At least ten people were killed and more than 60 others were injured in the evening of January 16 when a bomb exploded at a Tablighi Markaz (religious centre) on Pajaggi Road in Peshawar (Peshawar District), the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reports Dawn. Eyewitnesses said the bomb exploded at Tablighi Markaz run by the Tableeghi Jamaat, just before Maghrib (Evening) prayers. Around a thousand people were gathered at the seminary for a Shab-i-Juma (Thursday) congregation when the bomb ripped through the centre. Shafqat Malik, a senior official of the bomb disposal squad, said the bomb was planted inside a canister of ghee (cooking oil). “Around five kilograms of explosive material was used in the blast, which was detonated through a timed device,” he said. Two more bombs diffused at blast site by the bomb disposal squad by applying water charge.

At least 20 soldiers were killed and another 30 were injured when a bomb ripped through a military convoy in the Bannu Town (Bannu District) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 8:45 am on January 19, reports Daily Times. “A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device caused the blast,” a senior military official said. The convoy was about to leave for the Razmak town in North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) when the blast hit one of the civilian vehicles hired to move troops. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘spokesman’ Shahidullah Shahid claiming responsibility, said, “It was part of our fight against a secular system. We will carry out more such attacks in future.” He added that the TTP were seeking revenge for the deaths of their former ‘chief’ Hakimullah Mehsud and ‘deputy chief’ Waliur Rehman – both killed in US drone attacks.

At least six persons were killed and eight injured on January 23 when a bomb exploded in a vehicle at a car workshop near Scheme Chowk area of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, reports Dawn. The bomber was believed to have been targeting a group of refugees from Tirah Valley who had gone to a government-run camp in the Arbab Niaz Stadium to fill out paperwork ahead of their journey home. The suicide bomber first opened fire at the Police guarding the registration point for the IDPs from Tirah Valley before blowing himself up. “It was a suicide attack,” Police official Najeebur Rehman said adding that around 10 kilograms of explosives were used. Senior Police official Faisal Mukhtar said the bomber blew himself up near a small mosque inside the stadium and the dead included one Khasadar (Tribal Policeman) personnel. The blast caused one of mosque’s walls to fall down.

The sources said the Police were tipped off about the presence of militants in the Katkala and Shoprang areas. A Police party reached the area and launched a search operation to locate the militants. The militants attacked the Police and killed three cops identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Waris Khan and constables Taj Muhammad and Ghani Rehman in the clash. Station House Officer of Jawar Police Station Noorul Anwar sustained injuries in the clash.
