On January 27, 15 people including six police officials were killed and 60 others injured in a suicide attack targeting a Muharram procession near Qasim Ali Khan Mosque in the Dilgaran area of Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar, capital of Pakistan's North Western Frontier Province (NWFP). Peshawar police commissioner Mallik Muhammad Saad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), three other police personnel and a Nazim (local official) were among those killed in the blast. Superintendent of Peshawar Police Zaibullah said that an unidentified bomber detonated explosives strapped to his body when police stopped him from entering the procession, which was to be taken out from Qasim Ali Khan Mosque. A senior security official said the two severed legs of the suspected bomber had been recovered from the site. The blast also caused a power outage that left the city centre in darkness, complicating rescue efforts. NWFP law minister told Daily Times that the attack is “an act of terrorism” and there was no evidence to suggest that the incident was part of Shia-Sunni sectarian violence.

A police officer and two attackers were killed, while 13 others, including three paramilitary soldiers and a constable, were wounded when suspected militants attacked a police station, an armoured personnel carrier and Frontier Corp (FC) fort with hand grenades in Tank city of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on March 26, Police and residents said, according to Dawn. Police said the first incident took place on the Wana road when a group of suspected militants entered a private high school and forced the administration to let them deliver a jihadi sermon to the students and recruit them for holy war. After the sermon, they told the principal of the Oxford Public High School that they would enlist students for jihad and take them for training the same day, but he tried to stop them. Meanwhile, a Police party arrived at the place and the militants hurled a hand grenade, killing SHO Hassan Khan, and critically wounding a constable. Police opened fire on the assailants, killing one of them and injuring two others. One of the wounded attackers later died.

Daily Times reports that at least 25 Taliban militants and a paramilitary soldier were killed in a gun battle that continued for six-hours in Tank of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on March 28. Tank District Police Officer Mumtaz Zarin said that security forces killed at least 25 militants when more than 200 Taliban cadres attacked the city from all sides. A police source said that two police stations, a paramilitary fort and bank branches were damaged in the Taliban attack. "Several banks were looted and their record was burnt," he added. Curfew was imposed in the city and the civil administration asked the army for help in preventing the Taliban from taking control of the city. NWFP Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sharif Virk told, "The (Taliban) attack was repulsed effectively." The recent surge in violence began on March 26 when police clashed with Taliban recruiters outside a private school and a police officer and a militant were killed.

At least four persons were killed and as many wounded in clashes between two militant groups in South Waziristan on March 29, officials and residents said, according to Dawn. Both sides used heavy weapons in the fighting which left the four, two of them foreigners, dead. Sources said the clashes erupted early in the morning between supporters of militant commander Maulvi Nazir and his rival Noor Islam, who is backing foreigners in Azam Warsak, Shin Warsak, Jaghundai and Kalosha areas. The fighting began when the Nazir group tried to dislodge foreigners from a Government school in Ghawakha area, the sources said. A cease-fire was brokered after three hours of fighting. However, a local tribal commander said that fighting would continue until all foreign militants were expelled from South Waziristan. "Though a jirga is still trying to negotiate a ceasefire, our position remains firm that all Uzbek militants should leave the area," Haji Sharif, a supporter of Mullah Nazir, told AFP.

Six people were killed and 15 others, including four police personnel, were injured in clashes between security force (SF) personnel and Islamic militants in the Tank city of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on May 16, according to Dawn. According to witnesses, a rocket fired by the militants landed in the Rizwan Grain market of the city on Tank-Dera road, killing five civilians, including two brothers. Clashes in different parts of the city occurred for more than two hours and both sides used rockets and light cannons, causing collateral damage to bazaars and residential areas, residents said. Some unidentified people reportedly lobbed hand-grenades at district courts where SFs had set up checkpoints. The attack, however, did not hurt anyone. Later, the militants, armed with rockets and heavy machine-guns, moved into the town and started targeting the SFs. "The number of attackers was about 40 who challenged the security forces and went back to their area," an eye-witness said. People alleged that SFs fired on civilians instead of targeting militants who were seen roaming freely in the city.

Maulana Muhammad Amir, caretaker of the Ziul Aloom seminary in the Dattakhel area, said all those killed were local tribesmen, and the target was not a Madrassa, as reported in the press, but "a tent on a hilltop". However, the political administration of North Waziristan said that 30 "terrorists" were killed and 18 of them were foreigners, including Chechens, Uzbeks and Arabs, APP reported. Maulana Muhammad Alam, member of a peace committee monitoring implementation of the September 5, 2006-peace accord in North Waziristan, said the political administration "knows little about the air strike and the military says nothing. People in Shakkardarra said that militants of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), who had set up check-posts on the main road and took positions on hills, seized the four men during the checking of vehicles. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the execution, but Maulana Naddar, a lieutenant of TNSM leader Maulana Fazlullah, said in a broadcast on an FM radio that the men had been executed to avenge the death of three militants killed early in the day.

According to Dawn, the local Taliban killed three people and injured five others in an attack on a cockfight fare at the Shene Ghundae village in the Shabqadar dub-division of Charsadda district of NWFP on December 2. Witnesses said the weekly fare was in progress when a group of militants appeared from nowhere and opened indiscriminate fire on the people. Three persons, Nawar, Bismillah Jan and Mohammad Ali were killed on the spot. Witnesses said that the militants arrived in three pick-up trucks and were armed with sophisticated weapons, including Kalashnikovs. A spokesman for the local Taliban, Abdu Nauman Askari, said that they had earlier warned Akhtiar Khan, the organiser of the cockfighting fare and alleged ringleader of gambling dens in the area, to abandon the ‘anti-Islam’ practices. An official of the concerned Sro Kaley police station told Dawn that the militants had entered the area from the adjacent Mohmand Agency. He added that since the militants came through unfrequented routes, it was difficult for police to trace them.

Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson, was assassinated on December 27 in a gun and suicide attack as she drove away from a campaign rally just minutes after addressing thousands of supporters at Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi, according to Daily Times. 30 more people were killed and over 100 others, including Benazir’s political secretary Naheed Khan and Sherry Rehman, wounded when a suicide attacker riding on a motorbike blew himself up after firing at Benazir who was waving to her supporters from her vehicle’s sun roof. PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar stated that Benazir fell inside the vehicle after receiving bullets in her head and neck. Witnesses said three gun shots were heard before the suicide blast near her Black Lexus bulletproof vehicle. She later died at the Rawalpindi General Hospital. “The blast happened at around 5:10pm and the doctors pronounced her dead at 5:25pm,” Babar said. "It may have been pellets packed into the suicide bomber's vest that hit her," interior ministry spokesman Javed Cheema told AFP. Following the assassination, PPP activists reacted violently in different cities in Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan. Angry protestors took to the streets, pelted stones, burned government and private property and various vehicles besides chanting slogans against the government, The Post reported. At least 10 people were killed in different parts of the country, including two in Lahore, during the exchange of fire. In Karachi, police said at least 70 vehicles were burnt by protesters, including 35 trucks filled with wheat. All petrol pumps were immediately closed as knots of protesters blocked many roads. Incidents of aerial firing were reported in different parts especially in Peshawar, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Karachi and Quetta. Official sources told The News that civil armed forces have been summoned in aid of the security agencies to maintain law and order, adding the security around sensitive installations and government personalities has been beefed up.
