Seven persons, including three children and a woman, were killed and 10 others injured when a high-intensity bomb exploded near the Municipal Committee Office in Gujrat, on August 11. Reports said the bomb was planted under the seat of a vehicle. A senior government official said the bomb was a local made device. Emergency has been declared in the area and security arrangements have been beefed up at all public places of the city. The city police chief said, "It is the most brutal act of terrorism. We are trying to arrest the culprits, who appear to be well-trained terrorists.''

Police sources said that the convoy was escorting a business man, arrested on suspicion of abducting a business rival. All the unidentified assailants managed to escape. The arrested business man managed to escape the attack, sustaining minor injuries. He had escaped an earlier attack on February 21, 2001, in which five people were injured within the premises of a local Karachi court.

Pakistani news reports quoting official sources have indicated that those killed in the blast were carrying the bomb to another place for terrorist activity. Koh-i-Saafi area, the site of the explosion is reportedly being used as a training facility for sectarian terrorism. Sources added that one of the deceased was allegedly providing terrorist training secretly to the people at an isolated place in Kurram agency. Ten persons belonging to the Kabashkel tribe have been arrested so far in connection with the blast.

According to Pakistani media reports, approximately 15 persons, including six security force personnel, were killed on December 19 when Al Qaeda terrorists, being transported to Kohat by Pakistani security agencies, seized weapons and opened fire in the Kurram Agency area. Seven Al Qaeda cadres were also killed and six Pakistani nationals injured in the encounter. According to an official press release, 156 Al Qaeda terrorists arrested by the law enforcement agencies at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Kurram Agency were being transported to Kohat in three buses and two trucks. The captives of a bus reportedly snatched weapons from some of the security force personnel and attempted to take control of the bus. Consequent to the encounter, 20 Al Qaeda terrorists also managed to escape from the site. Official sources said the arrested terrorists are nationals of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Tunisia, Turkey, Algeria, Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Tajikistan, Iraqi, Sudan, Syria, Egypt and Morocco. Also among them is a French national of Arab origin identified as Abde Aziz Talabi and another Arab with a Swedish passport identified as Mehdi Mohammad Ghazali. They are reported to be staunch supporters of Osama bin Laden. The Arab nationals, officials added, had escaped from the Tora Bora area of Afghanistan and were arrested in Ziaran area of Kurram Agency.

Nine persons including the chief of the local Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) were killed and 11 others were injured as three unidentified terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on a congregation at the Hayat-e-Islam mosque in Lahore on March 12. According to official sources, the attack was carried out in the most sensitive locality of Lahore where agencies like Garrison Security Force, Military Police and others are located. Sources also said that the attack was carried out despite tight security measures adopted in view of the presence of Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf in the city. The mosque is being administered by the SSP. The terrorists managed to escape from the site of the incident. Police sources reported that the attack could be in retaliation for the March 4 sectarian violence at Sheikhupura in which 13 persons were killed. Meanwhile, an SSP spokesperson, Qazi Bahaur Rehman, alleged that the Tehreek-e-Jaferia Pakistan (TJP) was responsible for the massacre.

At least three people were killed and several others injured in a clash between protesters and security forces near Dera Ghazi Khan on the eve of general strike. Protesters stopped a train near Shahdan Lond Railway Station, 45km away from Dera City. Police reached the spot while reinforcements were rushed in. In the events that unfolded, three people were killed in firing by the security forces. An angry mob subsequently indulged in an arson spree causing widespread damage. Besides, they had also taken hostage four policemen. Reports of protest were reported from several other parts of Pakistan.
