Allah Nizar Baloch, the leader of Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), on March 28 claimed that the Pakistani military establishment is using the surging cases of coronavirus infections to expand its occupation in Balochistan, reports Times of India. "We believe that the Pakistan Army would use the COVID-19 outbreak to expand its occupation and stranglehold over Balochistan while continuing its atrocities and genocide of the Baloch," Allah Nizar Baloch was quoted as saying by Sangar Publication, a mouthpiece of the movement. The BLF leader said that the disaster of quarantine centre in Taftan (Pakistan-Iran border town) which is run by Pakistan Army "is a clear example". At least 57 per cent of all people who have tested positive for coronavirus in Pakistan passed through the camp at some stage, according to Government data cited by Al Jazeera. More than 400 people remain quarantined at Taftan camp, according to the provincial Government's data.

Government have imposed an indefinite ban on official website of Human Rights Commission of Balochistan (also known as Hakkpaan), reports Balochistan Post. HRCB claims to be a non-profit human rights organization operating in Balochistan; a region that already suffers from strict levels of media restriction. They also have firm bases in foreign countries like Sweden, the United Kingdom (UK) and France. From the past few years, HRCB has been actively working in Balochistan to collect information about the ongoing human rights abuses and report them to the international media and organizations. They employ “a network of volunteers and supporters” that assemble and communicate information from the remotest corners of Balochistan. In an official statement, HRCB exhibited shock on this act and mentioned that they are a fair and unbiased “human rights organisation” and not “a party to the war in Balochistan.” In an apprehensive tone, HRCB expressed their fear that after the unanticipated banning of their website, Pakistani authorities might target their “volunteers and office-bearers who are living in the country.”

China is secretly building a high-security compound near Gwadar Port in Balochistan which it will probably use for naval base, Times of India reported on June 3. According to Forbes, a leading Aerospace and Defense magazine, analysts have been watching for the first signs of a long-expected Chinese naval base at Gwadar. "The base, to complement the one at Djibouti, would strengthen China's foothold in the Indian Ocean. Recent satellite images appear to show that several new complexes have been built in the last few years. One of them, identified as a Chinese company involved in port development, has unusually high security," said Forbes.

The Baloch Republican Army (BRA) cadres on June 13 shot dead one State backed ‘death squad’ member and injured another in Panjgur District of Balochistan, reports The Balochistan Post. According to the details received by The Balochistan Post, BRA cadres killed a person, identified as Shoaib, who was said to be a member of state backed local Death Squad. According to Baloch political and social circles, death squads have been formed in Balochistan under the auspices of Pakistani intelligence agencies and the Army. Individuals belonging to these groups were openly allowed to commit theft, robbery and other crimes. Meanwhile, BRA claimed the responsibility for the killing of Shoaib. The BRA ‘spokesperson’, Beebagr Baloch, in a statement released to the media, has said that Shoaib had been active in abduction of Baloch civilians, theft and extortion in the area for the last five years, under state patronage. He further said; “according to the organization’s investigation, the accused was directly involved in various military operations, including the enforced disappearances of more than ten innocent Baloch civilians, while confiscating the rations of the poor people from the local buses that these goods are being taken to the freedom fighters. His criminal offenses include extortion from businessmen using the name of our organization and burglary.” Beebagr Baloch expressed regret to Peer Bakhash, who was wounded in the attack. “We once again appeal to the people to keep distance from the state officials and spies, as we will intensify our attacks on them,” he added.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on July 24 expressed his firm resolve to end the “sense of deprivation” long felt by the people of Balochistan by launching a series of development projects to undo the neglect of decades in the province, reports Daily Times. “Ensuring complete peace, security and socio-economic development for the people of Balochistan are the key priorities of my government,” he said while chairing the second meeting of the National Development Council (NDC). The NDC’s first meeting was held in August 2019 after its formation in June that year. The PM said he was fully cognizant of the problems people in Balochistan face and expressed his commitment to turn the situation around by providing them relief and services in the best possible manner. “Financial resources allocated for Balochistan in the past were never diverted towards the development of the province,” he said. PM further said such a state of affairs led to dismal development in the province and caused “a sense of deprivation” among its people. “There must be a full focus on the development of infrastructure, provision of employment for the youth, and completion of road networks to gain benefit from the completion of the Gwadar Port and the CPEC,” PM added further.
