At least 12 persons were killed and 25 others wounded when a suicide bomber blew himself up in an imambargah (congregation hall for Shia rituals) in Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on January 17, according to Dawn. Police said that the teenage bomber blew himself at the crowded Mirza Qasim Baig Imambargah in the Mohalla Janghi area at around 6.55pm (PST). Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Imtiaz Shah told reporters that a policeman had attempted to frisk the suspect but he pushed him aside and detonated the explosive vest he was wearing. "It was a suicide attack," interior ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema confirmed, adding that "The bomber was 15 or 16 years old and he blew himself up after entering the gate leading to the prayer hall." The NWFP Inspector General of Police, Sharif Virk, told Geo TV that 10 kilograms of explosives and three kilograms of ball bearings were used in the blast.

Sources said firing continued near the tunnel on January 26-night and several blasts were heard in the city. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said security forces (SFs) had cleared the area and regained control of the Kohat tunnel and adjoining areas after fierce fighting. The tunnel connects the southern parts of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) with capital Peshawar through the Indus Highway. The ISPR claimed that 24 militants had been killed and many others had fled leaving arms and ammunition.

Three Pakistan Army soldiers were killed and four others wounded when militants attacked the troops in the Angamal area near Razmak. The troops returned the fire which led to a heavy shooting, resulting in the killing of three soldiers and injuries to four others. Military officials said several militants were also killed in the gun-battle and artillery shelling from Razmak military camp later, but they were unaware of the exact losses suffered by the militants. They added that 12 militants were subsequently arrested from Tiarza.

At least six persons, including two civilians, were killed in a gun battle in Mardan in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) after police raided a suspected militant hideout at 5am (PST) on February 2, sources said, according to Daily Times. Mardan police official said that the gun battle ensued when police raided the house of one Afsar Ali, wanted by police for attacks on music shops, in the Palodehri area. Two policemen and two militants, including Adnan, whose brother Kamran was an aide of Baitullah Mehsud in the district, were killed in the gun battle. Sources said while a woman passing by was killed in the crossfire, a civilian Azam Khan was also killed as militants entered his house. Police seized three Kalashnikovs, eight hand grenades and two suicide vests from the house. Sources also said that the police had raided the area a week ago but the militants, 25 to 40 in number, managed to escape.

A suicide bomber on February 16 rammed his explosives-laden car into the election office of an independent candidate in Parachinar city of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), killing at least 38 persons, including six children, and injuring 109 others, reports Daily Times. The Interior Ministry has confirmed the death of 27 people.” It was a suicide attack, there were people outside the candidate’s house and they were waiting for food when this man attacked,” Caretaker Interior Minister Hamid Nawaz told AFP. “It is a very unfortunate incident. Maximum security measures are in place for February 17 and 18 and the campaign is going to end tonight,” he added. According to eyewitness, the bomber hit the election office of independent candidate for NA-37 Kurram Agency, Syed Riaz Hussain Shah, where a large number of people had gathered. “A man with long hair drove a car into the crowd and blew himself up. There were bodies and blood everywhere,” witness Laiq Hussain told AFP. The blast came on the final day of campaigning for National Assembly (NA) polls scheduled to be held on February 18, and was the bloodiest in a series of attacks since Benazir Bhutto’s murder in December.

A remote-controlled bomb ripped through a wedding party procession on February 22, killing 14 people and critically wounding 13 others, mostly children, in the Matta tehsil (administrative division) of Swat district in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), hospital and police sources said, according to Daily Times. The bomb, which was detonated in the Ronial Takh Maira area of the region, exploded around 4pm (PST) when the wedding party was travelling from Kandogai village to Pir Dar Baba village. The bride, four children aged between five and 12 years, and four bystanders died instantly. "There was a remote-controlled bomb explosion which targeted a wedding party. Two cars were destroyed including the car in which the bride was travelling, [and] she died," local police officer Haroon Khan told AFP. Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema confirmed that the bomb had targeted the wedding party. He and an ISPR spokesman had earlier said that eight people were killed in the bombing. This was the first such incident after the completion of the largely peaceful parliamentary elections on February 18. None of the militant groups have accepted responsibility and police have not made any arrests thus far. Following the blast, the security forces restarted the military operation in Matta and shelled suspected positions of militants from Kanju, Channel-5 reported.

According to police, at least 50 armed men stormed the check-post manned by reserve police and Frontier Corps personnel at the Qadirabad Primary School of Matni area. Five workers of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) were killed while ten others sustained injuries in an attack by a group of ten militants in Mansehra in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on February 25-afternoon. The dead included two women workers of the British non-government organisation, Plan International, according to The News. According to eyewitnesses, the militants overpowered the security guard and intruded into the building where the office was located, and took the NGO personnel hostage. The militants also opened fire on the personnel present there and then lobbed a hand grenade on the office while leaving the site. The British-run NGO was actively distributing relief goods, including food items, blankets and utensils, among the earthquake victims.

40 people were killed and more than 75 others sustained injuries when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the funeral prayers of the slain Deputy Superintendent of Police (Lakki Marwat), Javed Iqbal Khan, in the Mingora city of Swat district on February 29-evening, The News reported. Among the dead were a son of the deceased police officer, Ghazan Khan, and the Station House Officer of Mingora police station Habib Jamal. Independent sources, however, put the death toll at 50, fearing that the number could rise as majority of the injured were in a critical condition. According to AFP, nearly 1,000 people were attending the funeral. Reuters quoted the number as 500, adding that most of the casualties were policemen. District Police Officer Waqif Khan said the bomber was among the people taking part in the funeral, Dawn reported. Residents of Mingora said that the blast occurred when the funeral concluded and the people had started to disperse. "A huge and deafening explosion rocked the school building when a police party had begun presenting guard of honour to the deceased," said Haji Dost Mohammad. Deputy Superintendent of Police Javed Iqbal, who died in a bomb blast along with three other policemen in the troubled southern Lakki Marwat district on February 29-morning, belonged to Makan Bagh in Mingora city.

According to The News, at least 10 people were killed and six others injured when dozens of armed men belonging to the Khyber Agency-based Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) attacked Shiekhan village on the outskirts of Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) with rocket launchers and other sophisticated weapons before bulldozing a shrine and four houses on March 3. Some sources put the death toll at 16 and said 15 of the deceased were villagers. Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse hundreds of angry villagers who blocked the main Bara Road to register their protest against the LeI militants. "Dozens of armed men of Mangal Bagh-led militant organisation attacked Shiekhan village at around 11.30 am. The villagers, mostly unarmed and unprepared, resisted the assault that resulted into a fierce clash between the rival groups," said a police official. While the militants used rockets and mortar shells besides machineguns and AK-47 assault rifles, the villagers retaliated with rifles. The heavy fighting that continued for hours restricted hundreds of villagers in the nearby areas to their houses. Students in the local schools were also confined to their institutions. Before fleeing to their stronghold Bara in the Khyber Agency of FATA, the LeI militants bulldozed four houses and set ablaze a shrine after razing its building. The Mangal Bagh-led LeI group had reportedly warned the villagers against the stay of a saint, Pir Abdul Hakeem, in the Dani Baba Shrine. The saint is among six people, including a woman, who sustained injuries in the attack. The attack is the first by LeI in the settled part of Peshawar. Mangal Bagh, the head of the LeI, has been enforcing his own brand of Islam in his areas for about two years, according to Dawn. Locals told Daily Times that Shiekhan is home to supporters of Pir Saifur Rehman, who was expelled from Bara in 2007 under immense pressure from the LeI.

Four militants and a villager were killed in a gun-battle which erupted in the Khankhel area of Lakki Marwat district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on March 4 after the abduction of a union council official and his two associates. Two of the militants were Uzbek nationals while the rest were tribal Wazirs, District Police Officer Romail Akram told Dawn, adding that an Uzbek militant had been arrested. Bakhmal Union Council official Malik Mohammad Idrees Khan and associates Musawwir Gul and Hayatullah were coming to Serai Gambila when five armed militants intercepted their car near Manzar Faqeer area and abducted them, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Umar Faraz Khattak. A heavy contingent of police and Frontier Constabulary personnel were subsequently sent to the area to ensure that the abducted people were not taken to the tribal belt. Armed volunteers, sources said, surrounded the militants at a place near Khankhel, held talks with them and got the three persons freed. A curfew has been imposed in the Hangu district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) province after clashes erupted between Shia and Sunni Muslims during a Nauroz (Persian New Year festival) procession on March 21, leaving four dead and 28 others injured, reports Daily Times. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition. The violence erupted after members of the Shia community of the region came under fire as they hoisted a flag on a mosque to mark Nauroz. Locals said the Nauroz celebrations were going on peacefully at a madrassa (Seminary) when they were fired upon with rockets and mortar shells, APP reported. “We have clamped an indefinite curfew and summoned troops to restore peace. The situation is tense,” local police officer Akbar Ali told AFP after the incident. He said sporadic firing continued despite the curfew. The district co-ordination officer of the region also called a jirga (council) that successfully negotiated a truce between Sunnis and Shias of the area. The cease-fire is to last five months. Each sect has deposited PKR 1 million with the jirga as a form of surety bond.

48 militants, including a commander, and five soldiers were killed and an unspecified number of people were injured as fierce clashes continued in the Swat Valley of the NWFP for the second consecutive day on July 30, The News reported. The fighting erupted on July 29 after the militants attacked a security post in their stronghold in the Matta sub-division and took about 25 security force (SF) personnel hostage. After the overnight targeting of various militants’ positions, the SFs, backed by gunship helicopters, carried out an operation and shelled suspected militant positions in several parts of the valley, including Peuchar, Namal, Ronial, Sarbanda and Chuprial that left 48 persons dead and as many injured. The Taliban militants also claimed killing 25 SF personnel, but the claim could not be confirmed independently. A military spokesman said in the daylong clashes with the militants, one officer, a junior officer and three soldiers were killed. The two sides clashed in the Sijbanr area of Matta in which, according to the military spokesman, approximately 25 militants were killed. In the Sarbanda area of Matta, hundreds of militants attacked the troops and claimed killing 30 SF personnel. The claim was rejected by the military, which said that only two officers and three soldiers were killed in the attack. Further, SFs also killed 12 militants and injured several others when they attacked the militants, who had laid siege to the Matta police station. The militants targeted the Wenai check-post with rockets and one militant was killed when the troops retaliated. Backed by gunship helicopters, the SFs also attacked suspected positions of the militants in the mountainous area of Peuchar, killing ‘commander’ Maulvi Hussain Ali alias Tor Mulla and 10 others. The attack also left six militants, including commander Nisar, injured. In the Jura area of Matta, shelling by the Army gunship helicopters injured 13 people. In the Shangwatai area of Matta, two persons were killed as the peach orchard, they were working in, was targeted by military gunship helicopters. In addition, approximately 24 mortar shells landed in Nihag Darra area on the Swat-Dir border injuring two persons. The militants also blew up a Government hotel in Malam Jabba, which they had torched earlier, and an Army rest house in the Charbagh sub-division. They also blew up a Government girls’ school in Gulibagh and bridges in the Gurra, Ronial and other areas of Matta. The local military officials said curfew across the Swat Valley would remain in place till further notice. The militants also blocked roads in Kabal sub-division, Chota Kalam, Ningwalai and other mountainous areas with huge boulders and tree trunks suspending traffic on the Matta-Mingora road. Muslim Khan, spokesman for the local Taliban, told Associated Press that only five militants had been killed in the clashes and claimed that they had killed more than 30 soldiers. "The morale of our Taliban is high and security forces are retreating in several areas," he claimed. He said the militants were fighting in self-defence and blamed the Government for "not honouring" the May 2008 peace agreement. "If the Government doesn’t announce a formal end to this deal, neither will we," Khan said. Talks, for the moment, were out of question, he added.

But the militants demanded safe passage and one of them hurled a grenade on the villagers to break the siege. The villagers subsequently opened fire, killing the militants four of whom were identified as Azeem Khan, Usman Ghani, Behran and Rahman Said. District Police Officer Mohamad Khaliq told journalists that the group was involved in attacks on a police mobile in Pir Baba and a police post in Kingar Galay. 32 persons, including seven policemen, were killed and 55 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the emergency ward of the District Headquarters Hospital in Dera Ismail Khan on August 19, Dawn reported. The attack was carried out when a large number of people had gathered there to protest against the murder of the local Shia leader Basit Ali earlier in the day. Attacked by a gunman near the Faqirni Gate, he was brought to the hospital where he died. Police said the 20 year-old suicide bomber blew himself up in the presence of police personnel who were trying to control the crowd. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack. TTP spokesman Maulvi Omar told Dawn they had targeted police and other Government officials and "did not intend to attack any specific religious sect (the Shia)." He said suicide attacks would continue till the military operations in Bajaur and Swat were stopped. The explosion took place amid tension between the Sunni and Shia communities in the region that has spawned several targeted killings in recent weeks. "The motive behind the blast appeared to be sectarian and Shia protesters were the apparent target," said a police official.

Ten army soldiers, seven policemen, 50 militants and a number of civilians were killed in a suicide attack on a police station and the subsequent military operation in Swat on August 23, Dawn reported. A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden jeep into the Charbagh police station at 7.45am (PST), killing four policemen and three civilians. 20 others were wounded. About 100kg of explosives were reportedly used in the attack. Military spokesman in Swat, Major Nasir Ali, told Dawn that soon after the suicide attack, security forces (SFs), backed by helicopter gunships, targeted militants’ hideouts in the valley, killing 50 Taliban militants, including their top commanders and foreigners. Ten army soldiers were killed and seven others injured in the fighting and three army vehicles were damaged. Several militant hideouts, including their command and control centre in Kabal, were destroyed. Major Nasir said the operation would continue till all objectives were achieved and the government’s writ was restored. However, the Taliban dismissed the military version, claiming in turn that they had killed 33 SF personnel. Spokesman Muslim Khan said that the Taliban had carried out the suicide attack in reaction to the killing of 14 militants in Doaba in the Hangu district on August 22. He said, “It is only a beginning and more attacks will come if the operation is not stopped in Swat.”

13 more persons were killed in continuing violence in the Swat district of the NWFP on August 24 while two more bodies were retrieved from the rubble of the Charbagh police post, blown up in a suicide attack on August 23, The News reported. Tension prevailed in the Kabal sub-division where the security forces (SFs), backed by gunship helicopters and artillery, carried out a daylong operation against militants. The military said that it had destroyed the centre, which served as one of the militants’ main command and control, logistic-cum-training and launching pads for terrorist activities and killed about 10-15 foreign militants, including Chechens, Uzbeks and Tajiks. According to the military, the slain foreigners belonged to Tahir Yuldeshev’s Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU). "We have credible information about the killing of 10-15 foreign militants out of the 45 killed on Saturday," the ISPR spokesman in Swat, Nasir Ali, told The News. He claimed most parts of Kabal had been cleared of the militants and action would continue till the elimination or eviction of the militants in other parts. However, a spokesman for the Swat unit of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Muslim Khan, rejected the military claim about the killing of foreign militants as baseless. He also disputed the claim about the killing of 45-50 militants in Kabal as unfounded and said instead 30 corpses of the security forces personnel were lying scattered in Kabal. The spokesman also asked parents and other relatives of soldiers to stop their loved ones from coming to Swat for taking part in the military operation in the valley or no "requests" of their relatives after their arrest would be accepted.

At least 25 militants, including two Taliban commanders, were killed in an air strike on militant hideouts in the Swat valley of the NWFP on August 29, Daily Times reported. A private jail and an ammunition depot of militants were among the air strike targets. A military spokesman in Swat told AFP that "a core of militants" had perished in the operation. "Their command and communications structure has also been destroyed. This was their key area where they had set up ammunition depots, which were also demolished… This strike was carried out after intelligence that top Taliban cleric Mullah Fazlullah was hiding there," the security official said, but he was unable to confirm if the main target was among the dead, according to Dawn. Military spokesman in Swat Major Nasir Ali told Dawn: "Ammunition dumps in the Peuchar area have been blown up in the heavy bombing. Smoke is billowing from the targeted site." Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said Taliban commander Mufti Saeedur Rehman and local journalist Abdul Aziz Shaheen, who was abducted two days ago, were also killed in the attack on the private jail. The spokesman claimed that 39 Government officials were also in the jail. He said the security forces (SFs) targeted 15 locations in the Matta sub-division of Swat, adding that Taliban leader Fazlullah was safe.

One militant jumped from the vehicle outside the FC post, while the other struck the vehicle against the main gate of the post after breaking through the barriers. Meanwhile, the FC troops opened fire on the vehicle, which subsequently exploded, killing the would-be bomber and three civilians. The security forces (SFs) claimed to have killed about 30 militants and wounded 35 others in a ground assault backed by gunship helicopters in the militants-infested Koza Bandai area of Swat Valley in the NWFP on September 3, The News reported. There were also reports about five civilian casualties, including four women, besides injuries to scores of others. Two SF personnel were reportedly killed and four others sustained injuries. SFs launched a ground assault in Koza Bandai, the native village of the Swat Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan, at dawn on September 3 to clear the area of the militants. A Mingora-based military spokesman, Major Nasir Ali, told The News that 25 to 30 militants were killed and 30 to 35 were injured in the attack that was backed by gunship helicopters. He claimed that the militants had been flushed out of the area but "some pockets of resistance were still there," which, he added, "would be mopped up in the next stage of the operation". Giving details, Major Ali said militants had established themselves in the village and made the civilian population hostage. The area, he added, was a stronghold of the miscreants, which served as a launching pad for their terrorist activities in and around the suburbs of Mingora, the district headquarters of Swat. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan said the SFs had destroyed 200 houses in the operation at Koza Bandai.

One Arab, two Turkmen and a local militant were killed in the pre-dawn attack. Janikhel is adjacent to North Waziristan where drones often fly and hit targets. An AFP report added that a senior security official in provincial capital Peshawar said that a major Arab al Qaeda operative was among six militants killed in the overnight missile strike. Security sources identified the militant as Abdullah Azam Al-Saudi, a senior al Qaeda member who, they said, American intelligence officials had identified as the main link between al Qaeda’s senior command and Taliban networks in the Pakistani border region. "He was the man coordinating between Al Qaeda and Taliban commanders on this side of the border, and also involved in recruiting and training fighters," an unnamed official said.

Five suspected militants were killed when a roadside explosion destroyed their vehicle in the Tiarza area of South Waziristan on November 27-evening, Dawn reported. Local people claimed that suspected militants belonging to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of Baitullah Mehsud were traveling in a vehicle when it hit a roadside landmine at Tiarza, around 25 kilometers north of Wana. Locals suspect that relations between the groups of Baitullah Mehsud and deceased militant commander Abdullah Mehsud soured during last couple of days, resulting in this incident. Earlier, a pamphlet carrying a message purportedly written by Qari Zainuddin Mehsud, the chief of Abdullah Mehsud’s Group, were distributed in Wana. In the said pamphlets, certain charges were leveled against Baitullah Mehsud accusing him of the killing other militant commanders and tribal elders. The pamphlet states that the activities of Baitullah Mehsud were aimed at defaming Islam and these were never part of a Holy war. The pamphlet also denounced suicide bombings and accused Baitullah Mehsud of orchestrating them.

According to Dawn, three women and a boy of a family were killed and six persons, including four women, were injured when a rocket hit a house in Darra Adamkhel in the NWFP on December 31. Officials said the rocket fired from some location in the hills near the town blew up the house, killing the three women and the boy on the spot. Six other members of the family were injured.
