Three years ago, the victim’s father and elder brother were abducted from their homes at Mirchaiya in the Siraha District. Addressing a mass meeting on January 13, Prime Minister and chairman of Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-Maoist) Prachanda warned of a 'people's revolt' if the current Maoist-led Government is forced to quit, reports Nepal News. "This government is not a repetition of past ones. If it is overthrown our party will spearhead a people's revolt from the next day and capture power… Nothing in the world will stop us," he said. The meeting was organised in Kathmandu to make the formal announcement of unification between the CPN-Maoist and Communist Party of Nepal-Unity Centre (Masal). Prachanda heads the united party which has been named as Unified CPN-Maoist. The party will have a 175-member central committee that includes 38 members from the Unity Centre (Masal).

More than 150 cadres of the United CPN-Maoist and Madheshi Janaadhikar Forum (MJF) deserted parent parties on January 15 and announced the formation of a new outfit named the Krantikari Rastriya Madheshi Mukti Morcha Nepal. Hira Kumar Nishad, a former member of the Abadh State Committee of the Maoists, reportedly heads the outfit. He was also the battalion commander of the Maoists’ Krishnasen Smriti Brigade. Kantipuronline reports that Police on January 18 arrested a Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (Unified CPN-Maoist) cadre, Shrawan Yadav, from his house in the Rampurbirta area of Siraha District on the charge of murdering the Janakpur-based journalist Uma Singh. Yadav, the Maoist's regional committee member of Siraha-5, was arrested on the basis of a statement given by Nemlal Paswan, another accused, who was arrested from Saghar in the Dhanusha District on January 17. According to Police, Paswan is an ‘army commander’ of the Terai Ekata Parishad and a notorious criminal. The Maoist Siraha in-charge, Dilip Sah, confirmed Yadav as their regional committee member.
