At least six persons, including one Khasadar personnel, were killed and 56 others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the entrance of Political Agent office in the Jamrud tehsil (revenue unit) of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on September 1, reports Dawn. Security sources say six of those injured were in critical condition. Political Agent Shahab Ali Shah said that the suicide bomber was aiming to enter his office but the plot was foiled because of the strict security measures in place at the complex. Therefore, the bomber could not enter the premises and blew himself up at the entrance gate, Shah said. Two militant groups, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Islami (LI) claimed responsibility for the attack, reports The News. Salahuddin Ayubi, spokesman for the Mangal Bagh-led LI, was the first to claim responsibility for the blast. Speaking from an unknown location using an Afghanistan mobile phone number, he said their target were government officials. Later, the TTP spokesman Mohammad Khorasani asserted responsibility for the suicide attack and said those officials tasked to implement the Government’s National Action Plan were the target. He said the attack was carried out by the TTP’s special martyrdom unit.

Taliban attacks have cost the economy as much as USD 5 billion a year in lost investment, the Finance Secretary Waqar Masood said in an interview in London on September 21, adding that Islamabad is keeping its options open for another International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, reports The Express Tribune. “Our people have suffered terribly over the last 10-15 years and we have lost out enormously in terms of economic opportunities and output because of terrorism,” said Masood. “We have seen in the past foreign (investment) inflows of USD 5-7 billion but today we are not even having (investment of) USD 2 billion,” he said, noting that security costs and damage to the economy had to be added to that.

The Provincial administration on September 28 launched an operation in Kohat District following reports about presence of illegal foreigners in the local seminaries, reports Dawn. District Police Officer (DPO) Mohammad Sohaeb Ashraf said that the objective of the operation was to computerise the data of the seminaries, check militant activities there and verify that their curriculum was approved by Waqaful Madaris, the supreme body looking after the seminaries countrywide. He said that they had already evicted 24 Afghan prayer leaders from various mosques in the city and its outskirts. He said that Afghan students, almost all of whom belonged to Deoband school of thought, were allowed to study in the seminaries as the ban was applicable only to the members of banned religious outfits. “All the data will be collected and the family background of the students and teachers will also be confirmed. During the operation, the luggage of the students and their teachers is also being checked for banned books and diaries to ascertain their contacts with banned organisations,” said the official. He said that the seminaries, which were constructed without proper permission and approval of the industrial department, would be closed. Another unnamed official said that there might be some seminaries near the Afghan border and in the tribal areas which were under the control of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or any other banned group. The political administrations had been ordered to seal such seminaries, he added.
