Pakistan on February 1 reiterated its demand for Afghanistan to extradite the leaders of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) while underscoring the need for bringing to justice those responsible for terrorism and maintaining regional security, reports Dawn. “We urge Afghanistan to take immediate and effective action against these terrorist entities, hand over their leadership to Pakistan, and those individuals who have been involved in terrorist activities inside Pakistan,” Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said at the weekly media briefing. Her comments came in the backdrop of the thirty-third report submitted to the United Nations Security Council Committee by the militant Islamic State (IS) group and Al Qaeda/Taliban Monitoring Team, which showed that besides the patronage of Taliban administration, Afghanistan-based TTP enjoys the backing of Al Qaeda and also has links with East Turkestan Islamic Movement and Majeed Brigade. “We have shared concrete evidence with regards to their involvement with Afghan authorities,” the spokesperson said and added that Pakistan government was “very concerned” that TTP is given a free hand to attack Pakistan, and to sponsor terrorist activities inside Pakistan. Further, FO spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch emphasised that Pakistan-Afghanistan border is an internationally recognised and legally valid reality. Her statement came in response to remarks by Noorullah Noori, the acting Taliban Minister of Borders and Tribal Affairs, who referred to the Durand Line as an “imaginary line” and contested the clarity of the border between the two countries. The Durand Line has long been a subject of contention, with Afghanistan historically disputing its legitimacy as a border. The FO spokesperson stressed the non-negotiable status of the border’s validity, stating that it has “never been on the agenda between Pakistan and Afghanistan and will never be.”

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) released a statement on February 1 which said “385 Baloch freedom fighters, including 12 Fidayeen, participated in Operation Dara-e-Bolan; 78 enemy personnel eliminated – BLA is ready to work with any nation against the common enemy for mutual benefit”, reports The Balochistan Post. In the statement, the BLA reported the “successful” completion of Operation Dara-e-Bolan, a two-day-long military operation spanning from January 29, 2024, to January 31, 2024. The operation involved the participation of 385 BLA fighters from various units of the group, including 12 ‘Fidayeen’ (self-sacrificer) from the Majeed Brigade, members of the Fateh Squad, Special Tactical Operations Squad, and the intelligence wing. BLA stated that the operation, which concluded at 7 pm on January 31, achieved all its targeted goals. The BLA secured control over a 70km radius area, including the town of Mach and the strategically important highway NH-65. During Operation Dara-e-Bolan, BLA also claimed to have eliminated 78 “enemy personnel”, with 45 neutralized within the first three hours of the operation. Notable incidents included the elimination of 10 Frontier Corps (FC) personnel in an attack on a military camp in Peer Ghaib, Bolan, and the killing of four Pakistani soldiers in an attack on a military convoy in Gokurt. Twelve Pakistani military personnel were reported killed when BLA fighters stormed the FC headquarters on January 30. Additionally, five SSG Commandos and two police personnel, including a Station House Officer (SHO), lost their lives during the operation. BLA acknowledged the arrest of Levies and Police personnel during the operation, releasing them upon assurances of impartiality. However, BLA reported that the SHO of Mach police attempted to exploit this concession and was subsequently punished.

A new political party named Pakistan Markazi Muslim League, believed to be a new face of the banned groups of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed, Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), the frontal organisation of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) will participate in the February 8 general elections, India Today quoting BBC Urdu reported on February 5. A BBC Urdu report said some of the candidates nominated by this organisation from different cities of Pakistan are those who are either relatives of Hafiz Saeed or have been associated with the LeT, JuD or Milli Muslim League in the past. Saeed, who has been incarcerated in a jail in Lahore, has been sentenced to a total of 31 years by Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in several cases of financing terrorism. Quoting analysts, who monitor religious parties in Pakistan, the report on February 3 claimed the Markazi Muslim League is the 'new political face' of Saeed's JuD. A spokesman of the party, however, denied any affiliation with Saeed’s organisations. The report said Saeed’s son Hafiz Talha Saeed is participating in the elections from the Markazi Muslim League party and contesting from National Assembly Constituency NA-122 in Lahore -- the same constituency from which Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and former federal minister Khawaja Saad Rafique is also contesting. Similarly, Saeed’s son-in-law Hafiz Nek Gujjar is contesting the election from the Provincial Assembly constituency PP-162 on the ticket of the Markazi Muslim League.

The Army said on February 8 that 51 terrorist attacks took place in the lead-up to the general elections, aimed at disrupting the polling process, reports The Nation. “Despite 51 cowardly terrorist attacks, mostly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, aimed at disrupting the electoral process, the soldiers remained resolute and effectively ensured peace and security across Pakistan,” the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. As many as 12 people — including 10 personnel of Security Forces and law enforcement agencies — embraced martyrdom, and 39 others have been injured in these attacks, ISPR added. In Balochistan, the general elections saw a significant disruption, characterized by a series of armed attacks on polling stations, a marked public rejection of the electoral process, and notably low voter turnout was also reported. The coastal regions, including Gwadar, Jiwani, and Pasni, also witnessed bombings near polling stations. Notably, in Gwadar, 14 explosions occurred near polling stations and the vehicle of the Assistant Commissioner, injuring two officials. Despite the Information Minister’s assurances of security, the election lead-up saw over 125 incidents targeting the election campaigns, with Baloch Raji Aajoi Sangar (BRAS), a coalition of ‘pro-independence’ Baloch insurgent groups, claiming responsibility for 112 attacks in just ten days before the election day.
