. The accused were arrested and during interrogation, they admitted the crime. As the prosecution proved the charge against them, the ATC awarded 10-year jail to both of them.
