On day three of the military operations against suspected Al Qaeda and Taliban fugitives in South Waziristan on the Afghan border, the Pakistani Army backed by Air Force fighter jets, gunship helicopters and artillery, are reported to have neutralised many terrorist hideouts. According to reports, fighting in the area has left 58 persons dead, including 15 security force personnel, during the last three days. According to The News, four jet-fighters bombed terrorist hideouts at Shakai in the early hours of June 11 and continued to hit other targets in the adjoining areas. Later, gunship helicopters reportedly flew over the area strafing positions of the terrorists. Further, at least 26 helicopters flew overhead with some of them airdropping army commandoes to secure the area. At least 10 choppers landed at Naway Kot and are reported to have destroyed the homes of two tribesmen, Dawar Khan and Eida Khan, who were accused of sheltering the fugitives. There were also reports that at least 40 houses used by the suspected terrorists, who reportedly include Uzbeks, Chechens, Afghans and some Arabs, were attacked from the air. Military regime spokesperson Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan said the military had responded with "appropriate measures" against miscreants who violated the April 24-Shakai agreement between the Government and tribesmen. Sultan also said the latest fighting on June 11 resulted in the deaths of 35 terrorists and 15 soldiers and added that operations were continuing as of early evening on June 11 and described the situation as being fluid.

Three Chinese engineers working on a sea-port project were killed and eleven persons, including nine Chinese nationals, sustained injuries in a car bomb attack near Gwadar, about 500 kilometers west of Karachi, near the border with Iran on May 3. The attack reportedly occurred early in the morning as a bus carrying at least 12 Chinese workers was proceeding to the Gwadar port. According to Sattar Lasi, the chief of police in Gwadar, "A car was parked near the port and it exploded as the bus reached the port.'' He also said it was not clear if it was a suicide attack or if the car was exploded by a remote control device. Police suspect that it could either be the work of Islamist terrorists or hard-line Baluchi nationalists, who are against the Gwadar project. The engineers were working on a sea-port project in Gwadar which is partly aided by China. This is the first major attack on foreign workers since a suicide bomber killed 11 French engineers outside the Sheraton Hotel in Karachi on May 8, 2002.

At least 31 people were killed and 75 others sustained injuries in a suspected suicide bombing at a Shia mosque at Sialkot in the Punjab province on October 1 during the Friday prayers. More than 1,000 Shias were reportedly present at the Zainabia mosque, a kilometer away from the city police station on Raja Road, when the bomb exploded. Eyewitnesses said that a man, whose identity is yet to be ascertained, entered the mosque with a briefcase while the Friday sermon was being delivered. The Sialkot Police have indicated that the man with the briefcase was the main suspect, who also died in the blast. The army was deployed later to maintain law and order after angry mobs reacted by setting ablaze a gas station and two police vehicles to protest the blast. Security forces are also reported to have neutralised another explosive weighing 6.5-kg outside the same mosque. Eight suspects had been detained after preliminary investigations. While no group has claimed responsibility for the blast thus far, officials in Islamabad said that it could be in retaliation for the last week’s operation in which Amjad Farooqi, a suspected Al Qaeda operative, was killed by security agencies. Farooqi, a key suspect in two assassination attempts on President Pervez Musharraf, was also affiliated to the outlawed Sunni outfit, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).

At least 38 people have reportedly been killed and more than 100 injured in two bomb blasts in the city of Multan on October 7, today. According to the BBC, the attack occurred at about 4.40AM (PST) when hundreds of people had gathered to mark the first anniversary of the killing of Sunni leader and Sipah-e-Sahaba (SSP) chief Maulana Azim Tariq outside Islamabad. "It seems to be an act of sectarian terrorism, but we are still investigating," Multan's deputy police chief Arshad Hameed told the Associated Press. While no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, police suspect the involvement of outlawed Shia groups. The Associated Press reported that the first blast came from a car bomb and another minutes later from a device on a motorcycle. The attack comes almost a week after a suicide attacker detonated a bomb inside a crowded Shia mosque in the eastern city of Sialkot, killing 31 people and injuring more than 50.
