The Himalayan Times, quoting Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) sources, has reported that security forces’ killed at least 140 Maoist insurgents during an encounter at Bankhet in the far-western district of Kailali on January 5. A statement issued from the RNA Pristana headquarters said the troops attacked a Maoist base at Bankhet and engaged in a three-hour long battle with the insurgents. Further, it said that around 41 dead bodies of the Maoists have been recovered including that of ‘Bheri-Karnali Brigade commander’, Jit, from the incident site. Over 700 Maoists were reportedly involved in the attack and they have reportedly shot at the RNA helicopter used for the raid, without causing much damage. However, there are conflicting reports on the fatalities as some media reports indicated that between 40-50 insurgents have died. Fatalities, if any, on the RNA’s side have not been reported thus far.

According to Daily Excelsior, the two terrorists forced their entry into the Revenue Complex while throwing a grenade and firing upon the guards, at 1500 hours. Three police personnel were killed in the initial round of firing and equal number sustained injuries. Both terrorists were shot dead in the subsequent gun-battle. Around 250 people, including the Srinagar Deputy Commissioner and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir Range), were in the building at the time of the attack. This was the second Fidayeen attack of the year in Kashmir valley. A spokesperson of the Al Badr told local news agencies over telephone that cadres of his outfit had carried out the Fidayeen attack. The Kathmandu Post, quoting security sources, has reported that at least 48 Maoist insurgents are suspected to have been killed during clashes between security force (SF) personnel and the insurgents in the Ganeshpur area along the Nepalgunj-Guleriya section of the Mahendra Highway in Bardiya district on February 28. Two police personnel also died during the clash. The incident occurred after the insurgents opened fire at the SFs, which reached the site to remove barricades set up by the former on the highway.

According to the police, the terrorists were allegedly planning to target the Indian Military Academy in Dehra Dun. The encounter was a sequel to the arrest of Hamid and Sariq, residents of Seelampur in North-East Delhi at Mubarak Chowk on G.T. Karnal Road. The police recovered 10.5 kg of RDX from the jeep in which they were travelling. They also confessed that about half-a-dozen other militants were living in a house at Bharat Vihar in South-West Delhi. As the police laid siege to the house, a heavy exchange of fire followed for about an hour, and three terrorists were killed. The police suspect that at least two terrorists could have escaped and have launched a hunt for them.

Balochistan Government spokesperson, Raziq Bugti, said the exodus was sparked off after Nawab Akbar Bugti told officials and paramilitary forces to leave. District administrator, Abdul Samad Lasi, said 90 percent of the Dera Bugti population had left the town. Lasi added that at least 1,500-armed Bugti insurgents have taken up positions in the mountains outside the town and were waiting for an order to attack. As reported earlier, fierce gun battles between the tribal insurgents and troops in the area have killed at least 30 people and wounded more than 70.
