Two Army personnel were killed in an exchange of fire with Pakistani infiltrators along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) early on January 1, reports Daily Excelsior.The infiltrators were intercepted in the Khari Thrayat forest when they were trying to enter into India from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), officials said. Jammu-based Indian Army Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lieutenant Colonel Devender Anand said in a statement, “Two army soldiers martyred during cordon and search operation in Nowshera sector. The operation is still in progress and further details are awaited.”The search operation was launched following information about the movement of suspected terrorists, the officials added.

A local militant identified as Shahid, a resident of Bijbehara area of Anantnag District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), was killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in Awantipora area in Pulwama District on January 7 (today), reports Hindustan Times. The SFs launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Churswoo village of Awantipora in the early hours of on January 7 following information about the presence of the militant there, Police said.He was asked to surrender by the SFs but he chose to engage them in a gun battle, they said, adding that the militant was killed after a brief exchange of fire.

SFs launched a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Chadoora area following information about the presence of militants there, Police said. A gunfight broke out after the lone militant opened fire on the SFs who retaliated, resulting in the killing of the militant, who was identified as Adil Ahmed, a resident of Budgam. The Print adds that a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) militant, identified as Adil Gulzar, who was allegedly plotting the assassination of five Kashmiris — two SF officers, a journalist, a professor and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson - was killed in an encounter in Brahmpora village in Budgam District.

Security Forces (SFs) destroyed a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp in Pujariguda forest at Bonda Ghat area in Malkangiri District of Odisha on January 16, reports Odishabytes. As per the report, a joint team of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel conducted a search operation on January 13 on the basis of the intelligence input about Maoists having set up a camp inside the forest. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said, “During the search operation on January 16, the Maoists hiding inside the forest suddenly opened fire on us. An exchange of fire ensued and the Maoists fled the area. The security personnel later busted a camp inside the forest and seized several articles. A fresh search operation has begun in the forest to track down the rebels.”

A joint team of District Police and Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF’s) 60 battalion destroyed a camp of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and arrested a cadre in Sinko forests under Bandhgaon Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on January 18, reports The Times of India. As per the report, on receiving a tip off about the presence of the PLFI cadres in the said forest, the Security Forces (SFs) had launched an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. As soon as the SFs reached the forest, cadres of PLFI fired shots at them leading to an exchange of fire. "The exchange of fire lasted for about 20 minutes, resulting in the extremists fleeing from their camp. We have arrested a rebel and our interrogation is on to ascertain his identity and his involvement in extremist activities," said the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Pranav Anand adding that SFs recovered a 9mm pistol, a single barrel gun and a few cartridges, besides items of daily use from the PLFI camp.

An exchange of fire took place between cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and Security Forces (SFs) in the Sumerbandh area under Phiringia Police Station limits in Kandhamal District of Odisha on January 18, reports The Pioneer. On receiving inputs about the presence of Maoists of the KKBN (Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh) Division in the forest, Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel launched a combing operation. But spotting the SOG personnel, the Maoists opened fire, to which the police retaliated leading to a gun-battle. However, there were no reports of any casualties from both sides. Following the gunfight, the SFs destroyed a Maoist camp and have launched a combing operation in the area to trace the fleeing Maoists.

A woman cadre of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area between Tekalgudem and Basaguda villages in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on January 19, reports The Hindu. As per the report, the incident took place when a team of 168th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a unit of its 204th CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) battalion and State Police were conducting an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation in the said area. After the exchange of fire, body of a female Maoist along with three rifles have been recovered from the spot, said the Officials adding that a search of the area is ongoing and the identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

Acting on a tipoff, SFs including 50 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and Awantipora Police raided a militant hideout in Zantrag forest area in Khrew where militants were believed to be hiding. The firing took place around 5 am when a Police team stopped a Srinagar-bound truck for checking near the Toll Plaza in Ban area of Nagrota. Director General of Police (DGP), Dilbagh Singh said 3-4 terrorists were going to Srinagar when they were intercepted by the Police team at the toll plaza. Three militants were killed in the ensuing gunfight while one of them is believed to be in the trap, he said.The truck driver Mohamamd Mabool was arrested and has been taken into custody for questioning, adds The Indian Express. According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sundarraj P., separate teams of Security Forces (SFs) comprising the 151st and 204th battalions of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), had launched a counter-insurgency operation in the Maoist core areas of Sukma and Bijapur Districts on February 9. On the following day, personnel of the CoBRA, while advancing through the said forested area came under fire from the Maoists, triggering a gun-battle between the two sides, the IGP said, adding that two constables were killed in the gunfight, while six others sustained injuries. As per the report, acting on input about the movement of 20 to 30 armed Maoists in the said forest, a joint team of District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Odisha Police launched a combing operation. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed at the CTD Police station, 10 to 12 alleged militants entered Pakistan from Afghanistan to carry out attacks in Peshawar, Charsadda, Mohmand and Malakand areas. The CTD after getting intelligence report about the presence of the alleged militants launched an operation, officials said. The alleged militants instead of surrendering opened fire at the law enforcement personnel. CTD officials retaliated firing in which five alleged militants were killed, the FIR added. But as the police and para-military forces reached, the rebels started firing at the troops. After an initial exchange of fire from both the sides for about an hour, the naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] started backtracking and finally fled the scene." After the rebels fled the scene, the SFs carried out a search operation and found the bullet-ridden bodies of three women Maoists,beside those bodies were lying three rifles."During the search, we found over 500 rounds of bullets, arrow bombs, two IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), medicines, naxal literature from the scene, suggesting that the rebels belonging to Suresh Munda squad of the CPI-Maoist were at the Chirung village for motivating the villagers for joining the naxalism," SP, Mahatha pointed out.Intelligence sources maintained that the Naxalshave once again started influencing the local residents to come to the fold of the naxalism, said a senior intelligence officer. No casualty was reported in the incident. As per the report, acting on a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists, the Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel launched a combing operation in the said forest. A joint team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the State Police, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bachandeo Kujur, carried out search operations for two days in the area. An official source said that the joint operation was conducted on information about the presence of militants involved in extortion and terrorism-related acts in Gandi area. He said that Policemen came under attack when they came across the militants in the rural area near Naurang Town. The slain Maoists were identified as Rishu Istam, Deputy Commander of Platoon 16 of People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA), armed wing of CPI-Maoist and Maata, the ‘commander’ of Pidiyakot ‘Jan Militia’ (people’s army). While Istam carried a cash reward of INR 800,000; Maata had a reward of INR 100,000 on his head. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Pallava, on receiving a specific input that 20 Maoists, led by Mallesh, commander of platoon 16 and Istam, was on the move, and area committee members - Ajay and Murli were with them in the said area, a team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on a counter-insurgency operation. Three militants were shot dead in an encounter with Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) personnel in Elum Ghar area under Pir Baba Police Station in Buner District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on May 31, reports Dawn. According to the CTD, the militants were coming from Elum Ghar just before Zuhar (Noon) prayers when the CTD personnel present there started chasing them. After sensing that they were being followed by CTD officials, the militants opened fire on them. The CTD personnel returned fire and as a result all the three militants were killed. The deceased were identified as Mohammad Wahab, son of Shakirullah of Bann village; Inamullah, son of Taj Mohammad of Malook Abad village; and Ihsanullah, son of Habibullah of Qambar village of Swat District. Official sources said, movement of the militants was first spotted on the intervening night of May 28 and 29 as one out of six militants trying to infiltrate from Kabootar Gala village in Kalal area in Nowshera sector stepped over an Anti-Personnel Mine (APM) leading to an explosion in the area. Since then the troops engaged the militants along LoC resulting into an exchange of fire. However, as the firing from the militants’ side stopped, the security personnel conducted searches and recovered three bodies of militants lying on the LoC. Large quantity of arms, ammunition, explosives and eatables were also lying near bodies of the militants. Recoveries included two AK rifles with 13 filled magazines, a US-made M-16A2 rifle with six filled magazines, a 9-MM Chinese pistol, one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) with six grenades, five hand grenades and two knives.

Giving details, Police said that based on a specific intelligence a joint team of Police, army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) cordoned off Pamposh colony in Saimoh of Tral under Awantipora Police in Pulwama, and as the cordon was being laid, there was an initial exchange of fire at the crack of dawn between the holed-up militants and the SFs and one of them was eliminated. Later on, after a brief exchange of fire, the second militant was also killed by the SFs taking the toll of killed militants to two. Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition including two AK rifles, two pistols, 5 AK magazines and two hand grenades were recovered from them, Police said. The identity of the slain militants were being ascertained, however, reports suggest the slain militants were affiliated to the local Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

The first recovery was made after teams comprising District Police, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and a Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stumbled upon a codex wire planted along the Kuida-Hatiburu road during a patrol. Upon digging out the area, 40 live IEDs, including can bombs and cooker bombs, planted in a series circuit, were recovered. The second recovery of 20 IEDs were made from Merelgora area in the District. While the SFs were busy removing the bombs, Maoists opened fire, resulting in retaliatory fire from the SFs, following which the rebels retreated. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said the search operation in the area was launched earlier in the day on a tip-off about the movement by Maoists in the forest cover of Goilkera and Sonua Police station areas.

After failing to enter the compound, the militants launched a gun and grenade attack and attempted to storm the building while opening indiscriminate fire. They were engaged by Security personnel posted and failed to make headway amidst heavy exchange of fire. Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed the responsibility for the attack. A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) ‘commander’, identified as David alias Umesh, was injured and arrested after an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area along Katenga-Pendridih road in Rajnandgaon District of Chhattisgarh on July 1, reports Hindustan Times. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Shukla said, “a Police team was out of an anti-Maoist operation in the said location and sensing presence of security personnel the Maoists opened fire. The encounter lasted for about 30 minutes after which the Maoists fled from the spot. A search operation was initiated after the encounter and we arrested David who was injured and tried to run away but was caught after a short chase in Khobha village.” David – a native of Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra, was one of most wanted Maoists of newly formed MMC (Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh) of CPI-Maoist. An AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 54 live cartridges, one pistol, one walkie-talkie set, medical items and other items of daily use and Rs 772 cash was also recovered from his procession. The SP further said that David was carrying a cash reward of INR 29,00,000 on his head in three States including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

One Policeman and an SSB Inspector were injured in the gun-battle. The slain Maoists were identified as – Vipul from Muzaffarpur, Kiran, Nakul and Chhotey Sahni alias Suraj, a resident of Valmikinagar. Vipul had been arrested in 2018 for the murder of Champapur-Gonauli Panchayat mukhiya (head of the Panchayat, village level local self-Government institution) Manoj Singh in the VTR region. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Lallan Mohan Prasad said by the Special Task Force of Bagaha police and the SSB on receiving the inputs about the presence of the Maoists in the forests, the joint operation was launched. “The Maoists were caught unawares and resorted to indiscriminate firing. The security personnel retaliated and four rebels were killed in the encounter,” said a Police official. In one incident, Maoists exchanged fire with a team of Police in the forest near Thokkuguda village of Thiryani Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Komaram Bheem Asifabad District on July 14. No casualties were reported on any side and the Maoists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishnu S. Warrier said, “around 10.30 p.m. on July 14, when Police parties were searching in Thokkuguda village, a Maoist Dalam (armed squad) carrying AK 47 and SLR weapons attempted to fire at us and we retaliated. As a result, the Dalam fled from the scene in the dark.” Following this incident, Police arrested a Maoist sympathiser – Kova Ananth Rao of Thokkuguda in Thiryani Mandal for sheltering the Maoist Dalam. According to the SP, Kova Ananth Rao gave food and shelter to the Dalam led by State Committee member Mailarepu Adellu alias Bhaskar. In the second incident, Maoists exchanged fire with Police in Bhadradri Kothagudem District on July 15. A Policeman suffered a bullet injury, in the incident.
