According to police sources, eleven cadres of the Ranvir Sena, a private army of upper-caste landowners, were reportedly arrested for the murder of six Dalits (lowest rung in the Hindu caste system) on January 3. The Dalits were killed by the Ranvir Sena in Pariari village of Arwal district in Bihar. All the victims were suspected to have been supporters of left wing extremists—Naxalites—of the Maoist Communist Center (MCC). The police said that 23 Sena activists have been accused in the case. Meanwhile, the MCC has reportedly threatened to avenge the killing of its sympathisers by the Ranvir Sena.

On January 14, the proscribed terrorist outfit, Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen (JuM), reportedly threatened to kill All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) chairman Moulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari and other leaders of his faction, a day after the latter received an invitation from the Union Government for talks. "Ansari and his colleagues are hereby warned not to kneel at the doorsteps of Delhi or else they will face dire consequences," the outfit’s ‘field commander general’ Mohammad Umer said. "Ansari and his colleagues will be done to death one by one," he added. "We cannot go for peace when our own people are behind bars," a leader of the People's War Group (PWG) was quoted as saying in a local newspaper. "We will kidnap 18 government employees if all the arrested people are not released," he added.
