A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Qasim Ghauri, and an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Police, Aslam, were killed while the Station House Officer (SHO) Haider Zaidi and two other constables were injured on August 15 during a six-hour-long operation to arrest a gang of extortionists in the Gulshan Town of Karachi District, the provincial capital of Sindh, reports The Express Tribune. The operation was carried out against gangster Zamin Shah Chandio, who was hiding in the settlements of Hussain Hazara Goth and Madho Goth near Safari Park in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area of the Town. In retaliation the Police killed Zamin Chandio, along with his three accomplices Ilahi Bux Chachar, Ardillo and Sunbul Ahmed. According to Police details, Chandio had refused to pay bribe to the Gulistan-e-Jauhar Police Station and allegedly assaulted its Police Constable, Waseem. When the injured constable returned, the Police team went to raid the gangster’s hideout. However, the gangsters opened fire at the Police team killing Police officers. In retaliatory firing the gangster along with his accomplices was shot dead. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Tahir Naveed, who was supervising the entire operation, criticised the Policemen occupying lower ranks in the Department. “Some black sheep of the Police Department were involved in giving permission to some criminals to run their illegal activities in the area,” he pointed out, adding that these Policemen had allowed gambling dens, land grabbing and extortions to take place under their patronage. “These same elements were involved in the Police encounter.” However, the leader of Jeay Sindh Tehreek (JST), an offshoot of Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz (JSQM), Habib Jatoi admitted that the deceased were their party activists and the Police shot them dead in a fake encounter. When the Police reached the area, the activists surrendered themselves, he claimed. “Basically, it was an extra-judicial killing.”

Thirty six persons were killed when Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) suicide bombers attacked an Army camp in Sarai Naurang area of Lakki Marwat District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on February 2, reports Dawn. 13 soldiers and 12 militants were killed. The Sarai Naurang town is a business hub of Lakki Marwat district, about 160kms south of Peshawar. Claiming responsibility for the attack, TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan said it was carried out to avenge the killing of two Taliban commanders — Toofani and Faisal — in a US drone attack in January. “We had sent only four fighters on the mission,” he told journalists by phone from an unknown location, intending to contradict the Government’s claim that 12 militants lost their lives during the gunfight.

Taliban leader Maulvi Nazir was among 10 Taliban militants killed in a US-operated drone strike in the South Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 3, reports Daily Times. The drone targeted the Taliban leader’s moving convoy. “Maulvi Nazir was on his way to Wana from Birmal when the convoy was hit in Sarkundi area (in Birmal tehsil), killing him and nine others,” officials sources said. Maulvi Nazir is the second top Taliban leader to be killed in a drone strike after Baitullah Mehsud, who was chief of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) when he was killed in 2009. Maulvi Nazir had ‘earned fame’ in spring 2007 when he led a successful uprising against foreign militants in Ahmedzai Wazir-held areas, ousting Uzbek militants along with their local supporters. He linked administration of polio vaccination to cessation of drone strikes and no polio drive could be launched in Ahmedzai Wazir areas since the ban in June 2012. Security agencies warned the Government of likely backlash from the supporters of Maulvi Nazir. “There may be backlash from a Taliban group and the federal government should direct all provincial capitals to increase vigilance against any threat,” security officials spoke on condition of anonymity. The Pentagon (US) welcomed reports that Maluvi Nazir was killed in a drone strike, saying his death would represent a “major development.” Pentagon spokesman George Little did not confirm the reports of the killing, but said, “If the reports are true, then this would be a significant blow, and would be very helpful not just to the United States but also to our Pakistani partners.” Dawn, however, reported that Nazir was killed along with his five guards when a missile hit his vehicle while he was going to Wana from Birmal on January 2. Maulvi Nazir’s key aide Rata Khan was among the other militants killed when the vehicle was attacked near Angoor Adda on the Afghan border, the official said. Nazir had survived a suicide bombing in November 29, 2012. The TTP, the umbrella organisation of Pakistani militant groups, denied its involvement, but Nazir, under pressure from the government, ordered the expulsion of Mehsud tribesmen from Wana. The TTP leadership comes from the Mehsud tribe. He had entered into a peace agreement with the government after his group expelled militants of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, led then by Tahir Uldashev, in 2007 from the area. Nazir’s fighters avoided attacking government and Security Forces’ installations in the tribal region and cooperated with the local administration, an official said. The military is believed to have struck a non-aggression pact with Nazir ahead of its 2009 operation against militants in South Waziristan. Nazir was understood to be close to the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani Network. Nazir had property in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. He earlier used to be a member of the Hizb-i-Islami, an Afghan militant group. Nazir’s group quickly appointed his close aide Bawal Khan as a replacement, according to one of his aides. But a Reuters report named the successor as Salahuddin Ayubi.

Twenty militants were killed and 12 others sustained injuries in air strikes carried out by Army warplanes in the Kukikhel area of Tirah Valley in Khyber Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 4, reports The News. The sources said that fighter jet bombed the sanctuaries of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Dwatoy and Bragat areas, killing 20 militants and causing injuries to 12 others. The official sources said that ‘commander’ Abdul Wali alias Umar Khalid, designated head of TTP for Tirah valley, was also present in Dwatoy at the time of the attack. Some reports suggested that he was among the dead. However, it couldn’t be verified from independent sources or the TTP due to lack of communication facilities in the Tirah Valley. The Kukikhel part of the Tirah valley fell to the TTP a few months back after the militant group defeated the Kukikhel Afridi tribal lashkar (tribal militia). The sources said that the ‘commander’ Tariq Afridi-led faction of TTP having bases in the valley had claimed responsibility for the assassination of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Senior Minister Bashir Bilour in Peshawar and also for the killing of 22 kidnapped members of the Levies force in Frontier Region Peshawar. Sources said that TTP cadres had celebrated the death of Bashir Bilour by resorting to festive firing for two hours in Dwatoy and surrounding areas. The fresh airstrikes conducted by the Security Forces (SFs) might be a reaction to the assassination of Bashir Bilour and the deaths of 22 Levies personnel.

The chief security officer of President Asif Ali Zardari since 2008, Bilal Sheikh, and two others, including his driver Irfan Sheikh and a fruit vendor Abdul Rehman, was killed while over a dozen others were wounded in a suicide attack near Guru Mandir in Jamshed Town of Karachi (Karachi District), the provincial capital of Sindh, on July 10, reported Daily Times. The incident took place when Bilal Sheikh along with his security guards was on his way home in Gulbhar from Bilawal House at Clifton in Saddar Town in a bullet-proof double-cabin vehicle. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Raja Umar Khattab said that initial investigation showed that it was a suicide blast. Khattab further said that the attacker had been chasing the convoy and struck when it stopped and Sheikh was getting out of the car to buy fruits. “It seems that the suicide attacker walked up to Bilal Shaikh’s vehicle and blew himself up outside the front passenger seat of the vehicle where Shaikh was seated,” said Khattab. The head of the suspect bomber was found from a house at the crime site. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. The Express Tribune adds that Bilal Shaikh had survived three attacks in the past. Lyari gangsters, including Shahid Bikkik and Ahsan Mohajir, were blamed for the last attack on May 28, 2011 at Firdous Colony in Liaquatabad Town.

The June 15, 2013 twin suicide attacks in Quetta (Quetta), the provincial capital of Balochistan targeting a bus of female students and a hospital that killed 25 people were carried out by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) to avenge the June 6, 2013 killing of five people [including two militants, their wives and a child] by the Security Forces (SFs) during a raid in the Khrotabad area of Quetta, on June 17, reports The News. However, well-informed sources in the security agencies insist that the militants had blown themselves up [along with their family members] when they were asked by the forces to surrender. The LeJ spokesman Abu Bakar told some Quetta-based journalists over phone that the first attack on the bus was carried out by a female bomber, Ayesha Siddiqa, while the second bombing was conducted by a male bomber who exploded himself inside Bolan Hospital where the victims of the first blast were being taken. According to the LeJ spokesman, the suicide hits were actually meant to avenge the June 6, 2013 operation by the SFs in the Killi Barat Khrotabad area of Quetta during which innocent women and a child were also killed.
