However, the fate of other illegal foreigners being kept in judicial custody is still uncertain. According to a reliable source, a total of 48 illegal foreigners are being kept at Imphal Central Jail. The source further said that most of the foreigners being kept in judicial custody are Bangladesh nationals.

Police arrested six militant suspects on May 11, including two women suspected to be involved in May 9 explosion in Imphal West District which killed two and wounded three, reports Imphal Free Press. The Director General of Police (DGP) Manipur, L.M Khaute, said that the militant were arrested from different places in Imphal East and West District as well as Thoubal Districts. Of the six arrestees, five members including two women are cadres of People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and one arrestee a cadre of Progressive faction of PREPAK (PREPAK-pro). The main suspect of the attack identified as Thoudam Suresh alias Khamba alias Inunganba was arrested from Leishangthem Thoudam Mamang Leikai in Thoubal District. The other arrestees have been identified as Thokchom Ranjit Singh and his wife, Thokchom Tharongoubi Leimai, Irom Kumudini Devi, Thoudam Aboy alias Wathouba alias Ekheng Meitei.

Special Cell of West Jaintia Hills Police on May 13 busted an extortion network of a National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), reports Northeast Today. The ‘deputy secretary of revenue’ of NSCN-K identified as Gaising Maringmei was arrested from Mookyniang, Khiehtyrshi in West Jaintia Hills District. His arrest led to arrest of two NSCN-K militants identified as Khamjang Rongmei and Thuanguangpou Kamei. INR 2,00,000 was recovered from the arrestees.nterrogation revealed that an engineer of a private firm Bharatiya Company Limited which is undertaking construction work in Manipur was abducted and the company had paid INR 2.5 million for his release on May 10. A militant also stated that INR 1.3 million was being transported by wife of ‘deputy secretary of revenue’. The information was shared with Imphal West District Police and they arrested her at Koirengei in Imphal East District and recovered the money she was transferring.Later on the same day, another NSCN-K cadre was arrested from Police Bazaar in Shillong in East Khasi Hills District, reports Northeast Today. West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem stated that ‘NSCN-K ‘finance wing’ appears to be using Jaintia hills as safe haven to elude the scanner of the security forces and carry on its extortion activity and finance network which includes procuring of arms and ammunition’.

Police stated that truck was torched by three unidentified cadres of a hill based militant groups while the truck was heading towards a tunnel construction site near Noney District Headquarters. Altogether 1500 personnel of Assam Rifles, Manipur Rifles, Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBN), State police and Railway Protection Force (RPF) have been guarding the project. State Police Department has decided to upgrade its security measured by constituting a dedicated special commando unit to tackle law and order situation, including counter-insurgency, reports Northeast Today on May 20. Director-general of Police L.M. Khaute stated that ‘The manpower for the special commando unit is being culled from the 265 state police personnel’. Khaute said of the 265 Policemen, 20 officers, including five each from Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur Districts, will be picked up to supervise the personnel. The officers will work under the command of inspector James Thangal, who will be the unit’s officer-in-charge. Thangal will work under the command of Imphal West Additional Superintendent of Police (operations) N. Madhunimai Singh. The unit’s overall control will be under the purview of the deputy inspector-general of police-range 1.
