On January 1, seven Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and a civilian were killed in a pre-dawn terrorist attack on the para-military CRPF Group Centre at Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, reports The Hindu. Three more CRPF personnel, a civil police personnel and a home guard were injured in the attack. The Uttar Pradesh Principal Secretary J.N. Chamber said that the attack was carried out around 2.45 am (IST) by two suspected fidayeen (suicide squad) dressed as CRPF constables. They breached the outer security (which is the responsibility of the police), and started firing indiscriminately from AK-47 rifles on the security post, the guard room and the control room. The terrorists subsequently escaped under cover of darkness although unconfirmed reports said one of them was hit in the leg when the CRPF personnel opened fire in retaliation. Although no outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack, police and security agencies suspect that the attack was carried out by the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

Sahara Samay reports that a police constable, identified as Sunil Kumar, was killed and three others wounded when armed cadres of the Communist party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) attacked a police outpost at Bansjore in the Simdega district on January 1-night. "Nearly 500 Maoist rebels surrounded the outpost and hurled petrol bombs before firing indiscriminately around midnight last night. Policemen retaliated and the gunfight lasted till three in the morning," said Sergeant Major J.K. Jha. Police have claimed some fatality on the Maoists side on the basis of bloodstains found at the encounter site. A civilian was also injured in the attack. Before launching the attack, the Maoists reportedly cut a tree at Keriaghati and also planted landmines to block police reinforcements from reaching the outpost.

Security forces claimed to have killed about 90 militants in two different encounters in the Ladha area of South Waziristan on January 18, according to The Post. According to Dawn, in the first incident, militants attacked a convoy on the Jandola-Wana road in Chagmalai at 12.30pm. Troops returned fire and between 20 and 30 assailants were killed. Four security force personnel were injured and two vehicles were damaged. Further, security forces attacked a large number of militants who had gathered to attack the Laddah fort and killed up to 60 of them, the military said. Military spokesman Major General Athar Abbass said "Our soldiers have bravely guarded the Ladha Fort. They were attacked from mountain tops but they retaliated with heavy weaponry including artillery, killing about 90 insurgents," he stated. He added that the SFs suffered no casualties. However, Taliban sources have dismissed the government claim and described the reports about the casualties on the part of Taliban as part of the propaganda to boost-up what they called as the shattered morale of the security forces.

Darra Adamkhel administrator Kamran Zeb told Dawn that the top priority of the army was to secure the Friendship Tunnel and the troops would move towards the tunnel once it was cleared. The militants were going to the tunnel in small groups and firing on troops, he said. A jirga (council) and tribal elders continued their efforts to persuade the militants to hand over the ammunition trucks they had seized and vacate the area immediately. “Six attempts have been made through the jirga to broker a peace deal with the militants but they seem to be sticking to their stance. Now the only way is to teach them a lesson and the militants will be wiped out from the area in two to three days. The operation will continue till the entire Darra Adamkhel area is cleared of militants,” Zeb stated.

According to The News, kidnappers freed more than 250 students and teachers unharmed after being given safe passage by the authorities on January 28 from a school in the Bannu district of NWFP where they were holding the hostages. Though the government insisted that the kidnappers were a gang of criminals, reports indicated that some of them were suspected militants. One of the kidnappers, Gul Jamil, who was killed in the shoot-out with police, was stated to be a militant belonging to the Karak district. Groups of militants have reportedly been active in recent months in both the Karak and Bannu districts. They have been blamed for some of the kidnappings in the two districts. About eight militants, who had abducted a senior health official, Dr Hussain Jan, and his driver in Karak, took the children and teachers hostage in the high school of Walizar Kallay in the Domel area of Bannu, Dawn reported. One of the kidnappers was killed during an exchange of fire with police. The militants released the kidnapped men and entered the school. They held the students and teachers at gunpoint to avert a police action. Sources said that local elders, including former legislators Qari Gul Azeem and Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz, held negotiations with the militants for the release of the students and teachers. The six-hour standoff ended when the elders persuaded police officers to avoid an armed action and provide safe passage to the gunmen. "They (hostage-takers) were armed with dynamite, hand-grenades, Kalashnikov rifles and other explosive material," Aziz told AFP. He added that "During negotiations they repeatedly warned they would kill the children and blow up themselves if they were not allowed safe passage."

Security forces on February 11 captured Taliban commander Mullah Mansoor Dadullah along with five other Taliban militants after a gun-battle in the Gowal Ismailzai village of Qila Saifullah district (near the Afghan border) in Balochistan, according to Dawn. He is the younger brother of Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah, who was killed in a clash with the US-led forces in Afghanistan’s Helmand province in May 2007. "Mansoor Dadullah is alive, but he is injured and in the custody of the authorities along with five other Taliban who too have received injuries," caretaker Interior Minister Lt-Gen (retd) Hamid Nawaz said. A senior military official told AP that Dadullah died of his wounds on the way to hospital, but army spokesman Major General Athar Abbas denied the claim, Daily Times reported. Lieutenant Colonel David Accetta, the top US military spokesman in Afghanistan, said he could not confirm the report. Mullah Mansoor succeeded his brother as commander, but was removed from the post, and subsequently from the Taliban movement itself, after some time following differences with Mullah Omar. He was later arrested by the Afghan government, but released in a swap when Taliban abducted 30 people, including an Italian journalist.
