Similarly, three people were shot dead by armed rival groups in the areas of Balishkhel, Sadda, Karman, Para Chamkani, Pewar and Teri Mengal. According to Daily Times, at least 20 persons were killed as fighting erupted between activists of the militant group Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and Kooki Khel tribesmen of the Khyber Agency in FATA on April 16. "The two sides have started an exchange of fire," Rasool Khan, Assistant Political Agent of the Jamrud subdivision, confirmed to Daily Times. A tribal elder from Jamrud claimed that the Government had done nothing to avert the clash, despite knowing of hostilities on both sides. Tensions in the Jamrud subdivision surfaced after Kooki Khel tribe refused to surrender to the 30-point agenda of LI. The groups are reported to have targeted each other's positions in the hills using rockets and mortar shells, Geo News channel reported. LI is lead by cleric Mangal Bagh, who follows the puritanical Deobandi form of Sunni Islam. He has reportedly attempted to enforce a strict Taliban-style Islam in the region, provoking the tribesmen. "We can’t implement the Mangal Bagh brand of Islam on ourselves and our people," elders from the Katya Khel sub-tribe of the Kooki Khel tribe, gathered at a meeting, told Daily Times on April 15. They said they were "as much Muslims as Mangal Bagh and his men," adding, "He should not teach us Islam." Representing the sub-tribe Haji Shamshad, Haji Muhammad Ashraf, and Haji Sarfaraz said they were being asked to hoist black flags on their houses and surrender before the LI cadres. "All their demands are absurd as we’ve already taken action against those involved in smuggling, the hashish trade, kidnappings for ransom, and murders," they said.

Mardan district Superintendent of Police Ijaz Abid said the bomb, planted in a car parked near the police station, detonated around 6am, killing two civilians and a police official, and injuring around 17 policemen and nine civilians. He also said that nearly 35 to 40 kilograms of explosives were used and the police station and adjacent shops were badly damaged. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. "This attack was carried out by our mujahideen to avenge the earlier killing of one of our commanders by police in Mardan," TTP spokesman Maulana Omar told Reuters by telephone.

Three Taliban and four suspected criminals were killed and several others, including women and children, injured in a clash in the Dadukhel area of the Mohmand Agency in FATA on April 26. Assistant Political Agent Yakaghund Shahidullah Khan told Dawn that the casualties’ figure could be increased because firing which started in the evening continued till late night. According to sources, people belonging to the local Taliban besieged a house where they alleged some 10 to 12 people were planning for some criminal activities. An exchange of fire took place in which three people from Taliban’s side — one of them identified as Zahid Khan of Michni — and four from other side — two of them identified as Noor Sham and Amjad — were killed. Rockets and Kalashnikovs were used in the fighting, sources added.

At least seven persons were killed and more than 20 injured in fighting between the militants and security forces (SFs) in the Bajaur Agency on August 10, as Taliban occupied a 15-kilometre stretch of land from agency headquarters Khar to the Jaar area, Daily Times reported. Fighter aircraft and helicopter gun-ships targeted militant hideouts in the agency after paramilitary troops withdrew from the Taliban stronghold of Loyesam following three days of fierce clashes. Two helicopters and two fighter jets targeted Taliban hideouts in Loyesam, Bando, Rashakai, Tang, Jaar, Haji Lawang, Yousafabad and Charmang areas until 4pm (PST) on August 10. Approximately 40 houses were destroyed during the bombing. Taliban militants reportedly attacked the bombers with anti-aircraft guns in the Carela and Tang Khata areas. Hundreds of armed Taliban militants, meanwhile, dug trenches in Loyesam along an eight-kilometer stretch of the strategic road leading to Peshawar, capital of the NWFP. Taliban also took control of temporary check-posts in Yousafabad, Haji Lawang, and Jaar abandoned by the SFs. They also blew up an abandoned check-post in Jarmola Kilay. Witnesses said Taliban dug trenches just a furlong away from the Bajaur Scouts headquarters in Khar and occupied a bridge in Jaar. Witnesses said most of the Bajaur Agency is now under Taliban control. Local sources said 90,000 local residents had emigrated from the area, mostly to the neighbouring Dir district. NGOs are reported to have set up camps in the Munda area, between the Dir and Bajaur. An official of Inter-Services Public Relations said the Pakistan Army was not taking part in the operation and therefore, they had no details on the losses suffered by the militants, The News reported. He said the paramilitary Frontier Corps in consultation with the local political administration was conducting the operation against militants in which fighter aircraft and gunship helicopters were being used to target the positions of militants.

Security forces killed approximately 50 Taliban militants in fresh clashes in the Bajaur Agency of the FATA, taking the death toll to nearly 160 in five days of fighting, Daily Times reported. "Helicopter gun-ships pounded positions of the militants in Bajaur and killed about 50 of them," an unnamed security official told Reuters. There were no casualties from the security forces, he claimed. "Some of the bombs dropped by jets on suspected militants’ hideouts in Tauheedabad and Damadola villages also hit many houses killing six civilians and wounding 12 others," the security official told AFP. Civilian casualties were also reported in the Charmang area of Bajaur and the Manja area of Khar. According to The News, at least 13 members of a family, including women and children, were killed as a result of bombing at an unnamed village in the Bajaur Agency. Residents said the fighting erupted at 1am (PST) on August 11 and bodies were scattered across the farmland 20 kilometers east of Khar, the agency headquarters. According to security officials, the fresh clashes erupted after militants attacked a security forces’ convoy in the Sikandaro area of Khar and the Tor Ghundi fort.

12 militants, including three Turkmen, some Arabs and Waziri tribal fighters, were killed and several others injured when an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fired four Hellfire missiles on Shnawana village in South Waziristan (SW), along the border with Afghanistan on August 12-night. Sources informed The News from Angoor Adda, a border town between the SW and Afghanistan's Paktika province, that two pilot-less US planes were seen flying over the area during the attack on the village. They said four missiles were fired on the village in which 12 suspected militants were killed and several others injured. A house of pro-government tribal militant commander Abdur Rahman was destroyed in the attack in which Rahman and his brother Mohammad Islam died. According to residents, two US planes were hovering over the area since August 12-evening in the run-up to the drone attack. The planes fired four Hellfire missiles at around 10 pm at the compound where local and foreign militants were reportedly hiding. In Kabul, the US military said the missiles were not fired by either NATO’s International Security Assistance Force or the US-led coalition. "This is not true. We have no reports of missiles being fired into Pakistan," US-led coalition spokesman Lieutenant Nathan Perry told AFP.

A senior al Qaeda operative and 17 other militants were killed and several others sustained injuries when low-flying helicopters bombed their positions in the Bajaur Agency of the FATA, Dawn reported. Sources said Abu Saeed al-Masri alias Mustafa Mohammad Ahmad was killed in the air strike. The Egyptian-born Abu Saeed was reported to be a senior member of the Majlis-i-Shura and financial chief of al Qaeda. They said that Cobra helicopters precisely targeted militants’ positions in Shahnari, Haji Lawang, Ragha Dagg and Takht areas where security forces had been using air power since August 8. The helicopters attacked militants’ hideouts in Shahnari, killing 13 Taliban militants. They also hit four vehicles in Takht, killing five militants and injuring three others. However, a spokesman for the Tehrik-i-Taliban denied that any foreign militant had been killed, AFP reported. "I strongly contradict reports that Abu Saeed al-Masri was killed in Bajaur. There are no foreigners," Omar said. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said the security agencies had intelligence on presence of top al Qaeda operative Abu Mustafa Al Yazid but his death could not be confirmed as yet by "contacts on the ground", Daily Times reported.

Six Pakistan Air Force (PAF) personnel and seven civilians were killed and 14 persons were wounded when a car bomb exploded near a bridge on the main Peshawar-Kohat Road in the southern part of Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on August 12-morning, Dawn reported. The explosion occurred when a van carrying PAF personnel was going from the Badbher PAF base to Peshawar. Police said it was not yet clear whether it was a case of suicide attack or of a bomb detonated by remote control. Among the dead were a six-year-old girl and two women who were going to a wedding ceremony. An unnamed police official told Dawn that the attack could be a revenge action for the military operation in Swat, Bajaur and other tribal areas. Bomb disposal personnel said the explosives used for the blast weighed over 20 kilograms. According to BBC, Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar claimed responsibility for the attack and said it was in response to military operations against militants in the Bajaur Agency. Pakistan Air Force fighter aircraft and military gunship helicopters continued targeting suspected hideouts of militants in the Bajaur Agency, killing 21 more people, including three civilians, and injuring several others, The News reported. Official and tribal sources said that fighter aircraft and the Pakistan Army Cobra gunship choppers heavily bombarded suspected militant positions and hideouts in various parts of Bajaur Agency, including Pashat, Naraza and Mulla Said Banda in Salarzai sub-division and Inam Khwaro and Damadola in the Mamond sub-division. The officials claimed 12 militants were killed in the air strikes. In Jar Kalley of Utmankhel sub-division, a group of militants sitting on the roadside to target the troops through IEDs were targeted by gunship choppers that killed six militants. In Pashat village, three tribesmen, including an elder, were killed when his house came under attack from a warplane. There were complaints by the fleeing tribal populace that fighter aircraft and military choppers were mostly bombing civilian populations and villages rather than the militants still moving and operating freely in their strongholds in Mamond, Salarzai, Utmankhel and Inayat Kalley. Residents also complained that despite heavy bombing by the security forces for the past several days, the militants were still occupying roadside checkpoints and security posts vacated by the paramilitary Bajaur Scouts along the border with Afghanistan.

32 persons, including seven policemen, were killed and 55 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near the emergency ward of the District Headquarters Hospital in Dera Ismail Khan on August 19, Dawn reported. The attack was carried out when a large number of people had gathered there to protest against the murder of the local Shia leader Basit Ali earlier in the day. Attacked by a gunman near the Faqirni Gate, he was brought to the hospital where he died. Police said the 20 year-old suicide bomber blew himself up in the presence of police personnel who were trying to control the crowd. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack. TTP spokesman Maulvi Omar told Dawn they had targeted police and other Government officials and "did not intend to attack any specific religious sect (the Shia)." He said suicide attacks would continue till the military operations in Bajaur and Swat were stopped. The explosion took place amid tension between the Sunni and Shia communities in the region that has spawned several targeted killings in recent weeks. "The motive behind the blast appeared to be sectarian and Shia protesters were the apparent target," said a police official.

Twelve persons, most of them alleged foreign fighters, were killed and five others sustained injuries when a US Predator fired two Hellfire missiles on a house in the Zari Noor village of South Waziristan on August 20, The News reported. Military Spokesman Major General Athar Abbas confirmed the incident but said he would not confirm whether it was a missile or rocket attack. He said he had heard that 8-12 people had been killed in the explosions. The military spokesman, however, denied reports that a US Predator had fired Hellfire missiles on the Pakistani territory. Tribal sources said a house and Hujra (male guesthouse) owned by a local tribal elder, Mohammad Yaqub Mughalkhel Wazir, were hit by the missiles. "Before the attack at around 4 pm, a black colour plane was flying at a low altitude over the village and almost half-an-hour later another white colour plane fired two missiles that razed the buildings," said a local tribesman Mohammad Siyar Wazir. Militants affiliated to ‘commander’ Maulvi Nazeer reportedly cordoned off the village and the damaged buildings soon after the attack and barred the tribesmen from going to the incident site. Tribal sources based in Wana said the majority of those killed in the air strikes were reported to be Arab fighters staying as guests with the Wazir tribal elder.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up on August 21 at the gates of the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) in the high security cantonment town of Wah in Rawalpindi District of Punjab, killing at least 70 persons in what was described as the deadliest attack on a military installation in the country’s history, Dawn reported. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack. The POF at Wah is a cluster of about 20 industrial units producing artillery, tank and anti-aircraft ammunition for the Pakistani armed forces, according to Daily Times. It employs around 25,000 to 30,000 workers. The bombers blew themselves up outside two gates of the factory at 2.35pm (PST) when hundreds of workers were leaving after a shift change. Most of the victims were civilian workers. The first explosion occurred outside the main gate and it was followed by an equally powerful blast at gate No.1 located close to a busy market. Witnesses said the bombers were on foot and they exploded themselves within a minute of each other. The death toll could increase as 35 of the injured were in critical condition, hospital sources said. Security force personnel found a ‘suicide vest’ in the toilet of a nearby mosque and arrested a suspected suicide bomber, Hameedullah of Khyber Agency, from the Mall Road. According to sources, police arrested three suspects. One of them was said to be "covering up" the suicide bombers. A belt filled with explosives was also found in a mosque, the sources said. Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar claimed responsibility of the suicide attacks saying that they had been carried out in retaliation for military operations in Bajaur and Swat. Talking to Dawn, he warned that such attacks would also be carried out in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Bannu, Kohat and Swat.

Ten army soldiers, seven policemen, 50 militants and a number of civilians were killed in a suicide attack on a police station and the subsequent military operation in Swat on August 23, Dawn reported. A suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden jeep into the Charbagh police station at 7.45am (PST), killing four policemen and three civilians. 20 others were wounded. About 100kg of explosives were reportedly used in the attack. Military spokesman in Swat, Major Nasir Ali, told Dawn that soon after the suicide attack, security forces (SFs), backed by helicopter gunships, targeted militants’ hideouts in the valley, killing 50 Taliban militants, including their top commanders and foreigners. Ten army soldiers were killed and seven others injured in the fighting and three army vehicles were damaged. Several militant hideouts, including their command and control centre in Kabal, were destroyed. Major Nasir said the operation would continue till all objectives were achieved and the government’s writ was restored. However, the Taliban dismissed the military version, claiming in turn that they had killed 33 SF personnel. Spokesman Muslim Khan said that the Taliban had carried out the suicide attack in reaction to the killing of 14 militants in Doaba in the Hangu district on August 22. He said, “It is only a beginning and more attacks will come if the operation is not stopped in Swat.”

13 more persons were killed in continuing violence in the Swat district of the NWFP on August 24 while two more bodies were retrieved from the rubble of the Charbagh police post, blown up in a suicide attack on August 23, The News reported. Tension prevailed in the Kabal sub-division where the security forces (SFs), backed by gunship helicopters and artillery, carried out a daylong operation against militants. The military said that it had destroyed the centre, which served as one of the militants’ main command and control, logistic-cum-training and launching pads for terrorist activities and killed about 10-15 foreign militants, including Chechens, Uzbeks and Tajiks. According to the military, the slain foreigners belonged to Tahir Yuldeshev’s Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU). "We have credible information about the killing of 10-15 foreign militants out of the 45 killed on Saturday," the ISPR spokesman in Swat, Nasir Ali, told The News. He claimed most parts of Kabal had been cleared of the militants and action would continue till the elimination or eviction of the militants in other parts. However, a spokesman for the Swat unit of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Muslim Khan, rejected the military claim about the killing of foreign militants as baseless. He also disputed the claim about the killing of 45-50 militants in Kabal as unfounded and said instead 30 corpses of the security forces personnel were lying scattered in Kabal. The spokesman also asked parents and other relatives of soldiers to stop their loved ones from coming to Swat for taking part in the military operation in the valley or no "requests" of their relatives after their arrest would be accepted.

The front wall of the school and an adjoining market and were destroyed and a mosque and several houses were damaged. Police said two Policemen, a volunteer and five children were among the victims. The Swat unit of the Tehrik-i-Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said it had been carried out to avenge the killing of its six members in the area four months ago. The village has been under threat from militants since the formation of a tribal lashkar (militia) to combat militancy. Pakistan on December 30 suspended supplies to more than 65,000 NATO and United States troops in Afghanistan when Security Forces imposed curfew in and around Jamrud tehsil (revenue division) of Khyber Agency to initiate a military operation against the Taliban, Daily Times reported. Two militants were among five people killed on December 30 in the joint operation by military and paramilitary forces. "We have launched crackdown against people creating disturbances, and army, paramilitary and levy force is jointly conducting the operation," Khyber Chief Administrator Tariq Hayat told reporters in Peshawar. Hayat also said the operation was targeting six Taliban-linked organizations. "This operation will continue as long as all targets are achieved," he stated. According to him, the operation was aimed at putting a stop to both attacks on NATO supply vehicles and a spate of kidnappings for ransom in the FATA, where the Taliban and al Qaeda are active. Troops had already seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition in a raid on a warehouse in Jamrud, Hayat said, adding that a complete curfew had been imposed on the area, with paramilitary troops patrolling the streets. The early-dawn operation followed recent Taliban activities, which attempted to cut off supply lines to international forces in Afghanistan and threatened Peshawar’s security. "Helicopter gunships pounded suspected hideouts of the Taliban and their local facilitators while ground forces with tanks and heavy artillery provided backup," residents of Jamrud told Daily Times. Troops shelled Taliban strongholds in the Ghundi, Sakhipul, Tedi bazaar, Shah Zaman Kalay and Ghuriza areas of Jamrud. "Five people were killed," political administration officials said, but did not provide details. Local residents said three civilians, including a child, were killed in an area close to Tedi bazaar and Ghuriza by the shelling. Local residents said the militants put up little resistance to the operation. "There was some resistance by members of an organisation, but there was no resistance at all by the militants who appear to have left the area much earlier than the operation started," the residents said. Reuters reported NATO spokesman in Kabul Captain Mark Windsor as saying that the supply blockade "will not have a major impact, for it is temporary and we have stocks and supplies. Overall, it will be a good thing."

At least 10 suspected militants were killed in a missile strike on a house in South Waziristan early on February 28, according to Daily Times. The dead were believed to be of Pakistani and foreign origins, residents and officials said. The attack occurred at approximately 2AM in Kaloosha village, 10 kilometres west of Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan. "Nine militants were killed instantly while a wounded Punjabi militant passed away hours later in a local hospital," the residents said. Security officials also put the toll at 10. However, local news agencies reported that 13 people were killed in the attack and several others injured. It is the second such attack in the area after militant commander Nek Muhammad was killed in a missile attack in June 2004. Resident Sharifullah said three missiles hit the house of Afghan national Sheroo, who hailed from the Zalikhel tribe, which is allegedly harbouring foreign and local militants. "There was no immediate information about the presence of any high-value target," an unnamed official told AFP. Armed militants cordoned off the incident site after the missile strike, the residents said, adding that four unidentified ‘guests’ had arrived late on February 27 at the destroyed house. Army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas told AFP that the deaths were caused by explosive material stored in the house, adding that 10 to 12 people were killed in the blast. "As per our information it was an explosion caused by explosive material in the house." However, a security source based in Peshawar said that the missile was fired by a US drone at about 2am. A spokesman for the United States-led coalition force based in Afghanistan said it had "no reports" that either it or the separate North Atlantic Treaty Organisation-headed force were involved in the strike. Sources said that the militants belonged to the Abu Hamza group whose leader was said to be a follower of local militant commander Maulana Nazir, according to Dawn. Nazir won government’s support after launching an armed campaign against Uzbek militants in the Ahmadzai Wazir area in April 2007. A spokesman for Nazir denied the killing of Arabs or Turkmens in the attack and said that some Afghans had died. "They were common Afghans and had been living in the area for a few years." He claimed that missiles had been fired from Afghanistan.

40 people were killed and more than 75 others sustained injuries when a suicide bomber blew himself up at the funeral prayers of the slain Deputy Superintendent of Police (Lakki Marwat), Javed Iqbal Khan, in the Mingora city of Swat district on February 29-evening, The News reported. Among the dead were a son of the deceased police officer, Ghazan Khan, and the Station House Officer of Mingora police station Habib Jamal. Independent sources, however, put the death toll at 50, fearing that the number could rise as majority of the injured were in a critical condition. According to AFP, nearly 1,000 people were attending the funeral. Reuters quoted the number as 500, adding that most of the casualties were policemen. District Police Officer Waqif Khan said the bomber was among the people taking part in the funeral, Dawn reported. Residents of Mingora said that the blast occurred when the funeral concluded and the people had started to disperse. "A huge and deafening explosion rocked the school building when a police party had begun presenting guard of honour to the deceased," said Haji Dost Mohammad. Deputy Superintendent of Police Javed Iqbal, who died in a bomb blast along with three other policemen in the troubled southern Lakki Marwat district on February 29-morning, belonged to Makan Bagh in Mingora city.

"Soldiers put up a good fight, but couldn’t hold out for long in the face of an overwhelming militant force," a source said. The last distress radio message, according to him, was made at around 3am to the Ludda Fort, asking for artillery fire at the militants who had broken through the defences and begun pouring into the base. The military said on January 16 that 40 militants were killed in the gun battle. While 15 soldiers escaped and reached the Jandola Fort, the fate of the rest was not known, it stated.

12 people, including five militants, five civilians and two Pakistan Army soldiers, were killed while eight militants and four soldiers were injured in clashes between the security forces (SFs) and militants on January 28, according to The News. There were reports of heavy clashes between the two sides in various parts of the Mehsud-inhabited areas of South Waziristan such as Makin, Ladha, Torwam and Tiarza in which military authorities said militants suffered significant losses. Besides gunship choppers and artillery shelling on militants’ positions, the Army called two fighters which targeted the strongholds of Baitullah Mehsud’s militants in the Makin and Ladha towns. Military authorities said a number of militants were killed while their hideouts destroyed in the bombardment. The Army also reportedly fired mortar and artillery shells from military camps in Razmak and Jandola on the militants’ hide-outs in Kaza Panga, Dher Narai, Shaga, Treekh Narai, Wrasta Bazeena and Shaktoi areas in which officials said five militants were killed. They said intercepts from militants suggested that eight of their colleagues were wounded. In the Mohammad Nawaz Kot area near Makin, militants attacked a security post manned by the Pakistan Army soldiers. In the ensuing encounter, two soldiers died and four others were injured.

A missile apparently fired by a pilot-less plane hit a house in a village near Mir Ali in North Waziristan late on January 28-night, killing 15 people - 10 suspected militants, two women and three minors, according to The News. Intelligence sources said those killed also included Arab nationals but their identity was not known. A militant source told Daily Times by phone that five men "speaking the language of the holy Quran" were among the dead, suggesting that Arab militants were among the victims. The targeted house was in Khushali Torikhel, 12 kilometers south of Mir Ali town. The owner of the house, Madad Khan, believed to be a Taliban militant, survived the attack while his guests sleeping in the Hujra (male guesthouse) died in the missile strike at 1:15 am, and so did two women and three minors of his family. It was not clear where the missiles were fired from, Daily Times reported. Residents, however, claimed that an unmanned spy plane, of a type often used by US forces in Afghanistan, was involved in the attack. The plane is capable of firing missiles and taking photographs from a considerable altitude. "We recognise the sound and shape of the American drone and two such planes have been hovering in the sky since Monday afternoon, and people have seen them over Mir Ali and Miranshah," said local residents.

Senior al Qaeda commander Abu Laith Al-Libi has been killed in Pakistan, CNN quoted "a knowledgeable Western official and an unnamed military official" as saying, according to Daily Times. The 41-year-old Libyan was active in operational planning and training, and according to the US official, "not far below the importance of the top two al Qaeda leaders" – Osama bin Laden and Ayman Al-Zawahiri. He was placed on the US military’s most wanted list in 2006, behind Laden, Zawahiri and Taliban leader Mullah Omar. AP news agency said a Website used by militant groups carried a statement in the name of Al-Fajr, al Qaeda’s media wing, saying "he was martyred with a group of his brothers in the land of Muslim Pakistan." The statement was referring to a missile strike at Khushali Torikhel in North Waziristan on January 28. 10 militants, two women and three minors had died in the missile strike. However, a US military official with the Combined Joint Task Force-82, the anti-terror unit responsible for searching Libi in Afghanistan, told CNN he had no information on Al-Libi’s death, but added that CJTF-82 did not collect information from outside of Afghanistan and would be informed of targeted operations only "if the Pakistani military share that with us". AP said Pakistan’s Interior Ministry officials did not confirm Al-Libi’s death and were "still trying to gather details on the missile strike." Pakistani Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema told AFP that "We have no information of his killing."

Rival militants attacked offices of a pro-government militant, killing nine and wounding eight of his men on January 6- night, according to Dawn. The attackers first stormed the office of Maulana Nazir in Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, and killed three of his supporters and injured four others, sources said. The militants, reportedly equipped with rockets and heavy weapons, launched another attack on the office of Nazir’s close associate, Maulana Khanan, in Shakai town, killing six people and injuring five others. A spokesman for Maulana Nazir blamed Baitullah Mehsud’s supporters for the attack and asked all Mehsud tribesmen to leave the Wazir tribe-dominated areas to avoid bloodshed. "We suspect Baitullah and his Uzbek supporters for this gruesome attack which left nine Mujahideen dead," Lala Wazir said. A large number of attackers, he said, came from the Mehsud area at night and attacked the local peace committee offices in Wana and Shakai. Local people said that Nazir’s supporters later shot dead an associate of Baitullah Mehsud and captured four others in Wana. Maulana Nazir belongs to the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe and has great influence in the region and virtually controls Wana. His supporters, backed by security forces, had launched a drive against Uzbek militants in the area in April 2007. The week-long armed clashes between Nazir’s supporters and Uzbeks had left over 160 people dead. Sources said that the latest incident could trigger a tribal feud after Nazir asked tribesmen hailing from the Mehsud tribe to leave the Ahmadzai Wazir dominated areas by 8am on January 8.

The security forces retaliated and killed and injured several militants. The FC spokesman said he was unaware of the exact number of the militants’ causalities as they took the bodies of their dead and injured along with them before escaping. A large cache of heavy arms and ammunition, including antitank and antipersonnel mines, rockets, rocket launchers, detonators, found in the camps was seized.

A missile apparently fired from a Predator drone killed at least six persons on July 28 in a compound in South Waziristan near the Afghan border, Dawn reported. An unnamed security official said the strike might have killed a senior al Qaeda trainer known for his expertise in explosives and chemicals. The official put the death toll at 12. "Our report suggests that the missile strike might have killed Abu Khabab Al Misri, an Egyptian. But it remains unconfirmed," the official said. A resident of Wana said two missiles struck a seminary and an adjoining compound in the Zyara Leetha area of Azam Warsak early in the morning, killing six people and wounding a woman and her two children. A local militant commander, Maulvi Nazir, said the strike killed left seven persons, including the head of a seminary and students. However, military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said "There is a problem at the local level. We have not received a detailed report. No one has been able to reach there and get details of the information. Therefore, I cannot really make a comment". The 55-year-old Midhat Mursi As-Sayid Umar alias Abu Khabab was earlier reported to have been killed in a US missile strike in the Damadola area of Bajaur Agency in the FATA in Jan 2006. However, later reports showed that he was not among those killed. He was a trainer at an al Qaeda facility in Darunta near Jalalabad in Afghanistan in the late 1990s. A graduate in science from an Egyptian university, Abu Khabab was considered to be an expert in conventional explosives and some western media reports said he headed a project named Al Zabadi, or ‘curdled milk’, for making chemical and biological weapons. The US had offered a $5 million reward on information leading to his capture.

48 militants, including a commander, and five soldiers were killed and an unspecified number of people were injured as fierce clashes continued in the Swat Valley of the NWFP for the second consecutive day on July 30, The News reported. The fighting erupted on July 29 after the militants attacked a security post in their stronghold in the Matta sub-division and took about 25 security force (SF) personnel hostage. After the overnight targeting of various militants’ positions, the SFs, backed by gunship helicopters, carried out an operation and shelled suspected militant positions in several parts of the valley, including Peuchar, Namal, Ronial, Sarbanda and Chuprial that left 48 persons dead and as many injured. The Taliban militants also claimed killing 25 SF personnel, but the claim could not be confirmed independently. A military spokesman said in the daylong clashes with the militants, one officer, a junior officer and three soldiers were killed. The two sides clashed in the Sijbanr area of Matta in which, according to the military spokesman, approximately 25 militants were killed. In the Sarbanda area of Matta, hundreds of militants attacked the troops and claimed killing 30 SF personnel. The claim was rejected by the military, which said that only two officers and three soldiers were killed in the attack. Further, SFs also killed 12 militants and injured several others when they attacked the militants, who had laid siege to the Matta police station. The militants targeted the Wenai check-post with rockets and one militant was killed when the troops retaliated. Backed by gunship helicopters, the SFs also attacked suspected positions of the militants in the mountainous area of Peuchar, killing ‘commander’ Maulvi Hussain Ali alias Tor Mulla and 10 others. The attack also left six militants, including commander Nisar, injured. In the Jura area of Matta, shelling by the Army gunship helicopters injured 13 people. In the Shangwatai area of Matta, two persons were killed as the peach orchard, they were working in, was targeted by military gunship helicopters. In addition, approximately 24 mortar shells landed in Nihag Darra area on the Swat-Dir border injuring two persons. The militants also blew up a Government hotel in Malam Jabba, which they had torched earlier, and an Army rest house in the Charbagh sub-division. They also blew up a Government girls’ school in Gulibagh and bridges in the Gurra, Ronial and other areas of Matta. The local military officials said curfew across the Swat Valley would remain in place till further notice. The militants also blocked roads in Kabal sub-division, Chota Kalam, Ningwalai and other mountainous areas with huge boulders and tree trunks suspending traffic on the Matta-Mingora road. Muslim Khan, spokesman for the local Taliban, told Associated Press that only five militants had been killed in the clashes and claimed that they had killed more than 30 soldiers. "The morale of our Taliban is high and security forces are retreating in several areas," he claimed. He said the militants were fighting in self-defence and blamed the Government for "not honouring" the May 2008 peace agreement. "If the Government doesn’t announce a formal end to this deal, neither will we," Khan said. Talks, for the moment, were out of question, he added.

A suspected suicide bomber blew up his car outside the Danish embassy in Islamabad on June 2, killing at least eight persons and injuring 30 others, Daily Times reported. The Danish Foreign minister said a Pakistani cleaner employed at the embassy and a Danish citizen of Pakistani origin had died and three other local employees were hurt, but the embassy’s four Danish staffers were unharmed. There was no claim of responsibility for the blast, but officials said it was likely linked to anger over blasphemous caricatures, which were recently reprinted by Danish newspapers. The explosion, which occurred at around 1.05pm, damaged the main gate of the embassy and the front of the building. It also left a six-foot deep crater in the road. Windows were also broken in the nearby home of the Indian High Commissioner. Anjum Masood, a manager for the UN-funded group Devolution Trust for Community Empowerment, said dozens of its 100 employees were wounded, mostly by flying glass. Inspector General of Police, Syed Asghar Raza Gardezi, said that it was a suicide attack. Police sources said the car bore a red number plate used only by diplomatic corps, saying this had allowed the vehicle to bypass the police picket set up near the embassy. Interior Secretary Kamal Shah told reporters that initial investigations had revealed the amount of explosives used was in excess of 15 kilograms.

At least 20 people were killed as several missiles hit a house in South Waziristan on March 16-afternoon, Daily Times reported. Seven missiles landed on the house of Noorullah in Toog village, located four kilometers south of Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan. Local journalist Sailab Mehsud said 20 people were killed and five others wounded in the missile attack. He said all those who died were Arabs and Turkmen, who had gathered at the house when the attack occurred. It could not be confirmed where the missiles came from, but locals told Mehsud they were fired from two unmanned aircrafts. Local people said that the house had been rented out to ‘non-local’ people about a year ago and about 20 non-local people lived there, according to Dawn. None of those killed and wounded included high-value targets, local residents and security officials said. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said there were reports of blasts and some casualties in the area and the military was checking. He added that Pakistani forces had not carried out any operation in the area and he did not know who had carried out the strike or what type of weapon was used. Major Chris Belcher, a US military spokesman in Afghanistan, said coalition forces conducted an operation in the Paktika province, which lies just across the border from South Waziristan. He said he had no information about the Pakistan strike and that he doubted the two incidents were related.

A curfew has been imposed in the Hangu district of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) province after clashes erupted between Shia and Sunni Muslims during a Nauroz (Persian New Year festival) procession on March 21, leaving four dead and 28 others injured, reports Daily Times. Two of the injured are said to be in critical condition. The violence erupted after members of the Shia community of the region came under fire as they hoisted a flag on a mosque to mark Nauroz. Locals said the Nauroz celebrations were going on peacefully at a madrassa (Seminary) when they were fired upon with rockets and mortar shells, APP reported. “We have clamped an indefinite curfew and summoned troops to restore peace. The situation is tense,” local police officer Akbar Ali told AFP after the incident. He said sporadic firing continued despite the curfew. The district co-ordination officer of the region also called a jirga (council) that successfully negotiated a truce between Sunnis and Shias of the area. The cease-fire is to last five months. Each sect has deposited PKR 1 million with the jirga as a form of surety bond.

According to The News, at least 10 people were killed and six others injured when dozens of armed men belonging to the Khyber Agency-based Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) attacked Shiekhan village on the outskirts of Peshawar, capital of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) with rocket launchers and other sophisticated weapons before bulldozing a shrine and four houses on March 3. Some sources put the death toll at 16 and said 15 of the deceased were villagers. Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse hundreds of angry villagers who blocked the main Bara Road to register their protest against the LeI militants. "Dozens of armed men of Mangal Bagh-led militant organisation attacked Shiekhan village at around 11.30 am. The villagers, mostly unarmed and unprepared, resisted the assault that resulted into a fierce clash between the rival groups," said a police official. While the militants used rockets and mortar shells besides machineguns and AK-47 assault rifles, the villagers retaliated with rifles. The heavy fighting that continued for hours restricted hundreds of villagers in the nearby areas to their houses. Students in the local schools were also confined to their institutions. Before fleeing to their stronghold Bara in the Khyber Agency of FATA, the LeI militants bulldozed four houses and set ablaze a shrine after razing its building. The Mangal Bagh-led LeI group had reportedly warned the villagers against the stay of a saint, Pir Abdul Hakeem, in the Dani Baba Shrine. The saint is among six people, including a woman, who sustained injuries in the attack. The attack is the first by LeI in the settled part of Peshawar. Mangal Bagh, the head of the LeI, has been enforcing his own brand of Islam in his areas for about two years, according to Dawn. Locals told Daily Times that Shiekhan is home to supporters of Pir Saifur Rehman, who was expelled from Bara in 2007 under immense pressure from the LeI.

At least 12 militants, including some foreigners, were killed on May 14 in a suspected United States missile strike on two houses in the Damadola area of Bajaur Agency in the FATA, Daily Times reported. Two missiles, apparently fired by a US drone aircraft, demolished a house and a compound used by suspected al Qaeda militants, an unnamed official told AFP. Residents said they saw drones flying in the area beforehand, AP reported. They said that Taliban militants cordoned off the site soon after the attack. Taliban spokesman Maulana Omar told Daily Times that ‘commander’ Maulana Obaidullah’s house had been targeted. He said most of the house’s residents, including women and children, were killed. He said the Taliban believed that the US army had initiated the attack to undermine peace efforts, adding, "We will avenge this but will continue talks with the Government." Separately, however, military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said that there was no army in the area and he had no knowledge of any missile strike. The missile attack is reported to have triggered a chain of explosions, apparently caused by a stockpile of explosives, according to Dawn. Several people are thought to have been injured, but not much information came out of the area since militants prevented local people from undertaking any rescue operation. This is the third missile strike by American planes on Damadola. 18 persons, including 14 members of one family, were killed when a residential compound was hit on January 13, 2006. It was hit again by a pilotless predator on October 30, 2006, killing 82 people, including many children.
