Two hardcore United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) terrorists, ‘second lieutenant’ of the outfit’s ‘109 Battalion’, Rubul Ali and ‘lieutenant’ of the same battalion, Subhash Sharma were killed in an encounter with the army personnel at Kumarbari under Palashbari police station in Kamrup district on December 5. Two 9 mm pistol and three grenades were recovered from the slain duo. The exchange of fire also killed a one-year-old boy besides injuring his mother.

Defence minister Pranab Mukherjee while responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament) on December 8 refuted the claim by Paresh Baruah, the ‘commander-in-chief’ of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) that at least 150 ULFA cadres have been working in various security force establishments in the country. Three persons were killed and at least 65 others were injured as United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) terrorists carried out a series of bomb explosions in different parts of Assam on December 14. In the first incident, two persons were killed and 26 others wounded when a timer explosive device exploded at Maya Bazaar in the heart of Morigaon town. Another timer device exploded opposite the Haiborgaon police station in Nagaon town killing one person and injuring 17 others. Separately, a Central Reserve Police Force personnel and a civilian were injured when unidentified ULFA terrorists lobbed a grenade near a cinema hall in Guwahati city. Further, two army personnel were wounded in a bomb blast near the Guwahati railway station. Another bomb blast occurred at a rural telephone exchange at Kakojan in the Tinsukia district. Besides, the terrorists also attacked the private residence of the State’s Labour Minister, Rameswar Dhanowar, at Digboi in the Tinsukia district. Two more grenade attacks targeting the Chabua police station and an office of the Congress party were also reported from the Tinsukia district.
