Kerala State Police on July 1 submitted before Kerala High Court that the Popular Front of India (PFI) cadres, who participated in the Narath (Kannur District) weapons training camp, had close links with Indian Mujahidheen (IM) and Dawood Ibrahim, reports Deccan Chronicle. Police found that one of the accused had contacted Sanaulla Shabandri belonging to the Bhatkal family, founder of IM. The bank accounts of the accused establish the link. Sanaulla is a close associate of Dawood. An examination of the bank account of one of those arrested in the case found that he had received an amount of INR seven million from a foreign bank account, the Police submitted. All the accused were having terror links, including with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operator Thadiyantavida Nazeer.

Traces of RDX and ammonium nitrate have been found at the explosion sites in and around the Mahabodhi temple complex in Bodh Gaya in Gaya District on July 7, reports The Times of India reported on July 8. Some instructions in Urdu were found along with the bombs recovered and defused in Bodh Gaya. One such instruction read Bara But (big statue) and the other 'bus'. Police believe that the first meant Great Buddha statue and the second the tourist bus. Another writing, again in Urdu, said that the operation was done as revenge for what had happened in Iraq. Further, examination of three unexploded bombs revealed that the planters used small LPG cylinders as containers to detonate explosives suspected to be a mix of ammonium nitrate and another high intensity material. "Small cylinders ranging from 2.5 to 5 kg have been used. The gas was taken out and the cylinders filled with explosives. The circuit was then completed using a detonator and a timer device," said an officer from the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Sources said this is the first time gas cylinders have been used as containers for explosives -- a departure from the signature style of Indian Mujahideen (IM), the outfit being suspected to have carried out the blasts. IM is known to use tiffin boxes, pressure cookers or boat-shaped aluminum containers to pack explosives with large amounts of shrapnel. This method of bomb making gives specific direction to the impact of the blasts and causes maximum casualties.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and other security agencies are probing the authenticity of the Twitter account purportedly belonging to terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) in which it has claimed responsibility for Bodh Gaya serial blasts and also warned that the next target would be Mumbai (Maharashtra), Hindustan Times reports on July 10. According to sources, the account originated in Canada. “We will definitely look into who is behind this Twitter account,” said a senior NIA official.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has issued 12 sketches and photographs of persons suspected to have been involved in the July 7 Bodh Gaya serial bomb blasts, The Times of India reports on July 11. Two of them belong to Gaya and Samastipur Districts of Bihar. NIA website features the photographs of Amir Reza Khan alias Parvez alias Rizwan alias Muttaki of Gaya District and Mohammed Tehseen Akhtar alias Monu of Samastipur District as most wanted. Moreover, investigations into the blasts are now focused on the three live bombs that remained unexploded and were recovered by agencies. "This is the only lead we have as of now as nothing has come off interrogations of several people who were seen in CCTV footage or had stayed in hotels nearby," an NIA officer said. Further, NIA has announced a reward of INR one million for definite clues about the perpetrators of blasts. In another related move, the NIA on July 10 lodged a complaint case at the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Patna and the three FIRs lodged at Bodh Gaya in this connection have been transferred to NIA. Meanwhile, two tweets purportedly from Indian Mujahideen (IM) that claimed the terror outfit carried out the serial blasts at Bodh Gaya and warned about a plot to attack Mumbai (Maharashtra) by July 13, 2013 have been traced to Pakistan. The Twitter handle @IndianMujahidin sent out the warning to Mumbai on July 6. It followed that up by claiming responsibility for the explosions at the Buddhist site in Bihar in a tweet on July 7, almost 12 hours after the explosive devices placed inside the temple complex had gone off. "Our probe has established that the tweets originated in Pakistan. We cannot pinpoint the exact city or location at this point of time since we have not got a detailed report from the microblogging firm," a senior source in Maharashtra ATS said.

Security agencies, probing into the suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) tweet, have reportedly zeroed in on a cyber cafe in Karachi (provincial capital of Sindh) in Pakistan from where the message claiming responsibility for the Bodh Gaya (Bihar) serial blasts (July 7, 2013) had been uploaded, The Times of India reports on July 13. Moreover, National Investigation Agency (NIA) on July 12 raided the office of Cobra security agency in Kankarbagh (Patna District) and the residences of 11 of its security guards to check the veracity of their statements in connection with the serial blasts. The agency had provided guards for security inside the shrine. Further, NIA has sent 18 samples to Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh) for DNA test in connection with the serial bomb explosions. "Five days after the serial bomb explosions, no concrete leads (have come up) so far and NIA has sent 18 samples collected as evidence for DNA touch test to Hyderabad," said a police official in Gaya.

Two absconding operatives of the Indian Mujahideen (IM), who represent two of the home-grown terror outfit's deadliest known modules, were 'certainly' behind the Bodh Gaya blasts, claimed Delhi Police special cell, on July 15, reports Hindustan Times. Waqas alias Ahmed from the Maharashtra module and Asadullah Akhtar Haddi alias Tabrez from the Uttar Pradesh module have been evading arrest well before they allegedly planted bombs during the Mumbai serial blasts in July 2010. The men then executed a similar, though unsuccessful bid at Pune in August 2012 and another bid in Delhi last year before they allegedly struck in Bodh Gaya instead, according to highly-placed sources. "These men, who have received training at Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) camps in Pakistan, according to Syed Maqbool, one of the men arrested for the Pune serial blasts, are the only remaining IM bombers," said a senior officer. While Haddi, who was allegedly involved in the Batla House encounter of 2008 has been on the run, Waqas was part of the infamous Aurangabad Arms Haul of 2006. “We have reached this conclusion after analysing undetonated Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) recovered from Mumbai, Pune and Bodh Gaya. All had similar markings near their circuits”, senior officer added.

The arrest of a man, Anwar Mullick in Kolkata (West Bengal) on July 7, 2013, the day of the Bodh Gaya (Bihar) blasts, has reportedly revealed an explosives supply unit of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) responsible for supply of explosives for IM-linked blasts since 2010, including the German Bakery blast in Pune, Chinnaswamy Stadium Blast in Bangalore and the 2011 Mumbai serial blasts, Indian Express reports on July 17. Anwar supplied explosives to IM operative Yasin Bhatkal since 2010, said sources familiar with Mullick's interrogation over the past week. Mullick, who has been linked to terrorism-related activities since 1993, sourced explosives via Bangladesh, added the sources.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has almost settled on the Indian Mujahideen (IM) as the terror outfit responsible for the serial explosions at Bodh Gaya (Bihar, July 7, 2013), The Times of India reports on July 17. "Going by the modus operandi, nature of explosives and eyewitness statements, the involvement of Naxalites, Hindu terror outfits or even disgruntled elements within the temple management can be safely ruled out. It is now almost certain that the IM or a local outfit owing allegiance to it carried out the multiple blasts," said an officer associated with the probe. In addition, NIA has found some important clues in the blasts, Union Minister of Home Affairs Sushilkumar Shinde said on July 17. "I can say that investigation is being done seriously, and probing agency (NIA) has found some important clues in the right and positive direction," Shinde commented. Meanwhile, reports indicate that poor quality of gas cylinders used in the bombs planted at Bodh Gaya, perhaps, saved the site from too much damage. Investigations by NIA revealed that one of the reasons why the 10 bombs that exploded in Bodh Gaya could not cause much damage was because the cylinders in which explosives were stuffed were procured from local factories in Bihar and were of very poor quality. "In some bombs the entire base of the cylinder has come out intact dampening the impact of the blasts," said an NIA officer. Another reason being cited for the bombs going off with a whimper is poor insertion of detonators in the shrapnel-explosive mix. "Holes were drilled into the cylinders and then explosives and shrapnel put into it. A detonator was then inserted to complete the circuit with batteries and clocks. It seems the detonators were surrounded more by shrapnel than explosives leading to reduced charge and poor explosion," said the officer.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing conspiracy of Indian Mujahideen (IM), in its first chargesheet filed on July 17, traces the origins of the banned outfit and details its agenda but fails to find any exhaustive evidence, according to Indian Express. The 42-page chargesheet was filed in a case against 12 IM operatives, including Yasin Bhatkal, Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal registered in September 2012. In what reads like a compilation of previous chargesheets filed by various state police and the special cell of Delhi Police, it states that "IM was formed in or around 2003 end in the wake of communal mobilisation due to factors like Babri Masjid demolition and Gujarat riots". According to the NIA, IM was formed after a group of certain ultra radicalised Muslim youths segregated themselves from Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI). Without substantiating, NIA claims, "Source information revealed that IM is receiving regular funding from abroad..." It goes on to say that IM is undertaking "large-scale recruitment" for acts of terror with "active support from their Pakistan-based associates and sleeper cells within the country". NIA further says, "IM does not believe in the Constitution and believes in waging war against India." However, the NIA has no idea on the means of communication used by the outfit to contact its cadre. The chargesheet says the group recruits cadre by "engaging them in discussions".

Mohammad Danish Ansari alias Abdul Wahab, Mohammad Aftab Alam alias Farooq, Imran Khan, Syed Maqbool alias Zuber and Obaidur Rehman have been charged under various provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 121 A and 123. “The five accused have been charged for being active members of the Indian Mujahideen, a proscribed terrorist organisation, under the UAPA and for hatching a conspiracy to carry out terrorist acts in the country,” the NIA said.

The widening web of Indian Mujahideen (IM), has reached Jharkhand and it has developed strong links with some Naxalite cadres and Jharkhand, which is believed to be a Maoist stronghold, is emerging as its new hub, suggest fresh intelligence inputs, India Today reports on July 19. According to sources, Jharkhand has become the new recruitment centre for IM. "Not just Jharkhand but even other states hit by Left-wing extremism such as West Bengal, Bihar and parts of Andhra Pradesh are providing recruits to the outfit," said an intelligence officer. "The IM-Naxal nexus is under scrutiny. Some of the IM members who are being recruited from Maoist strongholds could have links with them," said an intelligence officer. "Terror groups often share information and are in touch with each other," the officer added.

National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials said that it was becoming like Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, the nursery of terror-activities in the country and Indian Mujahideen (IM). Kerala is turning out to be financial source for terror activities, as the kith and kin of a large number of people work in West Asian countries. Kerala is also a place where a high number of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) printed and circulated with the assistance of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
